This is a really cool project. The remote throttle actuation takes it a bit outside of the ordinary. How come it doesn't have its own playlist? It deserves one! I'm new to your channel and the playlists are a really nice way to go through old videos.

As a retired mechanic of over 50 years who has done a good bit of welding. I must say that weld is not bad. It may not look like a weld a professional welder might make[after all he welds every day], but that is just a pretty good weld. Not bad at all.
That is a very handy piece of gear for small jobs. Your run/idle solution is ingenious. Good job! 👍
As someone with zero knowledge about engines and electronics, I feel really relatable to that zip tie fix. That's something I could still probably manage! ;)

Not sure that zip-tye fix is the best idea. I think it would limit full operation (over speed) of the governor. A heavier spring or shorter spring might be a better solution.
@@davidkepley4396 I agree, even the uv resistant black zip tie will eventually break down, and of course at wrong time. Im surprised that the solenoid shaft isn't adjustable for this exact purpose.
Fun to watch the gears turning as you worked out the solenoid issue(s), you found a way to make it happen. This Roller/Compactor makes for a perfect tool for creating a hardpack surface. Takes quite a few steps to do it right. That road will be there for a very long time, especially with you maintaining it as you will.

It was not my intention, I had this video planned before he released his And I was disappointed to see that he did not fix the one he bought, I’m a big fan of his and he must be doing well because he is buying lots of new equipment I see

The neighbor totally did you a complete solid. The paint is the least goobered part of the whole build. Lipstick on a pig is still a pig. Great build, glad it worked, looks good. You could use a magnet to mount the remote to your fender as well as a magnetic Beer holder!

Paint looks perfect from where I am (Houston)...best part is the drum 1/2 painted. It’s for safety, you can see when it’s rolling! Keep up the great work, I look forward to the vids each week! I hope you don’t mind the good natured comments and my lame attempts at humor.

And now that you have the new great auto unit. with a little time and patience you keep your units looking great. Matt, You could have used a single circuit to the solenoid. When the solenoid moves, you could open the current path to the pick part of the solenoid using that motion to push a momentary switch. Using a little lever and a spring, you could limit the amount of push on the switch to simulate a thumb push. Of course, you have what you need but this would have done the job with two wires to the tractor. That Kubota is a massive upgrade to the original motor. Nice bench lathe!

Paint looks fine to me. You would have had to do a lot of metalwork to get a new looking result. It's always amazing how you can cobble something out of junk.
I just hate seeing brush strokes, spraying it would’ve looked much better
@@DieselCreek I know what you mean. Is that sandable paint? Something like Rustoleum oil base is hard to sand. but maybe next year if it still bothers you, sand and spray it again. You might need to make a paint booth for your crusty equipment to get painted in.
Andrew Camarata (youtuber) bought a huge Hyster vibratory roller, which ran great, but had a hydraulic leak. Asking price was $2000.00. he bought it and found it to be too hard to work on, and too big for what he needed. So he bought one that fit his skid steer. And sold the Hyster, probably for a profit.

If someone hasn't already mentioned it, I fear the zip tie will wear out quickly. Would you consider inserting a bolt inside the throttle spring, with a couple of large washers on each end to keep it inside the spring, with a nut on the end to allow you to fine-tune the idle speed? Use some Loctite on the threads to keep the nut from vibrating loose, or try a nylon insert nut, so it doesn't vibrate loose, perhaps? My wife & are are sure enjoying your videos! I've learned SO MUCH from your comments & methods. Thank you for providing this excellent resource to us all!

Shows like yours, or channels, have definitely changed the way and what people watch on TV, since their is very little meaningful content on the major networks anymore.
Love how you find 'cheap' stuff that needs a good home; fix it up; and put it to use on the 'Farm'. The rest of the world needs to do more Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse more stuff. Keep it coming. -Will

These welding videos are astounding. I can't believe how modern cameras can tolerate looking directly at an arc! Instant death for the old cams!! lol. Fun shit to watch. The cut-off wheel scenes are beautiful.

At fifty feet or fifty mph paint looks good enough for me but I'm a dirty neck Alaskan. I have got to admit that I expect a minimum of take two, three and counting at the cost of your own pride cause that always happens to me also. You might have to add a counter balance on the tail end of things to get best compression cause thats a very small compactor that would do floors and lots of stuff where cement comes into place. I sure do laugh when your expecting it to start or you forget the key, its little things like that that keep me grounded. No matter what, I always looked for guys like you who could think on their feet and fix/redo something to make life better when I was logging. I see so many things that could keep me occupied till I tip over (73) which is odd to me each morning. I never took care of me when younger and severely paying for it now. You have a slice of heaven for the meantime till tourists see how nice it is.
Tourists aren’t the issue out here it’s the oil and gas industry trying to build refineries all over the hillsides
For many years I worked as a maintenance mechanic in a large wielding factory. Every time you start to weld, the glow form the welfibg arc. Still makes my eyes slam shut.

Nice work! A Kubota diesel is a solid choice and I enjoyed seeing you optimize it for the application. An air-cooled Deutz diesel would also be a good choice for that compactor; they're built to run at steady RPM for extended periods of time on pumps, generators, and certain mobile equipment.
After watching a gazillion YT videos, I'm fairly certain I'm the only person in the world who uses a sawzall with a metal cutting blade. Never got into cut off discs. Nice job on the roller! I can see where something like that would have made some of my projects turn out better. Thanks!
I primarily go for the sawzall with good carbide teeth steel blades to cut exhaust pipe and other things like old cast iron drains, conduit and more. it sure zips through exhaust pipe fast.
Sawzalls are GREAT for cutting tree roots. Use a blade with about 5-8 teeth per inch. You can get them for about $2-3. Pull the trigger and the blade will dig itself right into the ground and there go the roots!
That zip tie trick was a good solution.

Audiobooks at least a couple of days trial, I personally have gotten many people addicted!

That's honestly a brilliant find, using an ignition switch for the solenoid. I would've massively over complicated this if I had to build it myself, and probably would've ended up with two switches. This is so much cleaner and easier.
I don't think your switch is the issue though, unless there's a big resistor inside the switch. If it was trying to pull in the solenoid, and that would take so much current, the switch would heat up pretty quickly. Your new setup is probably the same what I would've ended up with.

It was likely just voltage drop over such a long cable. Thicker cable lowered the voltage drop. Putting a relay closer to the battery and solenoid probably would have fixed it also.
The key switch would have worked if the wiring had been good. You should have checked over the wiring before giving up on the key switch.
Last thing to do is put a solenoid on the stop lever and wire it to a red button on your remote throttle box. Realistically, it wouldn't take much to move it all onto a remote box including automating raising and lowering the wheels, starting the engine. Three position toggle switch, centre off, and solenoid valves on the pneumatics. Still, looking good so far. Amazing progress considering its just a side project. Keep on and stay safe in this crazy world. :D
Add few solenoids, make a slightly larger remote panel, few more wires
in the umbilical. Your remote "box" could have a wheel control, digital
RPM, Temp, Fuel level gauges, vibrate engagement, and a keyed
start/stop or just a safety red STOP button.
Add all the creature comforts that make one of these really expensive.
The setup you have now is fine, and it works for now.
It could use a red led "Power" indicator.
These are just suggestions for the future.

Watching you tow that vibrator roller along your road just warmed my heart...its a job I had with our main roads department using a big farm type tractor and towing a 72 inch powered roller [ it had a separate diesel motor ] following the road forming graders...
You definitely need an ice chest, a radio and an umbrella top mounted on the fender of your tractor brother! Be a dam good job to do then! lol 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻

My neighbor, Don, put asphalt millings on his farm machinery shed drive over existing gravel. What a difference it made. We live in NW Washington State.
Most of the time when I used DC we would put a resistor on the hold side because the inrush of the coil is a lot and it doesn't take a lot to hold it in. It would be easy to figure what you need to lower the dc resistance of the coil by measuring the resistance of the coil and remember that if you put a resistor of 1/4th the resistance of the coil and and put that in series with the coil on the hold side the coil will work and last for a long time, if not probably not that long.
You can probably use one of those resistors they put on coils on GM Cars before electronic ignition!

The result is really great with this.
The only thing I may have done differently is have the gauges where you can see them from the driver seat of the tractor, or at least a couple of warning lights on the "remote control" that would tell you if oil pressure was low or temp was too high.
Took a couple of years, but the result was great.
Use a relay at the machine end to carry the 'pull' function current only via the small remote cable, the rest already works.
Wiring for me is pretty easy.Before I retired I was a senior field engineer for X-Ray equipment manufacturers.😎

Matt, What you need to do is wire the pull function to a 2 post starter solenoid, which you can get at any parts store. All you do is run your pull wire from the key switch to the small signa/trigger post on that solenoid, then run a length of 10 gauge wire from your battery positive to one big post on the solenoid then run another 10 gauge from the second post over to the pull terminal on the throttle solenoid. I’m sure you know this already but this will allow the high amp load to be switched by the big solenoid and the only load on your key switch will be the 2 or 3 amps it takes to close the contacts on the new solenoid.
You never did replace the drive belts.

I love projects such as this. My first wifes bro in law gave me an old P&H Welder 1949 model had a V4 Wisconsin with rod through the block. I traded for a VF4E Wisconsin. Cost me a bottle of Jack Daniels. Best Welder I ever owned. Made a novice Look like a pro.
Lasted through 3 marriages.
My neighbor thought je was doing me a favor last year when he plowed my driveway. He pushed all the snow across my front yard destroying my lawn and burying my front porch.

A guard or no guard anyone that actually uses them uses gloves and doesn't stand or any body parts in the same plan of rotation with that disk i know its hard to understand that safety is a thing that happens behind your eye balls
You do pretty darn good on the electricals. The breadth of you mechanical is marvelous.
Too much fun! That was brilliant solution using the ignition key switch that didn't work. Relays are not that difficult but they do require basic understanding of their use and can be more of a install problem that the problem that they solve! But you got it done!!! Yea.
It tickles me to say you have successfully got the vibrator or compactor running you're doing a really great job keep up the good work

Cool project! Glad to caught the video. I can appreciate the effort you put in to these TH-cam vids. I maintain and repair an entire fleet of diesel trucks/trailers/equipment including 1.5 Perkins up to X15 Cummins and every Ford diesel in between etc. Kubota’s, CATS, ASV, TORO. I couldn’t find the time to video and produce the footage!!! Tip my hat to all the men out here putting cool content on the Internet. Great job!
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, you have neighbors that give you engines and neighbors that like to paint your projects
Relays are simple. If you had stuck to your original switch, extension lead is perfect. As you saw the pull in was trying. A simple spot lamp relay would do the trick acting as a switch from battery to solenoid. The original ignition switch with the heavier cable would also have worked. It was the voltage drop that caused the problem.

You were concerned bout buddy’s paint job ,,,, n you couldn’t put the rubber on over the electrical straight lol 😂
I thought the same thing but if you look closely (at the time lapse when he was putting it on or you can see it more clearly when he is dealing with the muffler) the electrical box is not square, it is tapered. He drew a guide line for the rubber parallel to the back edge not the front and installed the rubber accordingly to give as much coverage as possible to the exposed backside of the box with the width of the piece he had. I was wondering why he mounted the reflector where he did obscuring some of the gauges & not parallel to the bottom of the electrical box???? That being said, with all of the repair work, improvising & engineering you have to admit he did a fantastic job & deserves a ton of credit & bottom line it makes him happy & he is pleased with the overall results!!!!
I would like to address the issue of pronunciation.
Every community in the entire world, even though speaking the same base language, has it's own and individual sound for each word in it's arsenal; people living just a mile apart will pronounce the same word differently to their neighbours, this is what makes us all unique.

I see a disk imbedded in your arm or stomach if you keep handling your cut-off like that. That would suck!. Keep your body parts out of the plane of rotation. Always ask yourself .. what if..?. the disk would shatter... Where is it going.....??

You can use that switch Just add a Relay to take the amps Away from the switch relays are pretty cheap and easy Compared to Expensive high Amp Switches Matt 17:20 @Diesel Creek
a suggestion. Measure the distances of the spring travel. Open and closed. The point being sunlight degrades plastic zip ties. After parking it , when you go to use it next year, it may work and then suddenly it wont. also measure the pull requirements . You may be able to substitute a solid linkage to replace the spring. Maybe a chain or cable with an adjustable linkage on one end.
I’m gonna find a more permanent solution that was just to get it going

I believe all you would need is a starter solenoid for a lawn tractor to make that work with the key switch. That way you can take the large power wire strait from the battery to the throttle. You just need a small amount of power to activate it.
I really enjoy your content. To the comment "does this guy ever gets something done?"...You just show us how much pita it is to get stuff done as a hobby and that must stuff just takes a really long time....
