Hi, I don't think that you can attach a spring to the cylinder. This is not going to allow you to answer the question and find the relationships asked for. In this case the oil is the 'spring'. All that needs to be done is the cylinder displaced , either upwards or downwards and then measure the period.
you are right, adding a spring can make it more complex. but since the spring constant is same, it hardly affects the period's relationship infact, it can help you keep the cylinder from touching the walls of container.
