  • A Metal Aviation forum member asked what type of foam I use and why I use 9mm thickness. So here's my overview of Dollar Tree Foam. I also demonstrate how to quickly remove the paper covering.
    Please subscribe to this channel to help keep the DTF tips coming!

    Dollar tree, dollar general, and family dollar foam flies so nice. I didn't remove any of the paper and built a damn nice plane that flies so close to scale. Love the video, I came here cuz if you remove some of the paper, it's easier to make a round fuselage.

    • @MetalAviation
      @MetalAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back when I first started the channel, everyone was still on the depron bandwagon. I always used DTF instead, since it was cheaper and I don't like super light planes. Funny how times change. Back them peeps would start verbal fights with me over stating depron sucked and DTF was the way to go. Now everyone uses DTF. Weight is completely overrated in this hobby and depron still sucks.

    Thanks this worked perfectly on my 10mm foam board, sprayed it with 91% isopropyl alcohol,left it for about 30-40 seconds and the paper pealed right off in one piece 👍🏼👌

      Keep the paper. It'll dry back to normal and can be used for all kinds of things.

    I dabbed water\alcohol mix onto small paper towel and wiped the foam in areas paper where paper was still a tiny bit visible. What I found interesting is the foam smoothed over in area's I did that. So I did the area's where air flow or maybe "lamination" might be used and it is really smooth. Thanks for tip!

    • @MetalAviation
      @MetalAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great info! Smooth surface will definitely help when laminating, which I do a lot in my parkjet designs.

    • @MetalAviation
      @MetalAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so too. I tried a lot of different ways, and this works the best. And you can re-use the paper, since the fibers do not deteriorate from the alcohol. It's amazing what great shape the paper is in after it dries!

  • @toriweiler1950

    The paper acts like a second piece of foam. It's glued to the board, so it adds rigidity, and strength. However, the paper on the board is susceptible to moisture, so sealants or paint must be used so the paper over the board doesn't become inadvertently soaked when landing in wet grass, flying in humid weather, ect.

    The Adams foamboard today is somehow different. I found that using denatured alcohol instead of rubbing alcohol works better. It takes a little longer to penetrate but the paper peels off like it did for you here in this video. Thanks for the tips on laminating.

    • @MetalAviation
      @MetalAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Redibord from the dollar tree, the paper peels off without any need to wet it. I only remove the paper for areas I glue. The other areas I leave the paper on and coat with oil based minwax poly and use regular spray paint instead of tape for color.

      If you let the paper dry, it dries back to original form, and you can re-use it for other things. Something about the alcohol doesn't deteriorate the paper like plain water does.

    I build planes out of dollartree foamboard, and I also leave the paper on. You can see videos on this method on Flitetest and also experimental airlines on youtube. It makes the planes very strong and durable. The 2 most popular ways of making the planes waterproof, are sealing with boxing tape or minwax polyurethane, I build planes using both methods with very good results.

    dollar tree foamcore. .. I believe it's made by Adams... recently changed the adhesive on their product.
    I purchased about 10 sheets, cut out all my parts, went to peel them...they all tore.
    so, there may be some lingering old stock of the white that still peels, but the new stuff tears.
    also, I've heard the black foamcore will peels

    Will isopropyl alcohol damage a poster to remove dried bubbles?
    I've discovered bubbles appear when mounting a poster when using SPRAY adhesive for multiple reasons but rather instead using foam & poster board adhesive with an applicator from said adhesive bottle is MUCH more efficient.
    Any adhesive spray is trickier because people complaining about yellowy or brown colored spray have resulted in the sprays now being clear or white &
    preventing user from seeing how much is being applied resulting in over saturation resulting in bubbles & creases- Bad deal.
    Thank you.

    I have had some dollar tree foam that the paper wanted to rip. This works better!!!!!!

  • @greg0063
    @greg0063 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    At some point Dollar Tree's Foam supplier changed the foam glue from something difficult to remove, to just being able to peel it off at a corner. To get the paper to stick better without removing it, Minwax non water base polyurethane works. Or peel the paper and laminate with packing tape.

    • @burritos1000
      @burritos1000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Greg ory I have the opposite effect. I tried polyurethane and the paper peeled off easier than the untreated area. For sure the water based will de-laminate the paper.

    Just found out this video, and I looooove it. So happy I found it! Question for you. What do you use to cut the foam to make your plane. I’m looking for an option to cut it but I want it to be nicely cut on the edge. I checked your list of video and I couldn’t find it. Hope you can help.

    • @MetalAviation
      @MetalAviation  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I just use cheap plastic razor cutters from Harbor Freight. When I'm done building the plane, I sand all the edges, so the quality of cut doesn't matter, since I'm gonna sand every edge smooth anyway.

      +Chad Brailer I cut this stuff with a 100watt laser cutter all the time with the paper attached, but I could imagine that a wire cutter would have a hard time getting through the paper without being hot enough to cause it to catch fire. I have to have a compressor shooting down at 30psi to prevent the paper from flaming. Also you will note there will be a burn back of the foam from the paper cut line edge. It will dip back about 2-3mm from the paper inward.

      I use an air brush with acrylic alcohol 50/50 mix. So straight acrylic paint with brush should work fine.

      @@MetalAviation thanks ! Also how long would you think the paint would last ? I’m planning on using the board as a hanging piece for art work so no harsh elements are at play since it’ll mostly be used indoors

      @@tinaswisphers3433 I have an F-35 I made and painted black with the same acrylic/alcohol mix 7 years ago,, that I still fly today and have never repainted. I can't remember how many coats I put on, though. You could also clear coat it as a final coat.

    umm there is a better way less effort if its dollar tree foam board ADAMS witch it is just peel it off no spraying at all no ripping of paper no residue or chemicals

      +3xlicit E.A.R. Same here. No need for anything to get it off.
      I have had to spray water on dollar store stuff. But you let it dry a day before you peel it, then it's the same as the dollar tree stuff.
