An extraordinary documentary on the brainpower of Daniel T, the young Englishman who could be the world’s greatest mental athlete. Daniel is not just a calculating wizard, but also a memory champion and super linguist.
He speaks nine languages. Daniel, the oldest of seven children, has been able to do amazing calculations after an epileptic fit when he was 3 years old. He was even able to remember over 22,000 numbers in a public display of his ability. But how does he do it? Leading scientists explore the extraordinary world of this real-life Rainman. Daniel’s psychological make-up is explored by Cambridge University autism expert Professor Simon Baron Cohen who delves into his childhood experiences in an effort to explain his remarkable abilities. In America Daniel meets other extraordinary people like himself, known as “savants” -- including Kim Peek, whose story was the basis of the movie “Rainman”. Brain scientists at the Salk Institute in San Diego, including Professor V S Ramachandra, are astounded at his skills and discover the key to Daniel’s ability is his visual imagery which his brain “sees” when he hears a number, this condition is known as synaesthesia. To show it’s not just numbers Daniel can remember -- he also learns one of the world’s hardest languages, Icelandic, in just one week -- and gets interviewed on Icelandic TV after only 7 days of learning to speak it.

I remembered his name before they even told me it.
Both my parents were truly gifted. My mom had an eidetic memory and my father had a photographic memory. My mom could speak 4 languages and could read and write Latin before she learned English at age 19. My father would read books by scrolling his finger down the page on both pages and then my mother would take the book and turn it to a random page and say like page 257 second paragraph…. My father would recite word for word of that paragraph.
My older sister can write ambidextrous, simultaneously, mirror image of anything she hears spontaneously. She too remembers everything she’s ever read.

The incredible thing is that Daniel is able to clearly articulate what he sees, feels and experiences. The fact that he can relate to other people, interact with them and share a joke makes him quite unique. Especially considering his early school years, where he preferred to be alone, immersed in numbers and patterns. As an educator, I find this fascinating. I wonder what he is doing now? I hope life has been good to him.
I bet it had something to do with having a large family. He appears very well adjusted and highly understanding of what drives other people. I'm sure he finds interactions interesting.

My 6 year old grandson is autistic. By age 2 he could count to 100, knew all his colors and many animals. Now he speaks English, Tagalog, Ilonggo and Spanish. Sometimes he uses words from all languages in one sentence. While his social interactions is very limited he has an amazing mind!

To think in another aspect, a lot of them are struggling with not being able to communicate properly. This problem ( or sometimes considered gifts but are very rare) is genetic and if people suffer more than profit from it, scientists should work on how to make their lives better because some of them still want to be normal even it means losing their “gifts”

Our son was doing extensive math at 2. He was diagnosed with Autism at 3. He also did "writing in air." Today he is a Doctor.

My son is 4 years old, he was diagnosed in October 2023, he's autisitc. He's also speech delayed. My boy can count to 100, without having to think which number comes next, he is now going past 100. He can spell over 50 words. The longest being 12 letters. He can write in sentences. Knows all of his colors and can spell them. Once he hears it or sees it, its in his mind and he doesnt forget. I can say a word that i haven't shown and he can spell it correctly. I believe my boy is advanced
I like your story. I just make a suggestion, maybe reconsider using the term gifted for your son. It appears that he's advanced. You've also described him as having delayed development in other areas.

I was fortunate enough to have interviewed Daniel over the phone and he was kind enough to send me a copy of his book "Born On A Blue Day". He is not only unique for his "gifts" but is also a very kind person.

I'm not a wizard with numbers like a mathematician but I am a solver of problems. I was curious about what Daniel might think of a system that could save 10-20% of the world's GNP. It was something of the greatest importance I discovered working an accounting problem 20 years.

No. He’s been outed as a con artist by some people. Don’t get me wrong, this guy is really intelligent and incredibly good at memorizing things, but he’s no savant and he has no superpowers. He uses memorization techniques that can be learned by ‘regular’ people. The world record for most Pi nummers remembered is also held by a ‘regular’ person. If you look into his past he has changed his name before to rebrand himself.

In 1962 at university an Indian woman spoke to us. She could do logarithms and calculations very like this boy in seconds in her head. Amazing.
I've definitely experienced some of the things he's talked about, albeit to a lesser degree. I recall being very young, and when someone would ask me a random math question, instead of consciously thinking, the answer would just come to me-it seemed almost automatic. However, my skills are mainly linguistic, as I am quite adept at learning multiple languages. As of writing this, I've started studying over 50 languages and plan to continue on past 100 eventually.

I love how Daniel is humble and so likeable as a person. He doesn't look down on those who don't share his ability. His excitement over meeting the "real rainman" was touching. Imagine the loneliness of being one-of-a-kind, and now, he meets a fellow who shares the simple understanding of how it feels to be massively gifted in ways marvelous to others.

What surprised me was how tactile, how "touchy-feely" Kim Peek was. In cases of autism, shrinking from physical contact is often an early indicator. Despite Kim's apparent autistic characteristics, he was all over Daniel!
@@speshalkmf9273 it's a real condition. I don't see any reason to refute it. His abilities I wouldn't call impossible or even necessarily difficult to learn but still difficult to do. Most people would probably not take the time to perfect it. Seems he takes his abilities to a bit of an OCD level.

OMG , my 29 years old son is Autistic, he was diagnosed when he was 4 years old , in the school he didn’t interact to much with the others kids, instead he was completely concentrate in trees 🌲, looking at them with such a careful way , and he started to drawing so beautiful, it’s like a photography, and he have a great love for any animals and creatures, and he never has been scared of them. Now he is 29 and he adores me, he doesn’t have friends only his young brother, and he can explain wonderful things about animals and creatures. My only worry it’s when I’m not longer in this world 🌎 😢.

I can relate to this so much! I'm 32 now... But I remember when I was in school I wasn't very social with the other children. I was always alone looking at trees and plants. Also a huge fascination with animals of all kind ... Particularly horses (I love horses)... I have a weird way of remembering places (locations) and people. Like having a map inside my head. I'm terrible with numbers though... But very artistic.... Never been diagnosed autistic but have had teachers think I possibly was. Not sure though.

I remember i had synesthesia as a kid. Every smell had a shape. I remember trying to explain it to my mom and sister and they're reactions were... rude lol. They didnt mean to be but they thought it was very weird, and so i focused on ignoring it and eventually grew out of it. There are a few smells that still have shapes like lemon is arrow shaped, and gasoline is a curve.

My son is not a genius, but he started reading words at age 3 and reading at age 4 on his own. He has never been to a daycare. When he started pre-school, he knew how to read. His teacher is amazed. 😊

Couldn't help but have biblical imagery of Daniel in he Lions Den with some of those people testing Daniel. He is an amazing young man-so kind and well spoken. Whatever his abilities or disabilities, he is wonderful and I would love to be friends with him. His parents did a great job with him because his manners and kindness are spot on! I wish him all the best in the world and much happiness.

They lacked respect because society thought they were weird. Imagine having severe autism in the middle ages, people would think you were crazy even though you might have had an amazing mind that could remember everything.

I was thinking about that, I wonder if that has something to do with being in a large family, growing up with 8 siblings provides much more opportunity for learning from social interactions than if he only had 1 or 2 siblings, and he has the ability to recognize patterns, so he had a chance to learn what made others unhappy

I knew a girl like this that was crazy. I had a huge crush on her and tried asking her out many times but her social skills made it confusing. We were in a band together, her talent was with noise, she said she saw sounds and couldn’t hear them. When you would talk to her she would stare through you and would take 5-10 seconds to respond, she said when you talked she would have to read the words you say in her head, which is why she responded slow. Where it made her insane talented was with instruments, she could pick up literally any instrument, watch someone play it for a few min and then she instantly could play it amazingly. A week of practice on a brand new instrument and she would be at legit professional levels in about a week. And she was so cute too
Wow, that would be such a great talent, imagine what animals she can hear/see the sounds in her head, she would literally be like Dr Dolittle, she would also be able to tell if people were lieing, because they would say things differently and she would pick up on it while looking at the word, it may be slanted, or a different size or colour, she could tell whats wrong with a car by listening to it idle. If she could mimic stuff.....WHOA, thats another can of crazy things she could do, imagine how great your life would be, imagine how horrible it would be. I hope she has good people around her, Go ask her out Mitch, if she says no you can always tell your self she is literally crazy to reject you

My brother is a savant. It's very difficult to describe how a family, my sibling and especially my parents deal with my brother on a daily. The conflict of being proud and amazed coexist with embarrassment and sadness. I give my parents an unconscionable amount of gratitude for hanging in there. My brother Ron is very difficult but if you need to "phone a friend" if you ever find yourself on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, my beautiful brother would never fail you...but don't expect a hug, he will freak out...its the most anti social behavior I've ever witnessed. Hopefully this comment isnt just written off, but.. the only times in my life ive experienced something close to as profound as daniels abilities, as an ordinary person, was after taking psylocibin.. (magic mushrooms), i really REALLY would love to know what could be achieved if someone like Daniel had an experience like this! Only those who have had this experience will understand what im talking about here..

I learned I had Synestia in my late 20s and I cried. I thought everyone experienced the world like this. But it made so much sense because I could now understand the funny looks I got from people and all the times I got in trouble as a child(Mostly for not paying attention). I often got called weird and had a hard time making friends. I often feel like I have something else undiagnosed. But as far as Synesthesia goes, at least my inner world is a little more interesting. Now I only wish I was as good at math as this guy!

My children and myself were blessed to have known him in the library.
I love how Daniel is often the bigger person in a social situation and together with the realization that he is supposed to have social issues is remarkable.
I know some people who have been diagnosed with illnesses that are supposed to lessen their social capabilities, but I think their awareness of this makes them work harder than other people on improving their social capabilities. And also, I agree with you.

Besides his humble attitude he is helping science by undergoing all sorts of tests and examinations, even brain x-ray. The person is on another level in many ways.
I think a thorough CT scan combined high resolution MRI could extract more information from the structure of his brain than an x-ray.

I'm just now realizing i had something similar but to a far lesser degree when i was younger. I could see a math problem written out and almost instantly i could just see the answer in my head. The only down side is i didn't trust myself to have gotten it right so i would always have to go back and manually do the calculation to make sure it was right.
Daniel is an survivor in connection to learning math and reading skills that is wonderful to see and hear about daily.

My husband and I came out of a restaurant very late one night and saw a man hesitating on the curb across a busy road. We drove over to the parking lot of the building, which was an all night dental clinic. The man, Don, was coming out. We took him back in and the dentist said he wanted all his teeth removed, but they were fine. My husband started talking to Don and noticed he talked like Rain Man. It turns out that he was in Columbus Ohio (from Toledo) for the State Special Olympics at the Ohio State University. (My husband saw a card with a number hanging from his neck) He walked off at about 2:30 pm and up the main drag, High Street. We saw him about midnight, maybe 10 miles away from campus. We got in touch with security on campus. They were going frantic. They came up to get him but in a paddy wagon. Don was scared, so my husband went with him. He said during the drive Don could recite all kinds of things about the different stores and businesses he had stopped into on his walk. He asked where we were from. When my husband said I was from near Hershey PA. he said, "Old man Hershey was very anti-Catholic" like everybody knew that. His brother called to thank us for "rescuing" Don. He said Don was a normal kid, going to college and had had a brain aneurysm. I don't know if he could do math or languages, but his memory was amazing!
Division and multiplications are a hallmark of nature. So is communication in all forms. The connection between his brain and nature is almost air tight. Phenomenal!
I would like to tell this young man that I greatly admire his polite and gentle manner. He is the type of person that everyone, would be pleased to call, a friend!

my son was diagnosed as autistic 8 months ago. he is 16 now. since he could talk his memory is beyond belief. if we are going somewhere 200 miles away were we have only been once when he was 4. .... 10 years later he's like a human sat-nav and tells us where the lay-by is and mcdonalds and left / right..... it's scary

Growing up in a house with 9 siblings probably helped Daniel develop adaptation skills.
I've experienced that if I don't "try" too hard to think about things, solutions come very easily, quickly and naturally. I can repeat patterns I've only briefly seen, as long as I just "go for it" instead of actively "trying" to remember it. Basically I have to not give myself time to second guess something that feels akin to an intuition.
But it's super hard to allow that to happen consciously and let that state of mind flow, the moment you control or check your result, it's gone and the mind easily wanders and wants to be in control.
I believe this guy has a natural ability to trust what is subconscious is telling him.
I wish it's something I could figure out how to tap into on demand, it such a useful ability.
I have a 37 yr old son who suffered brain injury the day of his birth. He can remember what we did, what was said, the weather and what we ate out of the blue he will tell s story about a day in the far past and we have a family of 6 and one of us can usually verify a part or two of his recounting. He was challenging in his teens and early 20's. But for about 15 yrs now, he has been an absolute pure joy for his father and I. I wish everyone could know him. He is sweet, funny and complete love. I feel very blessed. I was so attached to the movie Rainman even before we knew he had special abilities. As I get on in age, he is my memory. Because ironically mine is getting worse and worse in the short term. I'm fine with long term. Life is awesome!!!! I;ll always have someone who loves me. Lol 😂
I am a savant too .lack of oxigen at birth I see multiple scenarios and the probability of what could happen.
My baby girl was delivered by emergency c-section three months ago today after being starved of oxygen when I suffered a placental abruption and the hospital and the ambulance service between them left me almost three hours before attending to me. She was born with no heartbeat and all in all took twenty minutes to revive and was still completely unresponsive and suffered seizures on her first day of life. She spent 9 days in intensive care after being on a ventilator and having induced hypothermia treatment to preserve her brain cells.
She seems to be developing well, but cries an awful lot and won't be without me. If she isn't nursing she's screaming for me. There are concerns about high muscle tone which could be a sign of cerebral palsy.
Now it's just a waiting game to find out how much of our daughter is left after her brain injury. While I'd be lying if I said I wasn't still hoping for my little girl to be normal. If she does have lasting brain injury however, I hope whatever has been taken from her, she's been given as much of something else in return like your son. 💚
Thank goodness you guys believe him, I’m married and I can remember being married to the same woman and kids several times, but as for me I can remember at 18 months old climbing on top of a railing on the second floor of a house that was a foster home for me, I actually remember a NDE event happening. My family right now if I told them what happened and how I remember all this they would have me committed. They actually have me on a pill to knock me out at night. I almost remember several past lives, and that scares the crap out of me.

The brain is a strange, magical piece of engineered wonder, that can do things beyond our imagination , that we don't even know yet. Im 57, i couldn't draw a stick man if my life depended on it when i was younger. I wasn't artistic at all. My mom would put my pictures on the fridge backwards. About 20 something years ago, i fell off my mountain bike after crashing into a telephone pole or vice/versa, woke up in the hospital not knowing what happened. Doctors said good thing i had a helmet on or i would of been a lot worse or dead. My helmet had a big crack in it from the crash. Long story short, i started drawing after that. Every where i looked i was seeing the beauty in things and drawing them. I started making things masks, native arts ,wicker,wood,metal my mind was seeing whats inside of these materials and saying make this. Some days its over whelming ,i get so many idea,s in my head it hurts. So all im saying is , was it from the bang on the head or something else, i dont know, but im okay with it. M.

I am also a epileptic , and have been ever since I was born.. something incredibly happened a few times in my life I can't explain. I can have up to 75-160 epoxides or seizures a day.. most think of seizures of someone flopping on the floor, however the epilepsy I have, consist of blank stares, being stripped from reality for around 4-9 seconds not even knowing your alive..."if I don't take my meds"... when this happens something occurs in my brain...activity that science can't explain.. for example one day I had a episode, which is very normal as I have them daily... I asked my wife "why did you say you was giving up on your sister, and she didn't deserve the life she had with her mom. She broke down in tears and said " DID I just say that out loud!?… how did you know I said that!? … I was only thinking that.. how did you hear me say that!!? I Had to of said it out loud"… this experience sent me into another seizure just by the fact that I had somehow heard her thoughts.. it was incredibly.. and has happened around 6 times within the last 15 years...The fact is .. she didn't say it out loud.. somehow as I went into a epileptic spell I was able to channel, and hear her sub conscious, or her thoughts.. my question is... can I harness this? … there is something that happens in the brain when someone has a seizure science can't explain.. there is much more to learn..

Have to admit.. I turned this off at first because I envied Daniel's incredible brain. When I had my first and only manic episode, my brain saw patterns and computed things at a level I have never been able to get back to (nothing close to Daniel of course). I am 85yrs old and watched him on You Tube....everything i could find on him..his voice makes me give full attention to what he is saying.in the last 6 months and as i read ,it was his voice i was hearing as if he was reading to me.Some of his books went over my head and i have tried to re-read.His first book Born on a Blue Day i have read twice .read it in one day!...i am just a average guy but reading is my passion i Daniel to be fascinating..

I have a few Facebook friends who I think of as locked in. Not in a bad way. They are just so good at what they specialize in but seem to lack normal emotional involvement. They block out all divergent thoughts and center so well. One is autistic but high functioning. The other writes constantly on just about everything but becomes upset if challenged by others. I could never be close to either of them but do respect their love of what they are obsessed about. My nephew easily went through pre-med at Rice University but then stopped all college when he realized it would involve interaction with others. Even research takes collaboration. So he now does nothing but what he wants to do. His play with the invisible sword went on into adulthood often using a coat hanger for hours. He would hide under the desk where it was safe he would say. He thought could be very rude and self-centered to anyone he feels is inferior in intelligence. I feel there are a lot who fall into these categories. * Such an interesting young man in the video. He seems to have no defects in other areas of his life.
The way he describes seeing... or experiencing numbers reminds me a LOT of how people with perfect pitch describe experiencing or seeing sounds.
I see sound waves as flowing lines in 2 dimensional axis, if I think about them in regard of pitch.
Most with perfect pitch experiance a degree of synesthesia. LSD can (and frequently does) cause a temporary blending of sensory input effectively making a user a temporary synastat or arguably enhancing a latent existing synasteasia.
When I hear a Note I can repeat the pitch. I just know the frequencies and register octaves, really there's only 7

When I was young, I figured that I was feeling the numbers. I always thought 5 was lonely, 6 and 8 had some sort of a relationship, 9 was mean, 1 was childish, 2 was friendly, 7 was innocent. I liked the prime numbers. They gave me emotions. I never questioned my approach to the numbers since I believe everybody on a certain level has the same thing. People have their favorite or lucky numbers. But this, what Daniel has, is just amazing. He is on a different level, just incredible.

Remember watching this back in 2016 and I was amazed. I had always been a good student but this blew my mind. He's also a very nice person it seems and very sociable.

My first cousin has savant autism and as kid's when we was about four or so I was walking and he was still crawling so I decided to crawled with him until my uncle which is his dad kinda forced him with encouragement to walk. I taught him how to play football,dance,basketball,boxing and ect... but he can do alot of nerve wracking things with ease that it would literally take me awhile to learn especially math. But to finish this long story the last thing that amazed me and my family is that he can sit in a room full of people all day including family and do whatever everyone else is doing even sports and not say a single word unless someone directly speaks to him and he's not mad or doing it purposely but I'm talking all day plus there's only certain people that he feels comfortable talking to that can understand what he's saying and I'm one of them. So this might sound bad to some people but I'm glad that I have an autistic cousin because through it all it shows you there's a reason why certain people can understand them and why it's certain people who they truly love and I'm one of them.✌️
