Those Shays sure are a marvel of engineering and the whistle to pair with em is like the icing on the cake! Beautiful scenery and awesome history! 👍🏻☺️
Shay whistles are my favorite steam whistle sound. next video out will be climbing some steep grades on our ride here. Thank you my friend for the really nice comment and for watching. Did you know that tonight Virtual Railfan introduced a new web cam that shows the depot at Western Maryland Scenic? Pretty cool stuff. I will have to check it out tomorrow when they are running a train.
@@ccrx6700 Thank you. I did not know that about Virtual Railfan. That sounds cool! On a side note, I’m not sure why the donated tank car that was at the Western Maryland Scenic Station is not there anymore.
it sure is a beautiful sound. Shay whistle is my favorite of all steam whistles. They are amazing locomotives. Really appreciate your dropping by and watching the video today my friend.
Nothing sings like a Shay!! And the way it echoes off the hills...😍 We've ridden behind these beauties several times, never gets old. I've been to Lima, and was disappointed that I couldn't really find anything related to the Shay works, just a sign. Thank you for giving me goosebumps with those whistle songs today!!
Awesome comment Jennifer. You share my sentiments exactly on the Shays. I did not know that about Lima, you would thin for the great company they were that there would be something there about them. Next video out will be our climbing up the steep grades at Cass. Really appreciate your visiting with us today my friend. And, I do love that steam whistle sound better than any other one.
The whistles of Cass are the best sounding of anywhere in the world. Can't say if it's the engineers, the mountains, the history, or a combination of all. It's amazing how much the place has changed for the better since I was a kid. More equipment operational, new track opening soon, and how well the spruce trees are returning to the mountain. And yet through all the changes the place has never lost its charm. I can't name any other RR where the crew is as friendly and doesn't mind visitors getting up close and personal with the equipment. Cass is genuine. Its history so deeply embedded that it never feels like some form of commercial enterprise. Rugged, the way it is supposed to be. I've been up the mountain in the rain a few times. Hearing a shay spin it's wheels on wet rail at a 13%grade is a nerve racking experience. Especially when you start sliding downhill.
I think dad and I could say we topped that. Try two Shays slipping on the run even before getting near to Bald Knob and sliding back down. They stopped to allow a Deer to get off the ROW and then had troubles getting started again. Took three tries to get moving on up the mountain. Fall of the year, dew on the track, and leaves on the rails make for slick conditions. But nothing beats the sound of those whistles in the mountains. Dave's train only had one Shay while normal runs back in the 70s- 90s up the mountain had two. But that was back before they relaid all the track and put down ballast.
@@gravelydon7072 Gosh that would be interesting! A Cass double header is a bucket list item, and I've heard they have been frequent this year since 6 is in the shop.
@@mattkinnard6899 Back then WM # 6 wasn't allowed up the mountain. Too much fear that it would roll the rails over. Along came a Hurricane and the flooding took out the line to Durbin that it was used on. So now Cass was isolated. The decision was made to relay the track up the mountain and make the re-connection at Old Spruce to the WM tracks. Which actually at one time were owned by the GC&ER RR which was owned by the lumber company. Now the track from Durbin to Cass should be usable again. So 604 might someday get to run on the old C&O mainline.
@@mattkinnard6899 That would be nice. It is sad they never ran the ex US Army 2-8-0 there as it came out of a base I also moved equipment out of. And all the ALCo MRS-1s that were stored there. If there hadn't been a wreck that required the special FRA flat, an MRS-1 would have been moved out of that base to the local museum. It could not move on its own wheels in interchange as it had hollow axles. And I sure wasn't going to walk it the 1200 miles to get it here. CSX would overlook a number of things for movements but the hollow axles were not one of them. And unlike the ones at Cass, it was built by EMD. Which would have meant I would have had to dig up another manual as mine was for an ALCo built MRS-1.
I must say that whistle is the most beautiful sound I could hear. I recorded it so I can play it tomorrow on the NCR Rail Trail. My wife and I have been doing walks on it and we will cross the Mason/Dixon Line. Along this historical railbed rode our 16th President to Gettysburg in November of 1863 and, sadly in 1865 on his funeral train. Along the rail bed are many cast iron whistle posts and I've always wanted to have a steam whistle recording to use as we passed them. I think I'll catch #1309's whistle and add it to my phone as well. I think it'll sound really cool if I ever ride a bike on the trail. Thanks for sharing your vacation with us.
Awesome John. Shay whistle is my favorite of all steam whistles. Will have videos on us riding behind 1309 coming out in a couple of weeks if you want to wait and use that sound, got lot's of whistle action on those videos from her. Very much appreciate your visiting with me today and watching my friend.
You are so right in that DPeter. Shay whistle is my favorite of all the steam whistles out there. Other's may disagree and like the deep throaty sounds, but I'm like you, Shay sound is awesome. Really appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend. Got another Cass ride video coming out next so hope you will enjoy it also.
What an amazing and unique locomotive! The slip joint that they made in the driveshaft is ingenious... especially for that timeframe. Great video... hope to ride the Cass at some point!
Yes it is amazing Mike. Incredible to me also the engineering to build this way back then. Hope you get down there, I give it a 100% worth the money. Really appreciate your visiting with us today and taking in the show my friend.
I really live the whistles on these old Shays. So much more enjoyable to listen to than today's horns. Another great video. Thanks for sharing on your vacation.
They are my favorite steam whistle sound Gary. That guy running the loco sure did a great job at making the whistle talk. Got some more coming for you in the next video. Really glad you enjoyed and we so appreciate your watching and writing in tonight my friend.
You're right about that MarvUSA. Shay whistle is my favorite of all steam whistles. Really appreciate your tuning in and watching today's home movie my friend.
Steam whistles and Shay geartrains and Heisler engines oh my! One of these times we visit my wife's family in the USA I'll have to visit the Cass Railroad. Such a unique fleet, I could watch the Shay gears all day. Thank you for this film! :)
You will not be sorry for riding this scenic RR 2xKTfc. it is an awesome ride. Next video out will be more of our ride. Really appreciate your visiting with us and watching my friend.
It certainly is, amazing the engineering that it took to build that in the 1880's. They sure can pull a grade. Glad you enjoyed and we certainly appreciate your watching today's home movie my friend.
They had one these locomotive at Eataville for years they ran into hard times and sold it off to another rail road museum thank you for having us along with you and the wife for a view of cass scenic railroad great video thank you
Your certainly welcome Gary. Thank you so much for dropping by and taking in today's home movie my friend. got another video coming out next on climbing some steep grades at Cass, hope to see you there.
LOVE the train whistle! First time I've heard one like that. What my dad once said about trains, was you get speed or you get haul power. And for hills and haul, slow and steady wins it. I do miss my dad. Idk where he picked things up. But he was speaking about a Shea, that it was a different set up for the drive, and that it was fascinating to see. Now I finally, after soo many years, get to see why! LOVE. IT. Thanks for taking us along.
Yep Trena it is a delightful sound, my favorite of all the steam whistles. Your dad would have enjoyed this video and going there. Your dad was certainly right about the choices you get on steam. Really appreciate the great comment and for watching my friend.
Thank you so much Tom, really glad you liked this one. Certainly do appreciate your watching and writing in with the very nice comment my friend. Always a pleasure to hear from you.
Your certainly welcome Robin. it was a great ride, next video out will be of our trip up the mountain. Always a pleasure to have you visit with me my friend. Thank You.
Wonderful! Made my day! Beautiful scenery, loved seeing the old locomotive, and there is just nothing like that mournful whistle sound echoing through those old West Virginia hills. Thank you.
Morning Dave, you have right i love this Video! As i hear the Pipe of the Shay i became Ghoosebombs. She is so beautiful and the Pipsound are very special.
You're right about that Uwe Michael John. Shay whistle is my favorite of all steam whistles. Really appreciate your tuning in and watching today's home movie my friend.
Your welcome John, it was a great ride and a great day, what a wonderful place to visit. Cass takes really good care of their locos here. Very much appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend.
You will not regret your visit there Wilmer, take the Bald Knob run, not the short run to Whitigers Station when you go. Worth every penny of your ticket price. Got another Cass video coming out next. Very much appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend.
Thank you very much James, so glad you enjoyed. We certainly appreciate your checking out the home movie today my friend. They do a superb job at keeping these running here.
Thank you Eddy. Shay whistle is my favorite of all the steam whistle sounds. Got another video on the ride coming out next so hope you will enjoy it also. Really appreciate your checking out the show today my friend.
Shays are awesome. Got another video coming out on the rest of our ride next. We had stopped for water part way up on a 9% grade. it started right up with zero wheel slip, that just amazed me it could do that.
Glad you enjoyed Beverly. Next video out will be our ride up the mountain, so hope to see you there also. Always a pleasure to have you visit with me my friend.
You're right about that Robert. Shay whistle is my favorite of all steam whistles. Really appreciate your tuning in and watching today's home movie my friend.
Absolutely love Cass, great loco walk around. The shay was beautiful and nothing like it's whistle any where. Great coverage Dave, can't wait tor part 2 now... so glad you 2 had a great day...
Thank you so much Pappy for the awesome comment. That is my favorite whistle sound and this guy could really make it talk. 1309 was deep and throaty and exuded power, but the Shay was beautiful, at least in my opinion. Always a pleasure to have you visit with us my good friend.
I haven't been there in a while, but I've been going there since something like 1978 or so. Back in the early 2000's my dad and I took a car load of brass and bronze castings from Vandergrift PA down to Cass as they were rebuilding #9 Climax. Saved them a couple hundred in shipping costs, and got to ride up in the cab of #7 and #11 shay. It was a good day! I really need to make another trip now that they aren't land locked anymore!
It certainly is declan. Shay steam whistle is my favorite of all steam whistle sounds. Delightful Really appreciate your tuning in and watching the home movie today my friend.
Looking forward to the rest of the vacation series! 1309 is quite the locomotive, was there for its first photo charter and then behind it for a fall leaf trip. So glad that it was finally restored after all the setbacks and delays, kudos to WMSR for sticking with it. As others have said, Cass is a place like no other, the sights, the sounds, the history. So lucky that it and the locomotives and rolling stock survives today. Unaware of the 13%-15% grades, I had heard 11% max, but it’s even steeper than I thought. And the pic of your son on the open top car was so awesome. We tried to ride that one when we’d take our many family trips to Cass when I was a kid kid, always such fond memories. Hopefully big 6 will return to the high rails next year, quite a size difference between it and the other shays. Cass also had the largest Shay that ever existed, it was the companion to big 6 (6 was built from its plans) and converted to a 4 truck Shay at Cass with Lima’s help (sadly scrapped in the 50’s). The milk car still has the tanks I believe and an idea was to use it for water for longer excursions, though the connector rail from Cass to Elkins is graded for diesels (though big 6 has been to Elkins for a photo charter). Moore Keppel climax #3 was the former Durbin rocket power, I believe it is under a tarp there along the siding. Hopefully it will be restored sometime too and Climax 9 and Climax 3 can be reunited.
Thanks so much for the very informative comment Jonathan. Awesome info! Gonna have videos on riding behind 1309 out soon, it was great. Cass is great. Really appreciate your visiting with us and for taking the time to write in my friend.
Very nice video Dave. loved that whistle. A very close friend of mine chartered a caboose (I believe it was on the Case) that took them out somewhere on the line and dropped the caboose on a siding and picked them up the next day. He really enjoyed that trip.
Thank you Jim for the very nice comment. I've heard of that trip before, not sure where it's at tho where they drop you off for a night in a caboose. That would be fun. Really appreciate your taking the time today to watch and write in my friend.
Awwwwwwwww, yeahhhhhhhhhhh!, that engineer sure knows how to play that whistle!............and that echo!, way, way beyond awesome!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍👍😀😀😀😀❗❗You should ask if Cumberland could borrow it for a week or two!!
Guessing you kinda liked the video tonight Paul? LOL That guy sure could make that whistle talk. Shay whistle my favorite, although I know many others may disagree, but that's okay. I love the PRR but their Banshee whistles, that sound leaves me something to be desired. Got another vid coming out on our ride for you. Always a pleasure to have you visit with me my friend. I agree, we need steam on Cumberland, now how awesome would that be.
@@ccrx6700 yes!, i definitely enjoyed the presentation! That Shay whistle would be a great replacement for those PRR banshees, no doubt about it! There are others that i like also, the Reading Hooter (on 2102), would be tied with the Shay whistle in my book. Yes, it would be cool to see steam on the Cumberland, but a connecting line to the nearest major road would be necessary. My cat is curled up next to me, acting silly as well, i think he might be a little jealous, because my new lady friend takes care of a bunch of cats! 😾❗
Really glad you liked the show today EJ. We certainly appreciate your tuning in and watching my friend. next video out will be our ride up the mountain.
Your welcome Ralph, glad you enjoyed. I just learned this: our neighbor mine, Baily, was approached a few months ago by a UK broker who told Baily, UK would pay $600 a ton to have them ship coal over there. Baily went to their domestic customers and told them, they would actually pay the customers $50 a ton if they didn't buy it so they could ship the coal to UK!!! I haven't heard if any customers have agreed or not tho. We have a wood pellet manufacturer 4 miles from our house, their pellet inventory is the lowest going into a winter I have ever seen it. Seems like pellet stove owners are switching from coal to wood. We have had a wood pellet stove for over 20 years and while it doesn't put out the heat a coal stove does, it still does a decent job.
@@dezertraider you got that right. Thank you margaret thatcher who created this coal shortage cause she got upset when the UK miners went on strike. Now we paying for her stupidity.
@@dezertraider baily is doing big things. They just bought a block of coal from us. Also they are in the works of building a zero emissions electric generation power plant which will use coal fines in slurry ponds for fuel and pump emissions underground into storage areas in their mine. All DEP approved.
Sounds of those whistles! I'm goose-bumpy all over...happens every time I hear them. Got lots of geared locos out here in the PNW, practically every type ever made.
Thank you so much mustraline for the very nice comment. That whistle sound is my favorite of all steam whistles. Very much appreciate your visiting with me and for writing in my friend.
13º to 15º grade! There are 15 percent grades around here on our roads, but those are closed in the winter because they are so dangerous! I can't imagine a train going up something that steep! Awesome locomotives and rolling stock, thanks for taking us along Dave 😊
Wow! 15%! We did travel on some 9% grades on our trip to WV, but I can't imagine 15. Really appreciate your checking the video out today my friend. Watching Manhole Culvert Pipe video as we speak.
@@ccrx6700 From our house down to the bottom of the hill is a 11. Most are between 8 and 12, and 15 is the steepest I've seen in this area. When we drove through the mountains to South Carolina during the pandemic, we were amazed at how gradual the grades are. Some of the roads here have you feeling like your car is going to tip over backwards!
Your welcome Valerie. Glad you like the Shays, they are awesome. Got another video of them coming out next on climbing some steep grades. Always good to hear from you my friend.
What a journey and thank you for the ride along. Don’t get to see many steam trains but we have steam powers of the past and Darke County steam thrashers in western Ohio . Steam tractors. Greenville Ohio come visit us sometime.

That whistle is like none other!..AWESOME! Thanks for showing the Shay up close. Very interesting seeing the gear drive. Looking forward to the next installment! Fantastic video Dave! 👍👍
I remember when I was a kid, my grandpa had some memorabilia from Cass, he had various train items and pictures. I always wanted to go there! I was born in Charleston and we lived near Gauley Bridge so I saw trains go right by our house, within a few feet actually, almost every day. Great videos ! Just subscribed!

What a great video Dave. I really do love the sound of the train whistle. It reminds me of my grandfather and his collection of train sounds on old vinyl records. Have a great day my friend.
Thank you very much Lewis. Glad you enjoyed. Train sounds on record, wondering if those were produced by Bradley Miller? He did some awesome work capturing the sounds of steam on the Southern Pacific. I am good friends with his brother who sent me all of Brad's recordings. I will be most interested to know if those recordings your grandfather has were done by him. His brother Bob worked for SP for awhile as a brakeman. Please try to find out if you can if Brad made those or not and let me know, Bob would be very interested to find that out.
Very cool video Dave thanks for sharing it with us. I sure like listening to all of your knowledge on these locomotives and train-related stuff. I'm always looking forward to another one of your videos.
Awesome comment William. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and write in today. We do appreciate all your wonderful support of the channel my friend.
It is an amazing engine for sure Jenny, field trip in order for you guys on this one? it certainly is worth the visit. Always a pleasure to have you join in with us and watch my friend.
That is a great ride Wayne, track crew got their work cut out for them on those steep grades! Very much appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and write in my friend.
Hi Dave, Great video. But one small niggle. Lima made some magnificent large locomotives, including the NicklePlate berkshires and Wheeling articulateds. Those Berks used to run down the hill from my parents house in northern Ohio. Great memories. Thanks.
Thank you Keith, glad you enjoyed. You are right about that. I had forgotten about the Berkshires and the Allegheny locos they made. Both of those were very fine engines, very well made and ran well. Appreciate your reminding me and for watching today my friend. We saw the Allegheny at B&O Museum in 2019, it is awesome and kept under roof.
Thank you Jeff, glad you enjoyed. Cass is a great ride, you will see more of the ride in the next video coming out. If you get the opportunity, then go there, it is well worth the money. Really appreciate your visiting with me today and watching my friend.
When I was there I spotted some 1905 Cambria Iron Co 100RB rails at the main depot. Also saw some 1920s tie plates from Wheeling Steel & Weirton Steel.
Nice Stephen, wish I had found those, I love old rail. Thank you very much for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Awesome video! There is a Climax locomotive at Clark's Trading Post in NH. I went on the train ride there. Great ride, and even more so seeing the locomotive!
Cool! they are pretty neat engines commonsense. They had one here at nearby Durbin it was under steam when I visited but was just sitting there. These Shay's are incredible how they can climb a grade.
Really glad you got to ride it Rick. Nothing bad about that trip. Got another one coming out on more of the ride. Always great to have you pay me a visit and watch my friend.
Yep Christopher, that is a most delightful sound. Shay whistle is my favorite steam whistle. Very much appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend.
Thank you very much Richard, very glad you enjoyed. I'm working on developing a "scratch and sniff" video as we speak.... LOL Appreciate your checking out the show today my friend.
I was in Cass just a few weeks ago. If you get the chance to go and haven't been take that chance it is absolutely stunning going up the mountain. And if you're worried about price being too much it's worth every single cent, without a doubt.
I certainly could not agree with you more Flying Villager. Ride and sights are worth every cent. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and write in today my friend.
Wow Wilbur that's really great to hear. So glad you enjoyed. Got another one on Cass coming out. That guy running the engine could sure make that whistle talk. It's my favorite whistle sound. Always a pleasure to have you join in with us and watch my friend.
I rode one similar in Kane PA. It crossed the highest wooden and metal rail road bridge in the country I was 12 y.o. but a tornado came through which was really rare in the mountains.....and blew it over.....now there is just a pile of twisted metal and wood and now they have a part of the bridge with a glass bottom you can walk out where the train used to go and stand on a glass floor and look 300 ft down it's really cool. Ty sir for bringing back such fond memories from my childhood. Ty so much
We visited the Kinzu bridge way back when I was a kid Michael, don't remember much about it other than standing on the end of the bridge. I sure don't think they had a glass floor back then, trip was probably in the early 1960's. Thanks for writing in and for watching the video today my friend.
it is a beautiful sound Bill. A big part of the romanticism of steam was their whistle sounds. Cass is a wonderful ride, you would enjoy it. Really glad you enjoyed Eric. Would be a great honeymoon trip for you and JD lady.... :-) Our first trip there we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, stayed at one of the logging town houses there. it actually is my favorite steam whistle sound Daniel. I know many others would find different, but for me it's tops. Really appreciate your stopping by and checking out the video tonight my friend.
The steam whistle on the Shay is my favorite Derrick. Half of the romanticism of steam trains were their whistle sounds. Always is a pleasure to have you join in with us and write in my friend.

Very glad you enjoyed Baron3D. Got another Cass video coming out next on our ride up the mountain. Hope you will watch it also. Really appreciate the nice comment and for visiting with us my friend.
Love that whistle too Dave Thanks for showing the Shay close up details. I like how the drive shafts work on these with them having to power trucks that turn a really neat solution. I doubt I will get to see one in real but know a guy who builds logging layouts and he runs them at shows. Those cranks must of been really flying at 18mph bet that was a sight. In the war some locos were built for us by Lima and one is not far from where I am. It has that same whistle.
For sure cedarcam, that whistle sound is my favorite of all steam whistles. It is delightful. Please when you get a chance do a video of your Lima. I would love to see that! If you already have one, send me the link. And, if you do make a future video of it and you don't hear from me, please let me know because You Tube does not always send me notifications of new videos out even tho I have the get notified bell hit, that happens on several of the channels I'm subbed to. what is unique you can tell who is sounding the whistle they have a unique hand in how they sound the whistle duration , and inflection between. when the CSX crews come in on site there are 2 grade crossings you can tell the difference between the crews, it is so neat hearing the difference. great video thanks for sharing
It is a delightful sound for sure Barry. My favorite steam whistle sound. Yes sir, engineers have their own unique ways of sounding horns and whistles, pretty awesome stuff. Really appreciate your dropping by and watching my friend.

Great picture of you and your boy Dave! You are in great shape now but you looked like you could’ve handled just about anything or anybody back then man!
Thanks Paul for the very nice comment. Glad you enjoyed. Used to bale hay which kept me in pretty good shape, but that was 25 years ago.... Really appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend.
It's one of the best sounding steam whistles out there, at least in my opinion, I'm sure others may disagree with that, but even still, what's not to love about that sound.

What a beutiful logging loco, and a beutiful whistle. Speaking of Lima-built locos there are some fantastic engines here in michigan at greenfield village, I suggest you see them if your ever in The area.
Thanks Arkay for tuning in tonight and watching. Retirement bucket list is a trip to Michigan. We were there when I was young, toured Kelloges, River Rouge plant, Greenfield Village and of course Henry Ford Museum. I want to go back see HF Museum so let me know where I can find the engines you are speaking of.

@@gravelydon7072 my understanding is that a grant from the state of WV was obtained to build a new boiler for 604.
Will have videos on us riding behind 1309 coming out in
a couple of weeks if you want to wait and use that sound, got
lot's of whistle action on those videos from her. Very much
appreciate your visiting with me today and watching my friend.
That driver plays the whistle very well..... Sets my hair on end and sends a shiver through me. Thanks Dave!!
You are so right in that DPeter. Shay whistle is my favorite of
all the steam whistles out there. Other's may disagree and
like the deep throaty sounds, but I'm like you, Shay sound is
awesome. Really appreciate your watching and writing in
today my friend. Got another Cass ride video coming out
next so hope you will enjoy it also.
Now that's what a train whistle is suppose to sound like. Good memories from my childhood.
Yes sir! Shay whistle is my favorite of all steam whistles.
Glad you enjoyed the video and we thank you so much for
joining with us today my friend.
What an amazing and unique locomotive! The slip joint that they made in the driveshaft is ingenious... especially for that timeframe. Great video... hope to ride the Cass at some point!
Yes it is amazing Mike. Incredible to me also the engineering
to build this way back then. Hope you get down there, I give
it a 100% worth the money. Really appreciate your visiting with
us today and taking in the show my friend.
I really live the whistles on these old Shays. So much more enjoyable to listen to than today's horns. Another great video. Thanks for sharing on your vacation.
They are my favorite steam whistle sound Gary. That guy
running the loco sure did a great job at making the whistle talk.
Got some more coming for you in the next video. Really glad
you enjoyed and we so appreciate your watching and writing
in tonight my friend.

Those old steam whistles........don't get any better. Gotta Love it for sure !!
You're right about that MarvUSA. Shay whistle is my favorite of
all steam whistles. Really appreciate your tuning in and watching
today's home movie my friend.
Steam whistles and Shay geartrains and Heisler engines oh my! One of these times we visit my wife's family in the USA I'll have to visit the Cass Railroad. Such a unique fleet, I could watch the Shay gears all day. Thank you for this film! :)
You will not be sorry for riding this scenic RR 2xKTfc. it is an
awesome ride. Next video out will be more of our ride. Really
appreciate your visiting with us and watching my friend.
What a unique drive system on those Shay's! Great catch, Dave. Thanks, mate! 👍😎👍
It certainly is, amazing the engineering that it took to build
that in the 1880's. They sure can pull a grade. Glad you enjoyed
and we certainly appreciate your watching today's home
movie my friend.
They had one these locomotive at Eataville for years they ran into hard times and sold it off to another rail road museum thank you for having us along with you and the wife for a view of cass scenic railroad great video thank you
Your certainly welcome Gary. Thank you so much for dropping
by and taking in today's home movie my friend. got another
video coming out next on climbing some steep grades at Cass,
hope to see you there.
You guys certainly know how to enjoy yourselves thanks for the ride Dave.
Thank you, very glad you enjoyed. We really appreciate your
riding along with us today my friend. Cass is awesome.
Yep Trena it is a delightful sound, my favorite of all the steam
whistles. Your dad would have enjoyed this video and going there.
Your dad was certainly right about the choices you get on steam.
Really appreciate the great comment and for watching my
friend.
Dave, AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!! Thanks so much.
Thank you so much Tom, really glad you liked this one.

to have you visit with me my friend. Thank You.

Really appreciate your tuning in and watching

Thanks Dave for takin me a long. Nice to see the old loco running.
Your welcome John, it was a great ride and a great day, what
a wonderful place to visit. Cass takes really good care of their
locos here. Very much appreciate your watching and writing in

Love this,Cass is definitely on my bucket list. 2023 may be the year. Thanks so much for sharing......Wilmer
You will not regret your visit there Wilmer, take the Bald Knob
run, not the short run to Whitigers Station when you go. Worth
every penny of your ticket price. Got another Cass video coming

Hi Dave, great video! The Shay is a beauty, wonderful they're keeping her alive! Stay safe!

Best whistle ever! And an amazing locomotive.
Shays are awesome. Got another video coming out on
the rest of our ride next. We had stopped for water part way
up on a 9% grade. it started right up with zero wheel slip,
that just amazed me it could do that.
What a great train ride. Thanks for the history of the locomotives and for letting me ride along.
Glad you enjoyed Beverly. Next video out will be our ride up

to have you visit with me my friend.
Gotta love the whistle of the old trains.
You're right about that Robert. Shay whistle is my favorite of

today's home movie my friend.
Absolutely love Cass, great loco walk around. The shay was beautiful and nothing like it's whistle any where. Great coverage Dave, can't wait tor part 2 now... so glad you 2 had a great day...
Thank you so much Pappy for the awesome comment. That
is my favorite whistle sound and this guy could really make
it talk. 1309 was deep and throaty and exuded power, but
the Shay was beautiful, at least in my opinion. Always a
pleasure to have you visit with us my good friend.
What an awesome sound echoing down that valley.
Cool stuff 👍👍👍
It certainly is declan. Shay steam whistle is my favorite of
all steam whistle sounds. Delightful Really appreciate your
tuning in and watching the home movie today my friend.
Gonna have videos on riding behind 1309 out
soon, it was great. Cass is great. Really appreciate your
visiting with us and for taking the time to write in my friend.
I've heard of that
trip before, not sure where it's at tho where they drop you
off for a night in a caboose. That would be fun. Really appreciate
your taking the time today to watch and write in my friend.
LOL That
guy sure could make that whistle talk. Shay whistle my favorite,
although I know many others may disagree, but that's okay. I
love the PRR but their Banshee whistles, that sound leaves me something to be desired.
Got another vid coming out on our ride for you. Always a pleasure
to have you visit with me my friend. I agree, we need steam
on Cumberland, now how awesome would that be.

your tuning in and watching my friend. next video out will be
our ride up the mountain.
THANK YOU DAVID,,THAT SHAY DRIVE IS AMAZING!HAVE FUN....SAFE TRAVELS,,,,,BTW ,STILL NO COAL IN MAINE!
Your welcome Ralph, glad you enjoyed. I just learned this:
our neighbor mine, Baily, was approached a few months
ago by a UK broker who told Baily, UK would pay $600 a ton
to have them ship coal over there. Baily went to their domestic
customers and told them, they would actually pay the customers
$50 a ton if they didn't buy it so they could ship the coal to
UK!!! I haven't heard if any customers have agreed or not tho.
We have a wood pellet manufacturer 4 miles from our house,
their pellet inventory is the lowest going into a winter I have
ever seen it. Seems like pellet stove owners are switching from
coal to wood. We have had a wood pellet stove for over 20
years and while it doesn't put out the heat a coal stove does,
it still does a decent job.
@@ccrx6700 WOW,THANK YOU,,ITS CRAZY THEY CLOSED THE MINES IN THE UK YEARS AGO AND PUT HUNDREDS OUT OF WORK...STAY WELL
@@ccrx6700 WOW,JUST FOUND A BAILEY COAL MINE YT VIDEO..WOW,THANK YOU ALL THAT DIG COAL..
@@dezertraider you got that right. Thank you margaret thatcher who created this coal shortage cause she got upset when the UK miners went on strike. Now we paying for her stupidity.

Sounds of those whistles! I'm goose-bumpy all over...happens every time I hear them. Got lots of geared locos out here in the PNW, practically every type ever made.

I wondered why these were different than the other loco's, now I know, thanks Dave.
Your very welcome Johnny, they are a very unique design, but
man can they climb a steep grade, very impressive but slow.
13º to 15º grade! There are 15 percent grades around here on our roads, but those are closed in the winter because they are so dangerous! I can't imagine a train going up something that steep! Awesome locomotives and rolling stock, thanks for taking us along Dave 😊
Wow! 15%! We did travel on some 9% grades on our trip to
WV, but I can't imagine 15. Really appreciate your checking the
video out today my friend. Watching Manhole Culvert Pipe video
as we speak.
Thank you Mr. Dave! The shay locomotive is my favorite trains. 😍

What a great video Dave. I really do love the sound of the train whistle. It reminds me of my grandfather and his collection of train sounds on old vinyl records. Have a great day my friend.
Thank you very much Lewis. Glad you enjoyed. Train sounds on

He did some awesome work capturing the sounds of steam

to know if those recordings your grandfather has were done
by him. His brother Bob worked for SP for awhile as a brakeman.

I had
forgotten about the Berkshires and the Allegheny locos they
made. Both of those were very fine engines, very well made
and ran well. Appreciate your reminding me and for watching
today my friend. We saw the Allegheny at B&O Museum in 2019,
it is awesome and kept under roof.

Thank you for another great ride Dave! You must have enjoyed finding someone to talk railroading with! Your wife must be quite an enthusiast too!
Your welcome Raymond. Wife is pretty cool about indulging
me on my RR vacations. Always a pleasure to have you join
us and write in my friend. Thank you so much.
Great sight and sound!
Really glad you enjoyed the show Ben. Thank you so much
for stopping by and watching my good man.
This was extra awesome. Thanks.
Very glad you enjoyed Baron3D. Got another Cass video coming
out next on our ride up the mountain. Hope you will watch it also.
Really appreciate the nice comment and for visiting with us
my friend.
Awesome whistle Dave. 🚂🚂🚂
It is my favorite steam whistle Tom. Really appreciate your
visiting with us and writing in my friend.
For sure cedarcam, that whistle sound is my favorite of all
steam whistles. It is delightful. Please when you get a chance
do a video of your Lima. I would love to see that! If you
already have one, send me the link. And, if you do make a future
video of it and you don't hear from me, please let me know because
You Tube does not always send me notifications of new videos
out even tho I have the get notified bell hit, that happens on
several of the channels I'm subbed to. Always is a pleasure
to have you visit and write in my friend.
@@ccrx6700 If the Lima is running next time I go I will try and get some more if it. Here are a couple of bits showing it First at the end of the line. and the other when we visited the depot. If you watch the first one from the start ignore the warning at the beginning. TH-cam got fine a huge amount over COPPA regulations and instead of sorting their mess blamed the video uploaders. Now I just added a note in my description instead. th-cam.com/video/tMtDZ3HS2OY/w-d-xo.html at 22:48 th-cam.com/video/6kcgEiV1FuA/w-d-xo.html at 54:22. Like you I do not always get a note or email when someone posts, another thing youtube never seem to get sorted.
I have pictures of a Shay up in Oregon or Washington. Motorcycle trip in the '90s sometime.
I do believe #2 came from Vancouver area jw. Thanks for
tuning in and watching the video today my friend.
what is unique you can tell who is sounding the whistle they have a unique
hand in how they sound the whistle duration , and inflection between.
when the CSX crews come in on site there are 2 grade crossings
you can tell the difference between the crews, it is so neat hearing
the difference. great video thanks for sharing
It is a delightful sound for sure Barry. My favorite steam
whistle sound. Yes sir, engineers have their own unique
ways of sounding horns and whistles, pretty awesome stuff.
Really appreciate your dropping by and watching my friend.
Love that old whistle! Nice video Dave! Looks like a very fun day.
Me too Rick. Shay whistle is my favorite of
all steam whistles. Really appreciate your tuning in and watching
today's home movie my friend. it was a good day and next
video coming out will be our ride up the mountain. it was a
great ride and fun day.
Agreed, I love the sound of steam whistle
Great, gonna have a video out sometime this spring that is
all about the steam whistle sounds of WV.
I too rode behind the number 2 Shay locomotive. 🚂😊
She just keeps on climbing grade. They do a remarkable job
of maintaining those Shays. Really appreciate your tuning
in and watching the video today my friend. Hope you will watch

Great picture of you and your boy Dave! You are in great shape now but you looked like you could’ve handled just about anything or anybody back then man!
Thanks Paul for the very nice comment. Glad you enjoyed.
Used to bale hay which kept me in pretty good shape, but that
was 25 years ago.... Really appreciate your watching and writing in
today my friend.
Love all the Belching from the Engine, feeding all the plants so we get to breathe Oxygen !
Really appreciate your visiting with me tonight my friend. Smoke
out of those Shay stacks is really cool to watch!
I like that horn, better than the ones nowadays days.
It's one of the best sounding steam whistles out there, at least
in my opinion, I'm sure others may disagree with that, but
even still, what's not to love about that sound.
Great footage Dave
Thank you Mike for the very nice comment. Glad you enjoyed.
Got another Cass coming out on our ride up the mountain.
Really appreciate your visiting with us today my friend.

Nice.Greetings from Italy.
Thank you Mickey, glad you enjoyed. We do appreciate your
coming all the way from Italy to watch my good neighbor.
What a beutiful logging loco, and a beutiful whistle. Speaking of Lima-built locos there are some fantastic engines here in michigan at greenfield village, I suggest you see them if your ever in The area.
Thanks Arkay for tuning in tonight and watching. Retirement
bucket list is a trip to Michigan. We were there when I was young,
toured Kelloges, River Rouge plant, Greenfield Village and of
course Henry Ford Museum. I want to go back see HF Museum
so let me know where I can find the engines you are speaking of.
Nice visit
It is a great ride gunsaway1. Glad you enjoyed and we certainly
appreciate your dropping by today and watching my friend.
That was absolutely great Dave, I need to get there sometime!
Thank you Dave for your very nice comment. So glad you
