I am rebuilding a VW experimental airplane engine conversion. It has been out of service since about 1985. Should I get a kit that is alcohol compatible. Just clean an inspect or buy a new CV carb Off eBay. Is there a kit manufacture you recommend? Where can I get a main jet for higher altitude. I am at 4000 above sea level and will be At 6000 to 10,000 above seat level. Thanks
I know this is an older video but I just wanted to share with everyone that Amazon sells an exact replacement carburetor for Harley Davidson motorcycles. Comes with extra size jets, replacement fuel line, fuel filter with clamps and two spark plugs all for under $50. USD. The fuel line connects are made of brass not plastic like this carburetor has… And for those that wonder why anyone would want to install one of these replica carburetor’s on their bike just check out TH-cam videos where people have installed one on their older Harley Davidson motorcycles. I’m not here to argue with anyone about this topic because it’s just a general thing that if you want to save money and get a good carburetor that works, plug and play once you hook up the gas lines and choke…They come with basic Jets installed but also include several different size jets for both gas/air inlets. The original carburetors on the older bikes used Japanese made carburetors for those interested in knowing if they were USA made carburetors, they weren’t.
Excellent video by a competent technician who spoke clearly . Well done to the filming man too . It may have been worth mentioning the emulsion tube as the reason for my '96 Wideglides poor running was the tubes tiny holes were blocked due to the Bike sitting for over a year . Dried un-leaded petrol to blame . Thanks for posting ! .
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Makes it easier to know what parts I need to replace/upgrade when the time comes. Definitely will be purchasing the parts from J&P since you took the time to educate us 😉👍
On these accelerator pumps ,there should be NO gas in the top side where the rod is...If there is gas, there is a no seal condition or breaks in the diaphragm which will cause a puddle of oily cooked gas on the crankcase right up under the carb ...It took me a year to figure that one out.. I was thinking I was getting crankcase breather oil mist blow by the whole time. It ended up being a bad diaphragm in my accelerator pump causing the stain on my crankcase which I can't remove n
I have a cv on my 2001 Buell M2 cyclone. I love it . But from the Buell factory mine came with a idle adjustment cable that works excellent. I'm not sure what part number they used but I recommend everyone get that part. It makes adjustments easy because you can just grab the knob that hangs out just above the top cap on the carb. And just below the gas tank . IT IS SWEET!!! And as for there not quick too respond!! That's bullshit! I have 2 on my Buell and my FXR AND THEY RESPOND LIKE LIGHTNING !! ITS ALL IN HOW YOU SET THEM UP!! MY BIKES ARE SUPER FAST OUT OF THE HOLE AND ALL THE WAY THRU THE GEARS. NO HESITATION EVER!! MY SETUP IS MY OWN SECRET! YOU HAVE KNOW THAT CARB INSIDE AND OUT!
Since it’s a Japanese carb, they use JIS Bolts. They usually strip when people use a Phillips Screwdriver instead of a JIS Screwdriver… from what I personally learned in the past… multiple times
I purchased my first Harley Dyna about 3 years ago, upon opening the carburetor up cuz I was having some issues... I found that the diaphragm was missing along with the spring and that the needle had just been flopping and bouncing around in there, what look like since day one... I was shocked that it actually ran like that.
So I got one of those accelerator pump nozzle upgrades from JP Cycles - the one with the ball and spring. There are zero instructions for installing it. The company that makes it does not respond. JP has no idea about it - so has anyone here ever installed one? If so, what's the procedure? In the reviews on JP Cycle's site someone mentions drilling. That seems like it should be explained somewhere! Nothing came with the kit in terms of instructions. Any help out there?
Great video! Nice to see how the parts actually move with respect to each other, and it's pretty clear where you need good o-rings for proper operation. Thanks!
I have a Vulcan 750. It cost a lot to get running so I started working on it myself. Can’t afford the $175 hr mechanic. After having two carbs “broken” according to the mechanic I’ve started messing with it here and there. I found a cv40 conversion kit online from a German welder. It seems to be a good option for simplifying the carb a little and making the parts cheaper. My issue is I am more a small motor and two stroke mechanic than these carbs. So after getting it on I got it to crank and fire but it will only hit one cylinder and then wait for a full rotation before it will fire again. I’m at 500 elevation and was wondering if there are any tips for me to just get if firing so I can start adjusting from there. What size jet should I use? Ect. I’m going to be playing around with different adjustments next week and see how it tunes out.
This is s really great explanation of how these carbs work!! I used to look at the CVK40 carb on my 2003 Vulcan 1500 Classic and it was completely CHINESE to me as to how it actually operates! Lol. With all it's little holes and passage ways and such! Lol. This video (and a maybe one or two others) really helps you understand much better!! Thank you J&P Cycle for the video!!! : )

when you pull the top cap with diaphragm, spring, and needle off at 7:03 it looks like the white plastic piece inside is upside down. shouldn't it have the "feet" that stick out at the bottom so the spring slides over it?
He probably cleaned it then slapped it back together. Looking at the corrosion on some of the parts that carb probably needed to be soaked and cleaned before he did the video. A lot of people will do this so that you aren't looking at a screwed and filthy carb. Plus none of ths screws he took out were snug they were easily extracted. Idk if you guys have worked with Phillips head screws on a carb before but normally you have to put a good bit of pressure on them in order to get them to break loose without stripping the head off of them.
Well done. My first CV. Question, can I change the petcock to gravity vice vacuum feed? And do I really need the other two vent lines. I see no reason for them. 1999 FXD in MT. Thanks in advance for your input.
If it's leaking from the small overflow hose at the bottom of the carb, it's because the float seat is not sealing. Try a new seat, or float valve or whatever it's called.
Thanks for the breakdown video. ‘96 1200C needs enriched halfway out to run smooth but then when idle at a light or stop the idle is higher than it should be and I want to fix it. I’m guessing gas varnish so needs a good cleaning??? Don’t need high performance just smooth running and good low idle. Do you have the carb rebuild kit for it and what does it cost? I’m in Raleigh/Durham NC. Thanks again for the video.

My needle looks different than the one you showed and my slide is plastic. How would i tell if it's got a thundeslide kit in it? please / thank you
If your needle has different clip positions it is not factory and most likely a dyno-jet needle. All of the thunderslides i have ever seen have been black plastic. Factory or CVP main jet holders (emulsion tube) are a hexagon and have multiple holes along the side, if your main jet holder (emulsion tube) is round and has only one hole per side then its most likely a dynojet emulsion tube. Hope that helps you some.
Great video. Can you tell me where I need to attach the throttle cable vs the idle cable on that wheel? Which cable goes on the front and back if you’re looking at the carb from the air filter side? Thanks
looking at it from air filter side the idle control cable goes closer to you and in the outer position. the throttle control cable goes closer to the bike and in the inner most position. hope that helps. i just toook my carb off and labeled them A and B so i would know where they went back. I can't take the credit. That goes to my Clymer repair manual for that suggestion 😎
I have a 2002 road king. I purchased a CV carb off the internet. The original carb was leaking gas. Not knowing, I didnt pull the jets off the old card. I tried getting the best idle with the new carb, but cant. The airmixture screw turned out more then three turns and need more turning. Can I changeout the pilot jet without touching main jet?
What is the brass plug right next to the mixture plug? The carb bowl wraps around it. I accidently drilled this one out when i was looking for my mixture screw.
Hi great vid. So cleaning my bowl I barely touched the thin brass tube sticking up in the middle of the bowl. It appears to be part of the drain/overflow. Is it a vent tube or a overflow? Just wondering how serious it is. They do not sell these bowls any longer and I have seen some without this tube. I was thinking of soldering it back on instead of buying aftermarket carb. But if it is just a vent for draining then maybe it’s nothing to worry about? Thanks in advance for your time .

So I just purchased a CVP premium tuner kit, also replaced the accelerator pump. I installed everything, however I think I have a small spring leftover about the size of the one that goes on the air/fuel mixture screw but a little smaller. Can you tell me what all gets springs? I put everything back together and the carb doesn't seem to be getting any fuel. It wasn't having any issues before. I put everything back together, turned the fuel back on and tried to start the bike. When i rolled the throttle nothing was coming out of the accelerator pump needle and after taking it back apart there was no fuel in the float bowl. Possible issues?
sounds like the small spring located with the diaphragm that is on the float bowl lid. has 3 screws on it. thats where the fuel goes into the bowl from. without that spring you wouldn't get fuel
I have the same carburetor, but it keeps leaking gas, do you know a solution? Cz i heard that it's from the floater, and you didn't talk about the floater in your video, thank you
Your petcock closes with a diaphragm working correctly if the diaphragm doesn’t see vacuum it will close If the petcock diaphragm won’t hold vacuum it’s bad Try a new petcock You can use a vacuum tool on the fitting on the back of the petcock to check if the diaphragm will hold vacuum
how can I test my choke? 1988 sportster 1200. not an Enrichener on the 1988 I read. I am getting quickly fouled plugs and black smoke from exhaust. Carb is very clean, bike bogs down and dies. how can I know if the choke is functioning properly? maybe it is letting too much fuel in?
A regular choke “chokes” the carb, means it’s restricting air flow. Dark smoke from exhaust means too much gas, reset/check carb on standard settings and check idle mix screw. Simple test for the choke, if pulled rpm should go up.
Yeah I got a question. Looking at my carb (2001 Softail fat boy 88 in) there is a fitting on the fuel line side that looks like a hose goes to it like a vacuum hose but I don't see anything and didn't take anything off of it so should that be plugged or should something be going to it? Thanks.
change the float needle, float valve or whatever it's called. It's not sealing properly and is allowing too much gas to enter the bowl and then it overflows.
Replace that plastic crap fuel inlet ,with the brass one while you have it out ,dont skimp like HD did ,unless one day in the middle of nowhere, it leaks gas onto your hot engine and you
This comments section is funny, half think the carb's American because it's on a Harley. Probably be disgusted to know I'm watching for my '88 Honda Civic...

I've got a 2003 sportster 1200 how do i know what overhaul kit to order
tinkn my ole ironhead needs a CV on it!
🤘😎🤘
Where do I go in order to upgrade my carb?
What kind of carb do you have?
I have the same carburetor, but it keeps leaking gas, do you know a solution? Cz i heard that it's from the floater, and you didn't talk about the floater in your video, thank you
Your petcock closes with a diaphragm working correctly if the diaphragm doesn’t see vacuum it will close
If the petcock diaphragm won’t hold vacuum it’s bad
Try a new petcock
You can use a vacuum tool on the fitting on the back of the petcock to check if the diaphragm will hold vacuum
As always, no one talks about the vacuum ports and vacuum lines
Very nice video thank you
how can I test my choke? 1988 sportster 1200. not an Enrichener on the 1988 I read. I am getting quickly fouled plugs and black smoke from exhaust. Carb is very clean, bike bogs down and dies. how can I know if the choke is functioning properly? maybe it is letting too much fuel in?
A regular choke “chokes” the carb, means it’s restricting air flow. Dark smoke from exhaust means too much gas, reset/check carb on standard settings and check idle mix screw. Simple test for the choke, if pulled rpm should go up.
👍 Good info.
Easy. Great video
Yeah I got a question. Looking at my carb (2001 Softail fat boy 88 in) there is a fitting on the fuel line side that looks like a hose goes to it like a vacuum hose but I don't see anything and didn't take anything off of it so should that be plugged or should something be going to it? Thanks.
That’s the overflow
On the top backside of the carb there is a hose barb sticking out what does it go to??
That is the vacuum line to the petcock.
My cv is leaking fuel when I open the fuel line
I'm having trouble with fuel coming out overflow has happen several times any help
change the float needle, float valve or whatever it's called. It's not sealing properly and is allowing too much gas to enter the bowl and then it overflows.
The. For making the video easy to understand. Yea.for y'all Dominic G. Phx. Az.
Well done
My overflow line constantly leaks all of a sudden. What could be the reason for that ?
Bad float ,or debris obstructing the float bowl needle hole.
Good job!!
Is that fuel line a prebent? Who stocks it?
CV preformance
@@gaknskk thanks
Good video.
Awesomeness 👊🏼
Where does the Over-Flow line go to???
Down to the ground
5:55 i actually thought there was a mosquito coming at me
Replace that plastic crap fuel inlet ,with the brass one while you have it out ,dont skimp like HD did ,unless one day in the middle of nowhere, it leaks gas onto your hot engine and you
Yeah man! I wanna get rid of all my FI and put on carbs...Hate that computer stuff! I mean whatcha gonna do when the power grid shuts off? :)
Very well.
This comments section is funny, half think the carb's American because it's on a Harley. Probably be disgusted to know I'm watching for my '88 Honda Civic...
