- X-Men 97 episode 4 is here! Jubilee turns 18 but Magneto doesn't want to celebrate. Instead, Jubilee and Roberto Da Costa (aka Sunspot) get sucked into a video game made by the villain Mojo. Meanwhile, Storm and Forge get together to figure out how to get Storm's powers back.

8:55 There's precedence for seeing someone do something with your body then replicating the powers. Iceman got taken over by Emma Frost and she showed him he could freeze people's blood, and damn near teleport by merging with streams and rivers.
Small tidbit: Jubilee is doing more than just fireworks, it's straight up plasma she's manipulating. It becomes a lot stronger.
interesting that it was emma frost who taught him that since Emma does the same with jubileee via Synch who denotates a bunch of phalanx up by letting him see how her powers truly work so that he can properly mimic it.

The owl is a demon called the Adversary. He can only be defeated by magic. Forge has training as a Shaman and Storm is descended from a long line of sorceresses in addition to being a mutant.

40+ here. This one hit close to home. Skinny Mojo unsettled me until they made it right.
If Mojo was live action he would be like a Dune villain.
He was starving for ratings, lol. He's feeds off of attention apparently which makes his character and the way he acts make a lot of sense. He'd probably shrivel up if no one paid attention to his work... sounds like social media.😂
The A.I. Jubilee is actually based on a tragic alternate reality version going by Abcissa. She was kidnapped by Mojo and made his personal slave. He made her a deal to give up her freedom willingly in order to prevent him from tampering with the cycle of the universe. But her tragic story is redeemed here!

"LifeDeath" is from the comics. It was a weapon Forge created to fight the Dire Wraiths that depowered Storm. He kept it from her, and she found out by accident when she overheard a call, IIRC.
The Dire Wraiths were the alien villains that Rom: Space-Knight came to Earth to fight. Forge's "Neutralizer" was designed to depower the technological "magic" powers the Dire Wraiths had.
Since things are in limbo Rom-wize {Disney did just allow Ikon in Marvel Future Fight} they changed it to Forge designing the prototype collars. Which, it is implied, Moira did further development work on.

I love watching your reactions to the episodes because I can see the joy on your faces as you're watching the show. I think Jubilee's power is pretty damaging when she really learns how to use it.
I think the owl character is an enemy of Forge called "The Adversary". I seem to remember reading an X-Men story where Forge first met The Adversary. I think it was back during the war (Vietnam most likely) he was talking about where all his group died but him. It's been a long time since I read the story so I'm sure I might be wrong in the name of the war and if all his group died.
I really hope they release a new X-Men game on all the consoles and PCs so that everyone can see how fun they are. Be nice if they combine the fighting game aspect with the adventure game style. Like having two games in one. Not like they couldn't do it I've just never seen it done before, but I haven't really played any newer games in about 10 years. Got a lot to catch up on.

Jubilee's power, like a lot of mutant powers tend to get more powerful as time goes on and they learn how to control them better. The first time I saw the Sunspot character was in X-Men Evolution, which by the way, I hope y'all get to watch the other X-men cartoons if you get the chance. I personally really love the cartoon, Wolverine and the X-Men XD

As soon as I saw the Motendo title, I knew it was going to be a Mojoverse story...Mojo is probably my favourite villain... unfortunately, there were no X-Babies ( if you know, you know ) as I was hoping for..but I got Forge, a favourite X-Men related character so I'm satisfied...!

I was never a hardcore comic reader, so I love that this show is inspiring me to look all those villains up. The Adversary seems to be a scary foe and I'm very hype for next week.
Jubilee is a lot more powerful than you think. Her "fireworks" are actually tiny nuclear explosions. She's just afraid of tapping into her full strength because she doesn't want to hurt anyone. In the comics, she recently detonated a massive nuclear explosion in space, where she didn't have to worry about hurting an innocent person.
The Adversary is a demon and a multidimensional threat, he is a very powerful being on a cosmic level. This is not virtual world or anything like that, the Adversary could literally bend reality so whatever is happening in the animation is happening to the real world and also the adversary was there from the beginning, watching them from the shadows, being the environment, you can literally see his/her/it face on one of the hills when Storm reaches the edge the first time around. That is the Adversary, a being that is part of the world and in the meantime can manipulate it.
His name is Forge.
The Marvel Vs Capcom 1 and 2 style animation made me feel like I was a kid again in the 90’s. I hope Capcom makes a new MVC game someday, and have an option to use this animation style! And have Jubilee be this awesome in the game.

Did anyone else see the Sauron reference during the moments that Jubilee and Sunspot were going through in Mojo's Sick Game/Tournament phases? That was a Very Excellent reference and since Mojo's Game was related to Jubilee's memories that moment in the Savage Land with Sauron actually happened in the 90s, that was very cool, Marvel's Sauron is literally my favorite character from the publisher and also an extremely powerful villain and one of the most wronged, I hope that maybe he can return in a dignified way in some future episode.

It's not even that I know America must play safe on when comes to fireworks probably rare for them to use other fireworks that besides blowing up the sky. Because compare to other countries for the longest they have use dangerous fireworks that blows up to the ground different kinds had explode on ppl hands and jaw. Even firework so powerful it destroy an entire factory to blames entirely.

People are so used to fireworks being used for visual entertainment they forget their still explosives. Close your first around even a small one and you'll probably lose it. Even so, this episode does a great job of making Jubilee's powers look absolutely badass.
And great observation with the chamber Forge created. Storm has severe claustrophobia, and being trapped in there may prove to be a trigger to what she's experiencing.
Emma Frost once said Jubilee is capable of being an Omega level mutant. She said that if she learns to focus, she can detonate on a subatomic level. Basically, making mini nukes from her hands. Just Jubilee hasn't gotten that far.

Mojo was more about tv and being a couch potato. Also, the escalation of giving audiences more and more to entertain them. The Grandmaster from Thor 3 is pretty much a version of Mojo.
Jubilee's powers at that point is like a bunch of tiny explosions. Imagine Gambit with pocket full of pebbles.
They should have had Magneto say "Welcome To Die!" like in the arcade game. Also I'd love to see a meeting of Mojo vs Deadpool.

The only thing I hated about Wolverine and the X-Men was what they did w/ Cyclops & Jean tbh. Everything else about the show was great tho imo (i.e. Nightcrawler, Genosha, the massive variety of mutants, etc).

If you look closely at the opening you could see Emma frost and the hellfire gala in there. The shows teasing them to appear i really hope we see Emma frost in this show.

Motendo was about remembering the past,reliving youthful innocence but having the maturity to move on,life/death was a cerebral thriller exploring forge/storm's bonds

The original voice actress voices the old Jubilee. She gave up the gig because she wanted an actual Asian to voice the character. She also was the main character on “Big Comfy Couch”. Look it up.
The first time I was introduced to Mojo was in Wolverine and the X-Men. He was freaky there too, his episodes were great

Fun facts about Jubilee, her powers aren't actual fireworks, she can mentally control plasma, which she does by splitting atoms. She has the potential to create atomic bombs. She's actually really powerful, but like we've seen, she's not that experienced

Fun set of episodes! Pacing is pretty fast (especially Lifedeath Pt.1), but given there's three seasons of '97 there'll be plenty of time for lots of stories.

Like the therapy theory, but the adversary is one of Storm (and Forge's) ultimate rogues gallery, aside from the Shadowking and yes the distorted world existed within the storyline after lifedeath... Part II has a certain point in it that has Storm in delirium, so thank you for the reminder -- a combination of both aspects of Adversary world and her delirium would be twice as wild (and new to watch)...I love the theory 🎉

Mojo is one of my favourite X-Men villains and I thought he was super funny in the original 1992 show who has aged phenomenally well in our current pop culture climate. A remarkably fitting villain who personifies everything wrong with the entertainment industry. He's essentially Marvel's Harvey Weinstein and an intergalactic executive producer pumping out content. I initially thought he was going to be the main villain for Deadpool 3, but it seems that Cassandra Nova will be the villain for that movie

I think the reason they did the split episode is there was too much in Lifedeath for one episode, but not enough for two. So, they threw in a small Jubilee story. My only complaint with the Jubilee story is the 16 bit graphics. The Playstation, Saturn and Nintendo 64 were out by 1997. Gamers had moved on to the 3D era of video games. That said, if the people behind TMNT Shredder's Revenge want to make a new X-Men arcade game, I would not complain.

18:13 I kinda like this read. Cause I have a bit of a problem with this episode as in pairing of this two stories felt odd. That theory (which would probably end up being wrong) makes them work on thematic level at least. The rest of the series, so far, is mind-blowingly good.

This was another great episode! I loved seeing the beginning of the "LifeDeath" story for Strom, and I can't wait for part 2 of this mini-arc! I can already tell this emotional character exploration of Storm is going to be one of my favorite mini arcs in the entire X-Men animated series franchise by the time part 2 completes the story. The "Motendo" stuff was also super fun and creative! Revisiting some of the greatest highlights from this iteration of the X-Men in 16-Bit from like an old X-Men arcade game spotlighting their greatest moments was super cool and fun! I also loved having a Jubilee episode because she's one of my personal favorite members of the X-Men! Having it be her birthday was also a really nice way to explore how far she's come since episode 1 of the original series! I'm also really starting to warm up to Roberto. It's been nice to see the world of the X-Men through his eyes as a newcomer to this family. 👀🎆 Overall, X-Men 97 continues to be my favorite thing Marvel has made on Disney Plus! 8/10 episode this week! 🙌🏽🌟✨️

I love this show more than I thought possible. And a big hoorah to all the retro game nods here and especially the chiptune music in the start. And yes, that was from old coin-ops. The Ninja Turtle looking one was from the X-Men Arcade game. It was by the same people who made Ninja Turtles and a series of franchise games that all the had the same look and play (Aliens, TMNT, X-Men, The Simpsons). I'm as much a retro game buff as an X-Men one and caught every nod.

The cartoon doesn’t match the comics, so anything can happen. However, Lifedeath was a pretty good story back in the day. I haven’t read it since it was published, but it is something i remember. If you have marvel unlimited or something, i’d recommend reading it after the season is over just to compare

in regards to jubilee's power. allow me to quote you a line from the 1994 comic X-men 36. context jubilee, emma frost a telepath, and everett, who has to sync with a mutant and user their powers are fighting a cybernetic creature called the phalanx who is trying to assimilate them and turn them into their servents.
emma frost: "if i understand you're mutant abilities correctly everett, you must see jubilee through my eyes to access her pyrokinetic abilities with your own powers and use her mutant gifts in ways that she has been afraid to. in short by denotating the very matter in which these techno-organic being are composed of on a sub-atomic level."
later during the alternate universe setting Age of Apocalypse book Gambit and the X-ternals, the narrates this line to us about jubilee while she is being chased through the sewers of i believe new york. "she's not a firecracker. she's an atom bomb. she can blow up these tunnels, collapse the entire island above her, crush the sick person chasing her, kill him. Jubilation Lee can do all of these things, but none of that will mend her broken heart."
essentially while jubilee calls her abilities "fireworks" what she is actually doing is nuclear fusion aka the process in which the sun fuels itself. So she essentially has the power of a hydrogen bomb rather than just an atomic bomb. but it seems that jubilee is aware, even if just subconciously, of how powerful her powers actually are and so she limits herself to using them only at the weakest level. aka using them like fireworks. i believe in a recent comic she was teleported to a pocket dimension while fighting a bunch of vampires and not having to worry about collateral damage she finally tapped into her powers more deeply than she has ever done and the the results were spectacular.
The events of this episode feels like a bottle episode, animated. There’s so little progression to the story. I just wonder if this was intended to air on Valentines. Each part has these rushed, random romances. This Forge and Storm just met, but they’re suppose to be so in love? Despite him lying to her. I do understand this is based on a comic but animated feels so rushed.
Your mom wanted you to avoid a sedentary life by not letting you play video games and now you spend your adult hood watching and reacting to shows and media. Oh the irony.
