Great reaction. I was in that crowd on the hot Saturday's summer day in July 1985. I was 16 years old. For 20 minutes on that day the UK was ruled by a different Queen. I have been a fan ever since and am now 55 years old !!!! I saw them live twice the following year in 1986 for their Magic tour. RIP Freddie, you were and still are a LEGEND, you beautiful Persian Poppinjay 💛

I couldn't go... I was a father to two daughters and one on the way at the time. Big Queen fan, bought all their albums up till 'day at the races'. The world is a much worse place without Freddie Mercury... that's a fact!

The shortest 20 minutes in history. Freddie Mercury's crowd control and stage presence is incomparable.

FYI, Radio Gaga was what Lady Gaga took her name from. Now you need to watch the 1981 Montreal concert... pick any song from it and you will see why Queen is so fabulous!

I watched the whole Live Aid concert, live on TV when I was 7yo. Freddie was once asked "What's your favourite instrument to play"? He replied, "The audience darling".

Live Aid was a multi venue concert to raise money for the famine relief in Ethiopia. This concert was held at Wembley stadium in London in front of 75,000 people and another concert was being held at the same time at JFK stadium in Philadelphia in front of 90,000 people. There were large screens set up at both stadiums so the fans could watch the performances at the other stadium. There were 75 musical acts between both stadiums. There were 13 satellites used to broadcast this all over the world with a global reach of 1.9 billion people. Freddie was sick with a bad throat infection and was told by his doctors not to perform. During his call and response and the clapping during Radio Ga Ga not only were the fans in Wembley responding so was the crowd in Philadelphia. The long note in his call and response is now referred to as The Note Heard round the World. Every band had 20 minutes to perform and Queen was one of the few bands that practiced to play as many songs in that timeframe as possible. They were told if they ran over the sound would cut off. If you watch when Freddie is waiting to end the set you see a monitor on the stage to the right with red and yellow lights. That is a signal for the bands to wrap up. If it goes to just the red light the sound would be cut. Just as Freddie ends the light goes red. The sound on the stage was horrible as they couldn’t hear themselves or each other. Queen was able to navigate this issue through visual signals and memory because they practiced. Even with this issue Roger the drummer kept them to within 10 seconds, a feat hard to accomplish doing one song much less six in those conditions. They were true professionals. This is hailed as the best live performance ever by many, many people and they aren’t wrong.

I hope you listen to more Queen live... especially the live in Montreal ... appreciate your reaction... (p.s. Queen were a last-minute addition to this program.. tickets were already sold when they were added to the program... )... also, this was not just "Freddie & some guys"... this entire band were incredibly talented and all four of them are in the "songwriters hall of fame"..

I love this set from this concert. Freddie, Brian and Roger all had solo careers outside of Queen but Queen never broke up and Queen always came first before solo work. Tickets for this show were probably around $20.00 and the concert went all day long. Brian is an incredible guitar player, if you want to hear him make that guitar cut right through you, you need to listen to Queen: White Queen live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975. I get shivers every time from that song...Freddie's vocals and piano work on that one will blow your hair back, too. Thank you for your reaction.

Most all of Queen songs are usually better when performed live ….versus the studio releases. They have a huge catalog of almost 300 recorded songs ….including their solo albums….and many you will continue to recognize. Freddie Mercury is still considered by many….to be one of the best male singers of all time. Please …. Please react to “Somebody to Love “ live at Montreal 1986. I know I just shared a lot of info on this performance but I would also like to share some info on Queen and each member individually. They are as fascinating as their music and I hope this will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation of what you are listening to.
    BAND:
Queen was formed in 1970 by Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor. After going through a few bass players John Deacon joined them in 1971. They were together until Freddie’s death in 91. Brian and Roger played in the 2000s with Paul Rodgers as lead vocalist and then with Adam Lambert. Freddie, Brian and Roger had solo careers as well. Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were all inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and are the first and I believe only to be inducted as a band. They are the only band where every member has written at least one number 1 hit.
From their beginning they did things differently than other bands. They practiced for months and would only perform in front of family and friends instead of playing pubs and bars so that they could get their performance the way they wanted it. They were professional even from the start. They were very involved with all aspects of the business including their lighting, stage look and what they wore. They had the first moving lighting rig (looked like a crown) and other innovative lighting techniques that bands would copy. After they split from their management company they managed themselves and John Deacon oversaw their financials and they would not do anything unless John gave the ok. They were co-producers on almost all their albums.
They were the first rock band to perform at stadiums in South America and behind the Iron Curtain.
    Freddie Mercury:
Lead vocalist, songwriter, composer, record producer and plays piano. He can also play guitar and keyboards. Depending on what you read he had a 3 to 4 octave vocal range and according to a scientific study had a voice unlike any other in rock and roll history in part due to his extremely fast vibrato. He had perfect pitch. He graduated with a diploma in graphic design and designed the band’s logo. He also studied fashion design. He is arguably the best frontman ever in rock. Freddie passed away in 1991.
    Dr. Sir Brian May:
Lead guitarist, backing/lead vocals, songwriter, record producer. He can also play bass, keyboards, piano, harp, synthesizer and banjolele. He was knighted in 2023. Brian has a PhD in Astrophysics and collaborated with NASA on their New Horizons Pluto mission and he has an asteroid named in his honor. He has an IQ of 181. Brian was Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University and is also a leading authority on stereoscopic (3D) photography. When Brian was 16 he and his father made his electric guitar out of items they had around the house. They even made some of the tools they used to make the guitar. The neck of the guitar is hand carved from an 18th century fireplace mantle, the body from an oak table, Mother of pearl buttons were used for the fret markers and the tremolo bar made from bike parts and his mother’s knitting needle. It is called the Red Special and 60 years later it is still Brian’s main guitar. His guitar has a sound like no other. He uses a sixpence as a plectrum and prefers those made before 1957 as they were made a bit differently after that.
    Roger Taylor:
Drummer, backing/lead vocals, songwriter, record producer. He also plays guitar, bass, piano, keyboards and synthesizer. He has a falsetto vocal range which earned him the nickname, the Dog Whistle by his bandmates. I’ve seen some articles that state he has a 5 octave vocal range. He went to school to become a Dentist and got bored with it and got a degree in Biology obtaining a BSc. He has a unique sound playing drums and was chosen as the 8th greatest drummer in classic rock in a listener poll conducted by Planet Rock.
    John Deacon:
Bassist, songwriter, record producer and would oversee the band’s financials. He also played double bass, rhythm guitar, piano, keyboards, drums and synthesizer. He earned a First Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering (while playing in Queen). He made an amp called the Deacy Amp from a speaker cabinet and parts he found in the trash. He used it for a while and then gave it to Brian to use which enabled Brian’s guitar to sound like different orchestral instruments. Brian hired experts to duplicate it but no one was ever able to make one to sound like Deacon’s amp.

Bit more information to add to what's already been said. The crowd singing along to all the songs will seem even more amazing once you know that when tickets went on sale Queen hadn't been on the playlist, as Bob Geldof hadn't yet been able to persuade them to appear, so it wasn't especially a Queen fanbase! Each ticket cost just £25 for the whole day, press people had to pay £100 per person. I also feel as if I'm actually there when listening and watching. This part of Live Aid took part in London, Wembley Stadium. I was unable to obtain a ticket at the time - thank goodness for TH-cam!

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 68 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. So, here it goes: FUN FACTS FIRST: The kisses are for his Mom who was watching him on Television.
MATTER OF FACTS: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fan growing up. So,was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.
NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:
Anyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves!
LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May, is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! They made out of an old cabinet his mother was going to throw away. They included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)!
INTERESTING INFO: When he is waving his arm it is to tell the cameramen which way he is going bc he’s moving around so much. When he kicks his legs backwards that is getting over all the cables, that are on the Stage. TV Cameras were not cordless back in the day!! And, “We Will Rock You”, is actually a Prelude to “We Are The Champions”. (It is really all 1 Song!)
You just, truly, saw “The Greatest Show On Earth!”
Brian May said Freddy was a hard taskmaster in rehearsals. But, that he always was right about what the Audience wanted…would say that worked out pretty well..wouldn’t you agree? Freddy turned the whole Audience in to his backup singers! (By the way when he bends over & shows his backside it’s to the first Manager they had. He ripped them off. He never dreamed they would get as big as they were going to be. He explained @ a Show, why he was doing it. It was such a hit he decided to keep doing it. Basically, he was reminding the guy how he screwed up!)

    • @anne-mariesindruprix4792

"We will rock you" and "We are the Champions" are not really one song. - Brian wrote We will rock you and Freddie wrote We are the champions. - But they were always played together at the end of the concerts - - and other venues- often sport or celebrations. - and has been for more than 40 years! This concert were seen/heard by 1.9 billion - via 23 satellites all over the world - and at this concert in Wembley with 72.000 in the audience and Philadelphia, US . with 90.000 in the audience. Queen stole the show. Their latest large concert - world wide - was opening The late Queen Elizabeth II jubilee - also via satellites worldwide. You should find it - it is also funny. Queen now has Spike Edney as music director playing keyboards - - and a bass player, and a drummer - all singing. Brian and Roger as well. - Apart from a hiatus Queen has been alive since 1970 - and before that Roger and Brian had a band called Smile. The singer/bassplayer stopped and Freddie came in - - and changed the name to Queen - and at last they found John Deacon, bass - who left the group after Freddie died. The new singer/frontman is Adam Lambert - for about 14 years.

I had no idea how much enjoyment I was gonna get out of seeing you become Freddy Mercury-ized. This performance took place the year I was born. Crazy to think about. I wish Freddy was still around.

My young brother, please do their live performance in Montreal of Freddie’s homage to one of his idols, Aretha Franklin “Somebody to Love” easily one of his greatest performances that will slap you and drag you to church with drummer Roger Taylor’s back up vocals, John Beacon’s slapping bass and Roger May’s fab work on his “Red Special” built by him and his father from household items and whatnot because a new guitar was out of the family budget. He still relies on the instrument. Also during this Live Aid performance, Brian switches between three guitars during “Crazy Thing Called Love.”

When I watch gun's n roses I think they are heavily influenced by Queen if you look at Axel Roses energy on stage and Slash's sheer talent on the guitar they remind me a lot of Freddy Mercury and Brian May. Also the song radio gaga is where lady gaga got her name she is a big Queen fan. Queen are the true GOAT's of rock.

Radio GaGa song was because the media had started to talk crap about him and Queen. The first time the media had really tried to persecute someone. he wrote it as a response to tell them i dont give a shit what you say about us. extremely brave at the time given his sexuality and speaking out about it.

Freddie didnt write Radio Gaga. Roger Taylor wrote it. It's a homage to radio as MTV and music videos started taking over and becoming more popular. Roger's child at the time was heard to say "Radio Caca" which gave him the idea.
