  • In this video we discuss the importance of understanding neck cranks and how to defend them. In modern jiu-jitsu it's almost a lost art, until you run up against who knows how to use them, then you may be in trouble unless you practice them and prepare to defend them.

I was at a jujitsu school here in MN and one of the upper-level belts, who was around 280 lbs and a power lifter, did this to me in almost every roll. I was a 170 lb white belt at the time. Turns out the guy was just a jackass who held a grudge against me because I out boxed one of the other students during a hard sparring session when I was still a new student, even though it was the other student who initiated the hard sparring (I also have a 2nd dan in karate and a bb TKD.) I apologized profusely but the issue was never resolved. So, I left that gym. Anyway, I wish I would have figured out this counter earlier on because it came on insanely fast and hurt like crazy for days afterwards.
Much happier at my new gym.

I think all Jiu-Jitsu classes or courses should have disclosure aggrements signed. No neck cranks, be very careful with chokes, armlocks, no spinal locks, etc. People should be made aware of what's not allowed before taking a physical activity like Jiu-Jitsu.

I don't agree, BJJ is self defense before anything and in a street fight anything goes this was the origin story of BJJ or Gracie jiujitsu. this is the problem with the sport of jiujitsu is that the sport only drills for the sport and no longer self defense

@@trhoades2063 When you see one too many stupid things happen from people practicing Jiujitsu you’ll understand why at the very least a whole review and supervision is required.
When an inexperienced person doesn’t understand the consequences of not stopping a can-opener in time, simply because the opponent has not tapped, that means there has to be a complete revision of the pedagogy.

I like how beating that can opener sets up the armbar. Esp if they grab deep and really commit to it

I kept getting my neck cranked today while in bottom closed guard. As soon as I put my hands around my neck, that disappeared. And watching this video confirmed my thoughts and gave me some new insights.

People love to shit on the can opener but you can actually use it effectively to pass if you use it as a control position rather than a neck crank. Just use it to get to your feet and stuff their hips with your knees. From there you will have a huge posture advantage and you can often pass without even handfighting.

Looks like an easy sweep if both arms are on the head ans they arr in guard you can end up mounting them.

7:19 not a good defense in my opinion. a good opponent will maintain control of that arm and it makes you vulnerable to some type of armlock (likely americana)

    • @RobinGieseler

I use it all the time. It works, just dependent on proper placement of the arm and timing.
