  • I “Chased and Paced” the Winter Photo Mixed Freight Extra, pulled by the “Coal Burning” K36 #481 to Rockwood, Sunday 2/27/2022.
The consist included 2 box Cars, a “rail loaded” flat, a C&TSRR P-Box (converted box), 3 coaches, a concessions Car, and Caboose 0540. I caught up with the #481 coupling up at the depot and then headed to trout farm to catch the train crossing Main and the 1st Animas River crossing. The sun shining through the smoke made for an interesting Pace up the valley. Additional clips from the water stop and departure at Hermosa, trackside before the underpass, Shalona Crossing and leaving Rockwood. Goose 5 caught up with the train at Rockwood and I caught the departure.

Hello Bob, Fantastic video, very nicely staged the K36. A great sound of the steam engine and the steam whistle. The train is beautiful in the wintry landscape. It was a pleasure to watch. Greetings Wolfgang

great video. I am glad to see that D&SNGRR has kept their word that they would not convert the last Locomotive to an oil burner.

Burning coal, what a rare sight to see. Thanks Bob 👍👍👍👍
I guess there are still a few coal burners left. Great photography Bob, and I really enjoyed watching ‼️‼️‼️‼️

Great job as always, Bob! Thanks for letting me see what I was missing while I was "working" on the Goose! It was a great two days.

I was really looking forward to seeing your video. As usual, you never disappoint us. You take amazing videos. You have a gift of making the viewer feel that they are right there, when they are not. Color, sound and clarity could not be better. You have a true gift. Can't wait to see your next video. Thank you for doing this. Love those steam locomotives!!!

Love the whistle. Though it’s a D&RGW 5-chime, as opposed of a Lima it still sounds like the Polar Express whistle!

Hi SW, I don't follow whistles much so... Thanks for watching and commenting.

Sierra Railway #3 that's the Polar Express whistle, but this one is very close to it. There's also a great Northern 5 chime that sounds exactly like the Lima 5 chime and it sounds so good.

Sounds like it has 478s old 5 chime. Also great to see that 481 still runs coal. Most of the C&TS fleet runs coal as well (even the recently refurbished 488). 481 is also the only K36 on the D&S with its original bell

Oh interesting, I noticed it sounds just like the bells used on the C&TS. The other bells on the D&S all sound different.

Yeah most of the bells on the C&TS are original

I think that whistle once was on K28 478

Coal burners put on a much better "show" than oil burners. They sound different and they produce spectacular smoke and steam.

Sub bituminous coal is actually much cheaper. Why not proportion 85 sub bituminous for 15 bituminous

Better keep this coal burner around! Fuel prices are sky rocketing! Without this locomotive you guys wont be able to run the railroad!
