  • Due to a lack of decent roller skate repair videos on youtube, we at StrictlyDerby.com decided to make a series of do it yourself videos to make you comfortable working on your skate.
    Whenever we travel to bouts or practices it is the number one question we always get. We have realized that most girls are not comfortable doing it themselves and they are more than capable. Feel free to comtact us at the shop if you have any questions or are interested in having us come to one of your bouts, practices, or put your team on our sponsorship program.
    Thanks,

    maybe you don't know a thing about washers or maybe you forgot to mention there are 2 sides to them, one side is rough and one side is smooth and polished. for those wanting to 'not' destroy their bearings, it's best to put the polished shiny side towards the bearing and the unfinished side towards the truck.... you can thank me later. ~ kev.

      If they don't come with washers is it necessary to install them? And if so what size should I use? I'm putting together my first pair of skates so this sort of information really helps!

      @@ZoeInWonderland95 Even on skates that come with washers, they're not ABSOLUTELY needed. To use them or not is up to you. The size depends on your axles. Axles only come in two sizes...7mm or 8mm. Look at the bearings you have. You will see 608, 628, etc. or 607, 627, etc. That last number - the 7 or the 8 - is what denotes your axle size. If the number ends with 8, you have 8mm axles...likewise, if the last number is a 7, you have 7mm axles.

      Is the rough side going to “sand” wear down the axle? Mine look pretty worn

  • @MystiqueRisingSun
    @MystiqueRisingSun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    NEVER use the axle! 44 years of skating, I've seen that damage more bearings - AND the axles themselves - than screwdrivers.
    Also, if you're serious about skating (derby, artistic, or otherwise), you'll also have a bag with tools and some basic extras on hand at all times. Fanny packs and drawstring backpacks are great for holding items when skating outdoors. Regular backpacks or tote bags are easier for rink skating.

    Gret video.
    Kinda curious why no bearing spacers?
    I get that the wheels have a flanged design for the bearing to stay seated against the wheel. But that nut is pressing only against the outer bearing and nothing else.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No spacers because wheels don't actually need bearing spacers. That's an individual choice. It has nothing to do with the nut, but some speed skaters swear they can go faster with the spacers than without them. When .002 seconds counts in a race...it's a good thing to have. If you're hitting the rink or your neighborhood, they're kind of useless and only gets you to spend money on things that aren't necessary. I'd much rather spend money on a complete set of spare axle lock nuts than 4 bearing spacers. As far as the nut pressing against the wheel, that would be washers - not bearing spacers - you'd need if you wanted something in between. Bearing spacers go between the bearings...not against the axle lock nuts.

    hi!,a question, longboard wheels is the I put my quad roller skates ?

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put skateboard wheels on roller skates - and vice versa....just remember that some skateboards have a riser to allow bigger wheels, such as 70 or 80mm wheels. Most roller skates will only comfortably hold a 65mm or smaller wheel. A 70mm wheel will fit on some, but many have issues when it comes to turning if their trucks are loose because the plate of the skate will "scrape" the taller wheel.

      A size 4 child's IS the same as an adult 4. It's once you hit size 5 that it begins to differ a bit as size 5's are considered the 'smallest adult" size, even though many children's shoes go up to a size 6. The main difference between a child 5 and adult 5 (or 6) is that children's feet are typically more narrow than an adult's foot.

      @@jodygirl I only recently started skating outside everyday and taking care of my wheels and bearings. I thought bearings were either metal or ceramic, with no clue about most common knowledge. Tbh I didn't know that the wheels had bearings that were sold separately until I wore my wheels down to the size of munchkins. I just got a set from eBay Cheap Skate Wheels and they have been the best thus far. The bearing cleaning vid on Indy jammy Jones channel is good, but I watched 4-5 vids and I only 1 mentioned that the solid metal bearings don't come apart. So much info I was unaware of.
