Really like how Tom presented this game. With respect for this designer’s dare to differ, to go into a sadness accompanied game experience. Tom carefully tip toes to not reveal much but to give enough so that his feelings came through and evoked something real in my mind to help me understand whether or not this game is something I’d like to experience. Thank you Tom.

Designing a board game is an art.
And like all works of art, not all are created to evoke pleasant feelings.
I've never played this nor This War of Mine but commend the bravery of the designers for taking a risk by providing an experience without providing 'fun' so to speak.
    I hope that makes sense

Fascinating concept, and an awesome review - Tom at his very best.

This was the most memorable game I played at Pax unplugged. I just picked up a copy. I was checking the video out of curiosity to see if I should play through this with the family or with adults only. I think I'll be choosing the later. I think the game concept is fascinating and I can't wait to play through the whole thing. I would agree it is more about the experience than the game, but it's an experience I look forward to. Everything about the game was fascinating and very artistic. even the way you got the memories and you weren't quite sure what order they went in, and how eventually the memories got clearer, and then eventually you knew what order they were in and there was a story to read. It was a very unique experience and one that I'm looking forward to more of.

I like how you appreciated this as a piece of art rather than a fun game to play. I definitely got that vibe from this review and I can Definitely give respect to the artistic design and fairly unique blend of narrative and coop gameplay...but probably wont find myself bringing it to the table that often. But regardless, MUCH Respect to the team that brought a raw narrative and found a creative way to merge it into a boardgame format....i can imagine that wasn't easy to do.
Cheers again for the review mate!

Oh I didn't get that I thought it was getting a meh review because it's not fun in the standard board gaming sense. Would have loved to have heard more about the message it's communicating, like other reviewers are discussing. a personal preference I guess

I would like more games like this as far as heavier, darker (as in sad/tragic), adult themes

I absolutely agree. However in this case I found Holding On not a special or attractive game in its mechanics. The most interesting thing to me was its theme.

thank you Tom, an interesting and helpful review as always. i was intrigued by this game that i saw in another video's top something i guess, but now i'm on the fence about it: i was sold untill you said it's an ok game and now i don't wanna blindly buy it. i have a question though: is it a legacy game? you mentioned there being scenarios and an ending - is it a one shot game like time stories where once you played it you can't go back? what's the replayability of it?

I feel the exact same way about this game. It takes a risk like no other game, but it does have a couple hang ups. Please please play the next scenario whether you win or lose. It teaches you how the game plays. The story and other little mechanics develop as the game moves along.

Looks really good, it seems a good way to live a story with other people in a more involved way than watching a movie.

This seems like it would be well suited to people studying for allied health professions (medical students, nursing students, hospice training, etc.). Sort of like how "Freedom: The Underground Railroad" is great for high school history students. For a game to be compelling but not "fun" in the typical sense may mean that it fits a very particular niche.

I agree with your comparison to Schindler's List. It's one of those films that you can watch once, experience heavy thoughts and feelings, and then never watch again. Ultimately, such a movie is very good and deserves high acclaim. But it is not a feel-good movie to be watched over and over again. Likewise, this game deserves respect, if not a second play through.

Having played it, if you like games that force you to make difficult decisions, challenge you to struggle against odds, and reward you with interesting story then you will like this game.

    My two cents here:
Contrary to what other people seems to be saying: I feel this is one of the weakest reviews by Tom. He barely even touches on how the game didn't work for him (mechanisms-wise) but instead he seems to be constantly excusing himself (possibly as a self-defense mechanism, and understandably so) and/or giving props to the designers for the bold theme (totally agree).
Mechanically, this game reminded me a lot of Pandemic but with an underlying story to follow through. Granted, it's on the easier side but on the other hand it allows you to finish the story and not get stuck in mindless repeats of the same scenario (like TIME Stories do, for instance). It can also get a tad repetitive, as you're basically doing the same over and over again.
Thematically... yes, it's based on reality. And I guess that if taken too seriously some of the themes might land very heavy on some people. But let me tell you something, my group and I were laughing out loud with this game harder than with many, MANY other "regular" games. We pictured ourselves as nosy nurses getting together on the break room to smoke and gossip about poor ol' Billy's life. Insensitive? We found some of the mechanism thematically hilarious, like the fact that you sometimes refuse purposefully to give Billy medical care to just... chat with him. We took it for what it is, A GAME, and had a LOT of fun with it.
All in all, I found this game to be better than average but just short of amazing.

I understand where you come from... And games are of course from one point of view works of art. But in the end... it still supposed to be nothing more nothing less than a game. And an interesting "game" should be imho at the center of a "game" review... Else you could just pick a random painting or sculpture and give it the very the same review / recommendation. Trust me, I don't want to trash or hype a/this particular game, but (again just IMHO) form should still follow function or being more visual: a luxury fancy car without a motor takes you nowhere...

I don't class this as a game. it is too linear and the decisions aren't decision at all. This is a DUD. Wish I had bought something else. It feels like a concept that hasn't been fleshed out enough. I am surprised this even got published its that bad.

Uh oh, i hope board games now don't try to go the route of some video games, which abandoned good game design in favor of story and called it "growing up".

@@TimboCanadaWhen something becomes popular, others will want to copy it, which leaves less resources, or less willingness to spend resources, for what could be produced instead.
Also, i'm passionate about game design, so i like to criticise bad examples.
To be clear, i'm not talking about the game at hand. In fact, i didn't even watch Tom's rules walkthrough.

    • @Fuzzyfoot88
      @Fuzzyfoot88 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Gnarrkhaz Back in the 90's video games were scrutinized because they would eventually make films obsolete. Fast Forward to today and we have a world roaming game every month come out. Not that they don't have story, but the story takes a major backseat to running around an open world. Also I'd argue that games like Uncharted and Last of Us proved that story and gameplay can both be an incredible experience.
