Sailor Naginata Togi Nibs: Explanation and Writing Demonstration

  • Sailor makes some of the best fountain pen nibs in the world, and Brian Goulet shows you why the Naginata Togi is one of those. Ground in such a way that it writes with varying degrees of line thickness based on your writing angle like Sailor's Zoom nib, AND how it writes with a thin downstroke and thicker cross stroke like an architect nib, this complex grind is something few can achieve. Up until 2021 it's only been available in Sailor's limited bespoke line. While still fairly limited, they've cracked the door open just a hair to get these nibs into more people's hands. Brian demonstrates all three available nib options, medium-fine, medium, and broad. Enjoy!

Yes, they’re pretty different, actually. Oblique broad is pretty much just a broad...at a certain angle it has a sliiiiiiight bit of line variation to it like a stub, but more subtle. The line variation of the Naginata Togi blows the OB out of the water, in my personal opinion. -Brian Goulet

Doesn’t Aurora make a nib that is just like this? I believe it’s the goccia nib. Don’t hold me to the spelling and please correct me if I am wrong

They have! it’s similar but not quite as dramatic as this...and I believe the Goccia is only one nib size. I was able to test it for myself but I don’t know that Aurora ever officially rolled it out...perhaps they did in limited markets globally but they’ve never made them available to us. -Brian Goulet

@@Gouletpens I have one, but I believe it is only one nib size. It is available here in the US as I was able to get one about. Year ago from a US retailer. Jim

Really dissapointing what you said. Took the Montblanc 149 and it does the same thing just putting more pressure you have a large writing! So please where is the speciality? Probably you have not to regulate the nib?? Because it can happens also with other Montblanc that are not so good in quality ! but worth a little!

Montblanc doesn't offer anything like this. Yes, the design of the pen body is a 146 rip-off; no argument. But the nib is a whole other story. Sailor has some of the most interesting nibs on the market, and IMO much better than Montblanc, even their standard nibs. Montblanc is a total rip-off. I'm not saying their bad, they're perfectly fine pens, but probably only worth the cost of a 3776. Brand name doesn't matter. What matters is the quality of the actual pen and nib balanced against the cost. I'll never understand why anyone would purchase a Montblanc. I just can't fathom the justification for that value proposition.

I cannot justify spending that much for a pen which writes like this. I could see it if I was a Japanese or Chinese businessman, but I'm not.
