  • Sage is a lovely herb. Not only is it tasty in cooking, it's also great to use medicinally. It should be pruned every year to encourage new growth. Here's a video showing how and when to cut it back.

      You can do it at any time of the dormant stage (usually from late October onwards), but I like to use sage over Yule (to make stuffing, etc.) and I use Imbolc as a reminder it's time to prune. Good luck :)

    I accidentally broke a branch off my sage the other day and was quite upset that I might have damaged it, but this has reassured me that it will grow back nicely. :) I'll tidy it up properly now. Thanks! The branch is thriving in some water now, so when it pushes out a bit more green growth I'll try and take some cuttings from it too.

  • @jennifergarbowski2877
    @jennifergarbowski2877 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Michael: I have neglected to prune my sage for several years (Until this video, I didn't realize I should be doing so). there is a LOT of old "dead" wood that looks like a mess of bramble underneath the live portions. Is there any fix for this?

    • @happysnapper2001
      @happysnapper2001  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fear not, all is well. If the wood is actually dead (give the bark a scratch with your fingernail, if it's alive you'll see green. If it's just more deadwood, then it's dead) you can cut it out as you wish. This will allow the living wood to have more growing room and air. If the "deadwood" is alive, cut it back and you should see fresh growth come the Spring. I hope this helps. If you are still nervous about giving a good, harsh pruning, you may want to try pruning part of the plant (maybe half) then you can compare the two.

    Hey Michael! So I should have done some research before pruning my sage but today I cut my sage bush back so there is only 6-7 cm of old shoots coming from the ground. Its is beginning of april and there is no new growth yet. The bush has been growing very healthy for many years. Will she be okay this season?

    • @happysnapper2001
      @happysnapper2001  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. The simple answer is I can't say. The important thing is that you left some live nodes on the stem to allow new growth. The only thing I can suggest is to sit tight and hope, and let Mother Nature do her thing.

      Hi Maria. It would be best to leave it until late Autumn before giving it a good hard cutback. The plant will then be in a dormant stage. If you want to use some sage during winter for cooking, etc. you can always leave some stalks with leaves uncut, and then prune them in the early spring. I hope this helps.
