Your videos are so delightful. I'm a Wellingtonian, and kiwis love nothing more than to hear praise of our country. The best thing about your videos is you explore and get into the detail of what the small and big towns or cities are about. You appreciate everything, thanks for staying here and spreading the joy.
Those aren't mountains, they're hills! Is it covered in plants? That's a hill. (Our perception of what counts as a mountain in NZ is a bit different to other places)😅
@@erongmusku9475 The naming of the two heights you mention of course was done by the early settlers in the mid 19th century, where of course people from Britain just getting off a boat preceieved them as high peaks by British standards. No quite right. Bulk of bigger building you see in old photos are Edwardian or later (1900 is the division year, Victorian is prior to this) as there was bit of building boom in the downtown are after 1900, partly due to the public service getting expanded due NZ govt changing, Wellington being capital. Did you ever freedom camp in Evans Bay? I've done so many times. It has fresh water, toilets, black waste dump station ( that which you don't need )🌞 Some great walks all around it. Wellington isn't windy anymore. True ! They're not half what they used to be. On Stewart Dawson's Crn and Willis Street I was on the site where the bank was next to the fruit shop and jewellers. We had to pull the original sea wall out to enable us to do the drains etc. Man that seawall was tough. Anyway down the side of the fruit shop was a skinny pathway that ran toward between the back of the shop and the bank. No one would have ever noticed it. It led to a little door and then another before it opened up into a hidden bathhouse with a pool and bamboo partitioned side room's. There was another door that had been transformed into the artwork and almost invisible that led into the back of the fruit shop. Ha ha we found a secret knock shop, maybe someone out there has heard of it or even had a massage or a pedicure 😂

What luck with the weather though. I've been to Wellington about 10x in the past 10 years and the only time it was sunny we had an outbound flight to Australia with 100km/h wind gusts.
The statue you asked "who is this guy" was John Plimmer the father of Wellington. Meant to have been the first person to dump a wheelbarrow of dirt into the Harbour to begin reclaiming the land where the CBD now sits.
You e managed to make wellington look really appealing. One of very few good days we have. You got very lucky. The free store has food that businesses don’t sell during the day and they distribute it for free to people.

Seriously though, I‘ve spent 11 years of my eventful life living in Wellington (Pōneke in Maori language) 3 years at Victora University of Wellington 1972 to 1974. Halcyon days. Then 8 more working in government - 1979 to 1987 Loved it.
That would be bacause all those bungalows and Colonial houses were sent as kitsets from The U.S. people could look at a catalouge and choose what they wanted, order it and it would turn up by Ship months later.
@@michaelgrey7854 You're right they were mass produced kitsets from some US designs (though the term and idea of Bungalows is from British colonial housing in India from the late 18th century) but its myth that they were materially sourced from the USA. NZ has had a large timber industry for its entire history plus was part of the British imperial trade system. So if you restore a house put up in the period you find its mostly made of NZ native timbers (Rimu, Matai etc) or NZ grown plantation pine (which were hybrids of North American pines, but developed here in NZ) which were being developed from the 1920s onwards. They weren't importing large amounts of timber from the US to build houses as it wasn't as good quality or cost effective (the cost shipping round NZ being significantly cheaper at the time than from the other side of the Pacific) , plus generally there were tariffs and import restrictions on US timber. You more likely to find Australian wood in NZ buildings, it being part of the Empire trading block, than American. What's happened were the bungalows were made in NZ under a license from the original US based designers, but almost all supplied by NZ based timber merchants from NZ timber sawmills from NZ grown trees.
I lived and worked in Wellington for 30 years (1985-2015) before heading to Moscow then San Francisco for a few years each for a bit of an OE. Parking is a big problem and I always went into the city by motorcycle, which makes it far easier -- you can always find somewhere to park for free. It's a pretty nice city. Not as hot as Auckland, but more sun, less rain. I can't believe walking all over the city looking for a coffee -- there must be a cafe every 100 m, and they're all good.
Im a southlander ,,south island is best ,head to the west coast if you like isolation if you wish to stroll a beach & be the only person on it ,,it feels amazing it feels like you own it ,but be warned now take some sand fly repellent & lots of it extra strength heavy duty stuff .The sand flies can easily drive a person insane it happened to me .
You saying it's busy when Lambton Quay is effectively empty for anyone used to the area. 🤣 Anyways, it's always good to see your home through the eyes of someone new. Otherwise you end up only seeing the bad. Cheers for the good reminder that Wellington has a lot of good stuff going for it. :)

you cant beat Wellington on a windless day - glad you enjoyed the mighty Nakl
shes a beauty!
It's nice at least someone likes Wellington.
Someone doesn't like wellytown???
welcoome to New Zealand, hope you like it, you guys should go to Hawera tans and try their butterchicken, its so good
Don't forget to visit Old St Paul Church opposite Parliament, a Beautiful wooden building.
Hell no
You guys are hilarious... its like the blind leading the blind and just making it up as you go. At least you got the origins of Cuba street correct. :-) even if you didnt realize it starts at wakefeild st.
Very kind words☺️ that’s the whole idea it was our first impression and we just go with the flow and explore the city
The greatest city in New Zealand and my home
What luck with the weather though. I've been to Wellington about 10x in the past 10 years and the only time it was sunny we had an outbound flight to Australia with 100km/h wind gusts.
Damn that sounds painful maybe the 11th time you may get lucky! 😂
@@GlenAndMado I hope so 😂
Kelburn is a fancy neighbourhood!
big money houses!
24:34 Yes. The story is that it is an Italian Flag - Wellington had many Italian immigrants after WW1
Damn there’s me thinking it was an Irish flag 🇮🇪 😂😂
There's areas in the gardens that you can see glow worms at night
The statue you asked "who is this guy" was John Plimmer the father of Wellington. Meant to have been the first person to dump a wheelbarrow of dirt into the Harbour to begin reclaiming the land where the CBD now sits.
There you go! We have you guys to tell us the history which makes the experience even better! 😂 thanks for that Dylan! Legend
Wellingtons a cool place quite the trendy arty crafty lot, you could wear a fryn pan on your head and get away with it😂😅
😂😂😂😂 love it hahaha yeah I feel what you mean John it definitely feels that way! The individuals born in the 2000s have a 90s fashion too 😅
You e managed to make wellington look really appealing. One of very few good days we have. You got very lucky.
The free store has food that businesses don’t sell during the day and they distribute it for free to people.
What are you smoking??? This year has been fantastic for good weather in Welly!
hope your well and having a lovely day! Actually since we arrived we have got alot of good weather just like Chelfyn mentioned 😂 we are staying for a month nearly and majorty of the days it has been sunny actually! all the best Glen And Mado ❤️
hahah we try to enjoy the moment and the little things 😅🙈
@@GlenAndMado To be fair, this has been an unusually good year. It's normally a much worse. You got lucky :)
Seriously though, I‘ve spent 11 years of my eventful life living in Wellington (Pōneke in Maori language)
3 years at Victora University of Wellington 1972 to 1974. Halcyon days.
Then 8 more working in government - 1979 to 1987
Loved it.
Wellington has a more European vibe to it, whereas Auckland feels very California-like.
Oh especially the housing estates! It felt so much like California! Wellington can’t be compared to Auckland, the capital is so much better 😎
Wellington's demographics are more Anglo-Celtic with Polynesians etc residing in places north such as Porirua.
@@michaelgrey7854😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 😂😂😂😂😂
Lol. What timber were those kit sets made of? I've never pulled apart a house to find American Timbers.
Welcome to Wellington
Thanks for the special greetings 🙂
Love it guys! I hope you're doing the Milford Sounds when you hit the South Island!!!
what a beautiful city!! If you could choose between Wellington and Auckland what would it be?
Wellington all day
Can't compare that as the construction of an underground train line in Downtown Auckland has turn into a big mess.
Parking and policing it in Wellington has been an issue for a long time.
I love the ireland actsend and i am a big connor mcgreccor fan so thats also why i like ireland people
Did you just fly your drone over the flight path?
Yep there's Irish every where in NZ, I am NZ born with Irish Scots Yorkshire ancestry so have most bases covered.
There a lot of pedestrian only walkways and roads in Auckland, you didn't have a decent look around while you were there.
The nickname Wellywood comes from its movie industry made famous by directors like Peter Jackson and James Cameron who live in the region
None of us call it that lol it’s a stupid nickname
My old home town. Haven't been back there since 1991.
Should visit sometime, bring back the good memories 🤪
You saying it's busy when Lambton Quay is effectively empty for anyone used to the area. 🤣
Anyways, it's always good to see your home through the eyes of someone new. Otherwise you end up only seeing the bad. Cheers for the good reminder that Wellington has a lot of good stuff going for it. :)
