I bought two Salvia plants at the nursery and what a wonderful plant for all sorts of bees and butterflies. They were similar to yours, but the foliage was darker and all parts of the plant are highly fragrant when crushed. I cut them back like you did, but I made as many cuttings as i could and simply put them in a jar with tap water. In about a month they had produced roots, and I had another 15 plants. I repeated the process, again and again and filled the garden with the plants. What I like most, is the flowering time, all year round just cut them back like you did. In a hot summer a little watering every 2-3 days will keep them going.
Hi Gary, that is so wonderful how many plants you were able to make from those cuttings 🌱 I find that s9 fascinating and such a fun thing to do. Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
Thank you for sharing how you put them in water! I have 2 white plants and just planted 2 pink. I wanted more white but can't seem to find them. So I will try this method! 👍
You put your clippings with whatever is left of the bloom still attached at the top of the spike into water as is? And it grows roots and becomes a new plant?
@@jak30341 No, I obey normal cutting rules using what I've cut off. That is cut below a node, then snip the top off, leaving a couple of leaves. The cutting should be long enough to stand in the jar with the node at the bottom. One piece may give you 2 to 3 cuttings, so long as you've got a node at the bottom and a couple of leaves at the top of the cutting, this plant isn't fussy.
Great information on trimming our salvia. I'm 81 years old and am beginning to become very interested in gardening with flowers an bushes...my new hobby. Thank you and bless you.

@HookedandRooted Your most welcome. Glad I ran across your channel again it's been a while since I have had the opportunity learning all the things you share. I live in Arkansas so our climates are different but the smart ideas you have are universal working for everyone and I think inclusion is so very important when we all have different processes hoping for success. Gardeners are the hardest working people, we will work our gardens from can till can't. That means from when we can see till when we can't in the heat of summer and cold of winter. Hope this message makes sense. People say I speak in riddles. Lol Here is a funny answer I came up with years ago you can share . When someone says to me I must have a green thumb; I say no its a brown thumb you have to keep your hands in the soil to be successful.
PLUS you can cut off the flowers on the stems you cut off and place the rest of the stems in water and let them root and you will have lots more plants for your yard. Take off the bottom leaves you don't want them in the water leave the ones on top alone.🌵🌵 oops just read that everyone has the same idea suggestion.🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣
I was going to add that those cuttings could also be potted for making new plants. Just a bit of rooting powder and moist soil in a clay pot and in a few weeks, new plants to add to your garden. @@JWHealing Thanks for the encouragement and information. I have been able to propagate Autumn Joy sedum, in spite of my own failings, because it just seeds itself close to an area where it is growing. After many years, I have seven, three of which are huge, sedum, one of which must be dug up next year to make room for air. I know I can cut these and just stick them in the ground and they will grow. I am going to try and give the established plants, rooted and all, to some gardeners nearby, as I know how expensive they can be. I also have three year old serendipity allium that look like they could be divided next year easily. In the UK we call this the Chelsea chop, this takes place around the end of May when the Chelsea RHS show is on to remind everyone. You can do this method on a lot of different perennials.
Hello. Yes, this is exactly how I’ve always pruned all my salvias - for the simple reason that my hummingbirds love them as a source of nectar. So, I never wanted to totally eliminate their food source, therefore I also only prune 1/2-2/3 of the plant in such a way, as to reduce it in size, shape it, and leave enough stalks with flowers or soon to open flowers that the bees, hummingbirds, & other insects love it!! I’m glad you prune the same way.

I'm in Houston Zone 9a. Here salvias grow super fast and after a heavy rain, they tip over and become a mess. I have been searching when and how much to prune since 3 years ago. Your video is perfect!
In a Chicago Botanical Garden trial, they cut back half their salvias to see how it affected reblooming. They found that it didn't matter as far as affecting reblooming. But the did note that the new flower spikes on the ones that were cut back perhaps stood out more without the old spikes still on the plant.
Thank you so much love all of mine in my back & front yard seems like every year they get bigger and bigger very gorgeous plants they come out every year beautifully
Thank you so much. My wife and I just moved to a new place. I want to plant Salvia around the mailbox. I'm glad to learn the staggered pruning. Is Salvia a perennial?
Thanks for the tip! Just about ready to prune my Salvia Nemorosa and I’m also going to give your method a go especially as I have lots of these plants threaded through a large flowerbed. (UK)
Thanks for the helpful video. I noticed a different youtuber who only cut just the flowerhead off. Have you tried this method? Or have you found cutting some foliage off works better for you?
So appreciate the time line, she offers in this video and examples of what a salvia looks like that is ready to be thinned out. With all the spent cuttings can you use the cuttings to create more plants in another area? Does anyone know thinning out techniques for petunias?

Will definitely try to be organized enough to prune my salvia like this. I usually wait too long and they look very seedy and need to be cut back badly. But like this idea very much. Thanks.
Hi Maureen, I think its a great method. When you get arouind to pruning them, just remember either front or backs, then go back in a week or 2 and do the other side.
Could you let us know which zone you are in? Beautiful yard. I know the zone not relevant to the way to prune, I am just curious. Brand new subscriber.
I love your videos could you help me with identifying what species of what appears to be maybe a Yellow Mop Head Cypress evergreen in the back ground? I saw this video and I have been trying online to find the same dwarf type tree for my garden. It’s just stunning!! How old is yours and have you been pruning the bottom along the way to get this lovely shape and profile for this plant grouping in your bed along with the Salvia. Thanks a bunch Steph 💗💗
Thank you so much! That is called, a yellow mop, or golden mop false cypress. I made a video on how i pruned it into a small evergreen topiary tree: th-cam.com/video/wHvsmtci1Tc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=r_4k_teuMD5HzRxL
What a great tip! I am currently waiting for mine to come back. Not pretty. My salvia is different than yours though. I cut the tall one in the center out & two come from that on either side. But that is just deadheading, not pruning. Majestic blue i think is the name. It gets quite tall.
Hi there, each year the plant gets bigger. So time will make your perennial larger. It blooms once in early to mid spring. By cutting it back after it blooms the first time, you get a second flush of blooms. If you don't cut it back, once it blooms once, you will only get a couple of sporadic blooms and the plant will be done for the season and turn its energy to producing seed instead of producing more blooms. Hope this helps 🌱
Full sun. If plants get more shade than they prefer, that come sometimes cause flopping. Also, soil that is too rich/fertile can cause flopping. For example sedum prefers a well draining, infertile soil in full sun in order to do best and not flop in the center, same is true for plants like Russian sage. And I would say for Salvia as well. Hope this helps Selina, -Steph 🌱
@@HookedandRooted Thank you! They get full sun, so I'm thinking it's the soil. They were fine in 2022, but last year and this year the larger ones have drooped. I think the abundance of rain that we get has also contributed. I'm excited to try your pruning method, though! 🙂
Hi Diane! My Iris foliage stays mostly good and Upright. I do get some browning and a spotting on some foliage. Those I clean up when going around weeding or deadheading. Thanks for watching! 🌱
A friend just gave me 2 salvias that were pretty dried out no nice blooms or anything I'm gonna cut them back and plant them the way you did and hopefully they spring back. What do you think?

Does anyone know thinning out techniques for petunias?
Great tip to do the half chop!
I've never heard or read of that before!
And I LOVE salvias! Especially pink marvel.
Give it a try! Hope you like it. Thanks for watching!
I just bought this type of salvia, so this is great info. Thanks for sharing!
Now that I already cut all of mine back I'm praying it will come back up. It's mid Aug . & and my first experience . I just happened by " Serendipity " to you !
Thank you & bless this my Cottage Garden 🕯. I'm so glad
GOD HAS HID HAND IN.
THIS . I have some hollister I'm transplanting into full sun because the hi moisture / afternoon sun is a killer on it . (Lesson learned off that label !) It sure looks a lot like this 🤗
Good info. Thanks Steph
You are so welcome!
Oh you are so smart!!
Great tip, Steph! Thank you😀
Will definitely try to be organized enough to prune my salvia like this. I usually wait too long and they look very seedy and need to be cut back badly. But like this idea very much. Thanks.
Hi Maureen, I think its a great method. When you get arouind to pruning them, just remember either front or backs, then go back in a week or 2 and do the other side.
This is such a wonderful way to prune Salvia, I just purchased some and I will be using this method, thanks.🤗🤗🤗🤗
Could you let us know which zone you are in? Beautiful yard. I know the zone not relevant to the way to prune, I am just curious. Brand new subscriber.
Wow! Awesome tip, I’m going to try it on my plants.
Beautiful yard!!❤❤
Thank you Deb!
Great tip! I gotta know what is that beautiful plant with the yellow leaves and pink flowers??
Hi there, it's a Proven Winners Candy Corn Spirea. I actually recently talked about it here: th-cam.com/video/CReMpC4eC7U/w-d-xo.html
Excellent tip! Why didn't I think of this!
Our salvia is developing hollow centers. Why do some plants develop that hollow in the middle?
Love the color in your garden. What is that plant with the yellow top?
Thank you so much! That is called, a yellow mop, or golden mop false cypress. I made a video on how i pruned it into a small evergreen topiary tree: th-cam.com/video/wHvsmtci1Tc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=r_4k_teuMD5HzRxL
What is the yellow plant with pink flowers at 4:00? 😮😮
Looks like “Double Play® Candy Corn® Spirea” 😊
I would like to know how you decided where to make the cut. I thought the video would show us where to do that, specifically.
What a great tip! I am currently waiting for mine to come back. Not pretty. My salvia is different than yours though. I cut the tall one in the center out & two come from that on either side. But that is just deadheading, not pruning.
Majestic blue i think is the name. It gets quite tall.
Brand new gardener here. How does it ever get any bigger if you continue to do this? Thanks for the video!
Awesome. What's your best tip for keeping the salvia from drooping?
Very informative, thank you!!
I too only trim back to a “y” stem. I’m afraid to do the big chop😮
Blue sage is also edible and makes a fantastic herb for cooking
Great tip steph, question, will your iris greens stay nice and green all summer.? Looks like a nice grass.
Hi Diane! My Iris foliage stays mostly good and Upright. I do get some browning and a spotting on some foliage. Those I clean up when going around weeding or deadheading. Thanks for watching! 🌱
A friend just gave me 2 salvias that were pretty dried out no nice blooms or anything
I'm gonna cut them back and plant them the way you did and hopefully they spring back. What do you think?
I couldn’t really tell how far you went down to cut the salvias. Bi hope I did mine right. I need the zoom feature! To see where to cut..
So if all the blooms are gone, do you suggest just cutting it all the way back? Is it almost all the way to the ground we cut?
