You can argue about who came first with "psychedelic" rock, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Syd. Revolver may have come first, but Syd had a new concept of melody shapes that tumble and spill over bar lines, defying conventional logic and form. It's truly psychedelic because our minds are not perfectly linear machines, but organic and more willy-nilly than we like to admit. He takes you deep into your own consciousness as your mind is grappling with his elusive and catchy songs. In its way, completely untouchable genius. I bet the Beatles probably envied Syd at the time. Haven't even addressed the "octopus ride" of the lyrics.
@@dxublexxsplicitxxsplicit4943it would be silly to downplay his creativity as just schizophrenic manifestations, especially since he was writing since his teen years

***** No it was´t may be 1970, though I´m quite sure it´s from the 1969 sessions of his first album. The last time Syd saw a studio as recording artist was 1970. And personaly I don´t like the Pink Floyd stuff without Barrett but I like a few of his solo songs, that are still glooming through the ruins. But about octopus I´m afraid I have nothing else to say than I already did: the only great thing here is, that EMI was mad enough to publish this masterpiece as a single.

when i was in highschool and barely knowing about pink floyd....there was a great debate about 'who was pink floyd'. well i asked an obvious expert, my buddy kurt getchell (wearer of a denim jacket with floyd patches on every stitch) i asked kurt, who is pink floyd, roger or david? without missing a beat he said SYD BARRETT! nuf ced
Man was Barret great! No need to say i`m sorry for him. He has so much fans to suit him right even in the afterlife. Thank you Syd for the great music!
Haha really punky ! Although it reminds me on Brian Jones Solo on I wanna be you man. Or the Great Kinks Solos on their early Beat-Singles. But 1969 this is really outmoded. No uncool.
A few days ago I went to Earl's Court, to Wetherby Mansions where Syd lived between 1968-1970 and where this photo was taken. It was so so special, so atmospheric there. I always liked these pictures for the Madcap Laughs sessions. They had some atmosphere I have always liked. And even the place has a special atmosphere too. I loved that steet. It felt like Syd was there...so strange.
Syd Barrett was the heart and soul of Pink Floyd. Listen to Piper at the Gates of Dawn. They were diminished when he left. T he energy was absent. His is a very sad story.
IMO Syd was trying to achieve a wall of sound and in turn happiness in his music and again IMO he succeeded big time Kudos Syd!!! :) Words don`t necessarily have to be given meaning and can also be viewed as abstract sounds that add to the overall atmosphere developed in the music Lastly some would reason that Syd was one of the few sane ones among us by achieving a peaceful state of mind Maybe we are the crazies stuck focussed on external realities that never really satisfy? Peace
@TheOneartist I'm reading 'Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head' just now, which is a painstakingly well researched biography and very sympathetically and incisively written. It also quotes several sources but with Syd's enjoyment of old poems and writers like Hilaire Belloc and Lewis Carroll, then you can see where he managed to conjure that whimsical magic into songs from sometimes obscure lyrics!
In the ten years since you wrote this comment, I wonder if you've read Malcolm Jones' "Making of The Madcap Laughs." Highly recommended if you're still interested in the subject. It's free online.
The best lyric poetry I've ever read. And tailor-made for his Unique melodies and voice. His 'legend' status is not only justified, it's almost Incidental.
Remembering Syd Barrett born on January 6, 1946. He was an English singer, songwriter, and musician who co-founded the rock band Pink Floyd. Barrett named the group, was their original front-man, primary songwriter. He began a brief solo career in 1969 with the single "Octopus", followed by albums The Madcap Laughs (1970) and Barrett (1970), recorded with the aid of members of Pink Floyd. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syd_Barrett
"Grasshoppers green herbarian band" is such a great lyric. It just tumbles off the tongue while conjuring some vivid psychedelic imagery. It's like something out of Alice in Wonderland.
yeah. wish i heard more stories as to why he was unapproachable. just some rumours that he became pretty nasty and grumpy in the back half of his life. seems like he also got into a row with his sister for a bit.
The band commemorated him with songs, but they owe his estate about a half billion . He is co-responsible for the band, their direction, and even their name.
Having taken LSD several times in my youth (80s-90s) I sometimes wonder If I'd have recovered if I'd been around to take it in the 60s/early 70s. Reportedly much stronger and far less awareness in those times. Syd and many others including Peter Green seemed to struggle recovering from acid induced psychosis. Less common today, as was the genius of Syd.
Acid doesn't cause any permanent psychosis. Look it up. There's no evidence of it doing so. Syd had underlying mental issues, which drugs can trigger or accelerate the onset of.
It's based on an old poem Rilloby Rill by Henry Newbolt, 1912 I think. Check the lyrics compared to the song! Syd was a genius though. Who would have thought of using that sort of obscure inspiration? RIP
@94julencio not at all, some syd songs or the beatles or any other psychedelic band you can clearly see lsd influence. You are saying yourself about syd being on reminded by this, we love syd way too much to think that. Syd was a genious in music scene and with painting. If you have problems its not my fault. Have a nice day and close your eyes to the octopus ride!
Syd in pictures like this with the hair, darkened eyes and cigarette just looks like the future of punk and of grunge and goth, this guy is important
Very spot on comment.i❤️💚💛
And a bit reminds me Marc Bolan T.Rex period.
