Congratulations 🎉. But I don't get why he applied to 40 schools and I've seen others do this too. The process is stressful and it's not free. I would suggest to just choose your top 5, max 10 if your trying to get a full ride scholarship. But only apply to the addtl schools if you're honestly considering attending. I got a free ride but it wasn't my 1st choice. The school I desired gave me an academic scholarship only and I chose it. I also had some other scholarships from private organizations. I owed a little but didn't regret my choice. Validation comes from within and not from others. Save those application fees for books and other essentials.
