Yep, same here. I’m there to learn, and making mistakes and being challenged is part of that process. People quit because they really just don’t want to learn or be challenged. If they relished their failures as learning experiences, it would be motivating, not discouraging. This applies to so many things in life, where people just want to win and have things always go their way, which is out of touch with reality.

New blue belt here. I'm getting absolutely crushed by higher belts and the higher white belts are catching me in dominant positions. Sometimes it can get very disheartening. Also I'm in my mid thirties with a full time occupation family etc. But you know what I won't stop. Life is too short so I'm gona keep on going no matter what.

+David L Hahahha. I remember when i wrestled in high school, i had a day, i would NEVER forget. Its a long story so bare with me lol. Well, it was my freshmen year in high school, i didn't join the wrestling team when i should have. Wrestling season was alredy HALF WAY DONE. So half way through the season 2 of my freinds FINALLY convinced me to join the team. So i join half way through season, buy all my stuff all that, then i go to my first practice, it was AWESOME to me, i felt like i learned so much in one day and i felt like i had the heart of a lion and i learned alot and would LOVE wrestling. Well after a couple more practices i finally get my first match. I lose, but i was expexting to, i got pinned in like 30sec's, i felt like i never wrestled before, i felt like a nobody, but after 30secs after my lose i realized "wait, i was expecting to lose, i needed that to happen to learn, remember?" Then i went in practice the next day and was motivated as ever. For the next week i practiced my butt off, learned alot, went in the next match, lost in about 1min, not good at all. But realized, he has HALF a season more practice then me, im not gonna be great. So after the lose i was motivated as ever again and practiced hard and learned as much as i could. THEN I HAD A DAY,...... WHERE IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM EVER, we were practicing drills and i was doing bad at them, i was failing everything, i couldnt sprawl on ANYTHING, couldn't take them down, couldnt get of of this situation fast/good enough, couldnt take people down properly, couldnt DO ANYTHING WRITE FOR SOME REASON. I was getting worse and worse and doing things wrong even more and more as we changed drills and went further in practice. I was FAILING EVERYTHING i was supposed to do. Then we started a new drill and i was failing it to, then i was SOOOOO close to CRYING, i was doing so bad and i was getting VERY MAD and emotional. I couldn't do anything and was going to cry, but then it was time to go home, i got out of there as quickly as i possibly could and went home. i went to practice the next day and i told myself, "Dont let yesterday affect today, leave the past in the past." i practiced and did PERFECTLY FINE, I wasn't perfect that practice, i never am, but i didnt do BAD AT ALL THAT DAY. I realized "ohh i just had a off day, thank god." It was just a day where i wasn't meant to do good i guess. Then i went home and realized i had a match tomorrow. Then i got REALLY NERVOUS!! I started to get mad again and realized " THERE'S NO WAY IM GOING TO WIN AFTER THAT PRACTICE LIKE THAT" I was so bad that day i thought i was JUST BAD and definitely was not going to win. Then I WON my first match ever ( my 4th match). I learned a lesson after i won and thought about it. "I am going to have BAD DAYS ALL THE TIME! But its the bad days that form you INTO YOUR BEST " Just dont stop, you will have days where you dont perform so well but those days matter the most. They motivate you and you won't like them, so you will force yourself to get better to avoid those days.
I am most definitely suffering through blue belt blues. I wish I could say otherwise but it’s been hard. Younger guys that can get to the studio more are progressing faster than I want to admit. I was a rock solid four stripe white belt. I felt like I was unraveling Jiu-Jitsu mysteries. I was tapping blue belts. I feel like a spaz now and I’m getting injured more frequently (which scares me in its own way). Thank you for the content. 😊🙏
I been a blue belt since 2006... is it called the blue belt curse there's times I just want to quit jiu jitsu is too addicting but now I'm not in a hurry to get my purple belt I just focus on my techniques but the way you explained it really makes perfect sense keep showing the vids... Subscribe for life... thanks for the advice
+David L Going on 4 years as a blue belt myself. I finally got my last two stripes 6 months ago. It's tough going from blue to purple, I've always heard it's the hardest to go from.
+jason Alander how much are you training ? David L - 10 years at blue yourself 4 ? Your either never on the mat or not progressing am not trying to troll here
I have just started doing BJJ and I am, of course, a White Belt. I have wrestled my whole life and finally put on my Black Belt after over many years. Im pretty cool if I dont put on new, higher belts fast or slow because I am doing it to just have fun. Belts are cool but its the learning of new and wild stuff Im down for.
being a white belt was way more fun than being blue.If you do well as a white belt you feel amazing you just expect to do well as a blue belt.thanks for the video.
thanks this is a awsome video that i can apply not only to my bjj but also my kempo because i do the same thing in kempo feeling like im not progressing
I'm a white belt and I still feel like that, but I can honestly say that I learn more on the days I don't feel like going to train. Just surviving a bad night on the mat keeps me humble.
I felt like this when I got my third stripe on my purple belt and I just stopped. I shouldn't have. I have just started Muay Thai instead because there is nowhere I can learn Jiu Jitsu where I live right now.
Why don't you start your own then? I am sure there would be people interested in doing BJJ, but like you, have no place to go. You build your own club and as they get better, so will you.
Ingmar Fris Find a gym or hall and then advertise yourself. If you got mats that helps, if not, you can always get some. Contact some of your old school teachers and ask for advice and even helping you get started. I am sure they would love to help you bring Jiu-jitsu to others.
you could try social media man: there are a lot of sites dedicated to helping people with common interests meet up. You can get some rubber mats at most any sporting goods store and some hardware stores probably, then all you need is a garage or an extra bed room in someones place. you could even find a shady spot in a park and throw down a tarp and put mats on top of that. Think of it like this: if training jiu jitsu is important enough to you that you would be willing to do any of that, then its only natural that there are probably lots of other people who also think its important enough that they would be willing to do those things. Youre never going to get back the time that you lose: spend it on what you really want to spend it on!
As a new white belt - it's so easy to lose perspective. I might be feeling like i'm not improving after some rolls with tough blue belts. But then you roll with the white belt who just started and it's like, "oh....that's how I used to be."
are you explaining a documentary about mountains under the oceans? lol. i'm a white belt now maybe when i'm at blue and facing the issues you explained i'll definitely remember this video. thanks.
I'm a white belt 4 strip and have been passed over for three promotions I've been a 4 strip for 12 months! I'm so pissed I quite 3 months ago. I'm starting to feel like I don't want to be a new blue belt on account of time served, I didn't make the grade on merit then a blue belt will feel like a token gesture, I'd be embarrassed to wear it, everyone would know I got it on time served. Still trying to reconcile the way I feel and find my way back to the mat - honestly I would prefer to decline a blue belt and just wait for a purple belt.
I am a 2 stripe blue belt & lately I have been watching all my old sparring videos when I was a 3 or 4 stripe white belt. It saddens me because I saw how much better I was in terms of jiu jitsu technique compared to how I am now. I used to be able to flow and change guards but now it seems I am way too focused on single leg x or x guards that my game has become too predictable ☹
No disrespect to your academy or BJJ in general. A majority of the frustration people feel can be tied directly to the teaching methods and teaching philosophy used by professors that teach this sport. My frustration stems from not making progress when rolling. The general philosophy I have observed regarding full resistance sparring can best be described as "sink or swim" "survival of the fittest" "figure it out as you go". When you suck at something and you know it, even when you practice consistently, little victories don't really mean squat if overall you rarely can successfully pull off a series of move that end in a victory. My experience is that the way BJJ is taught the problem. Not so much the technical teaching but more on the tactical side. Training rarely let's one practice sequences enough to become proficient. Here's another example, how many acadamies practice takedowns regularly? If my stand up game training consists of a couple of reps of some random takedown the day before a tourney, I really don't have a lot of faith I'm going to get a takedown in competition. My "stand up game" consists of taking a knee at this point. Helios philosophy was there are no bad students and I agree. The way BJJ is taught and practiced is my opinion is why people drop out. If blue belt retention is such a problem across the sport then maybe the way the sport is taught should be re evaluated instead of convincing people they're evaluation of their progress is wrong.
Ask more questions about things you want to sharpen such as takedowns. Takedowns are one of the most important and practical aspects of jiu jitsu. If you can’t get the fight to the ground, there’s no point in being good at fighting on the ground. Be an eager and inquisitive student, and trust your teacher. If you can’t learn from a teacher due to their style, try a new one. But it’s best to pick a coach you trust and stick with them rather than bounce around
I'm over 40 and white belt, train off and on, 2 years. The better thing for me, don't think about colour of belt, lets think about monks in the mountains they train all their life and don't expect anything, don't have belts and any promotions, just eat, sleep, meditate. For me its just part of fitness and part of chess, which I just started to learn to do combinations in my game. This is a big positive thing in my life. God, Family, Jiu Jitsu.
Ive said it for years. There should be more belts in BJJ, like traditional jujitsu. The time gaps in between belts is too long. People feel that they aren't progressing. They feel stagnant. And stripes dont cut it. It might be silly, but people need to feel that they're making progress and rightly or wrongly, they associate progress with getting a new belt colour.
I just got my blue belt. I'm looking at it like this, I'm already a black belt I'm just living in the past and being where I am right now at blue belt is the past. If that makes sense
Great Video. Great Message. But can't stop looking at the belt... looks like it's going to fall off. Am I wrong? Like where I train... the leader does the same thing... and his belt falls off first 5 seconds of rolling.... is this done on purpose?
i really don't care about the color of my belt, my outfit is kinda ridiculous, i use a lage gi from my father and a thiny short white belt from when i used to practice judo as a kid, i like when higher belts think to have an easy one on me without knowing i did 5 years of judo and 2 of grappling! ahah!
feeling alot of this i am a new blue belt alot of people that are lower rank are better and it got to the point /were i get embarrassed what should i do i am always geting in bad positions and getting beat thinking its just not for me anymore
My wife just told me we just like crazy Jiu-Jitsu (her name for it not mine) because we like to wear our “robe”. Haha I busted out laughing. We love Jiu-Jitsu bc of the stress relief and so much more.
It's kind of funny, because I was a white belt for almost two years before I got my blue belt, and I went 4 days a week, so it wasn't cus I was inconsistent or anything like that, but my instructor just didn't feel like it was time to promote me, for whatever reason, I never questioned it. Well three years later, I'm barely about to get my purple, I still go 4 days a week, but ur prolly wondering why I'm boring u with this, the fact is tha right now, I'm a 4 stripe blue belt that sort of beats alot of my purple belt classmates, some of them are on their way to Brown. We have a guy named Nick who was just recently promoted to Purple Belt, the guy is like legit Brown Belt level, but he was a Blue Belt for 7 years. I see alot of blue belts come in, some of them are like three to four stripes, and I wreck them, out of disapointment. There are a couple things that I should consider, for one, I'm 240 lbs, I explode more, I'm a little younger than most of my classmates, but this is due to most of these guys obtaining their blue belts within a year, year and a half later and they're already graduating to purple belt with me. To me what's wrong with this picture is that they were given candy. They're far from purple belt level, I mean I can feel that, anybody can feel that they're not up to par with the level they repesent. In the end my point is, don't worry about the belt, it's just a piece of clothing, it made me sad to watch everyone get their blue belts before me, even tho I went to class more than they did, and sometimes competed more than they did. But it's like what Nick told me "Dude I was a Blue Belt for 7 years, if ur still a blue belt and keep training, then ur just gana be one badass Blue Belt." In conclusion, it's all you, the belt and stripes are just what they are, clothes, and your still as good as you are with or without them.
its just like when you play cod guys, you might be dropping nukes game after game and then all of a sudden its takes all your focus and patience to get a 0.6 kd and hold yourself from throwing the controller shit happens, tomorrow you might be dropping nukes again

Stephanie Grodem I enjoyed ur story.. thank you.
+John Smith had to stop for a while for injuries and work but now I'm back on the mat.
+David L Keep training! You'll get there!
+David L Going on 4 years as a blue belt myself. I finally got my last two stripes 6 months ago. It's tough going from blue to purple, I've always heard it's the hardest to go from.
+jason Alander how much are you training ? David L - 10 years at blue yourself 4 ? Your either never on the mat or not progressing am not trying to troll here
David how much training are you doing 10 years at one belt seems a bit long
if you are a blue belt for over 10 years im sorry but you aint doing it right
I have just started doing BJJ and I am, of course, a White Belt.
Great video. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
brilliant piece of advice haveing this issue at the moment myself this helped a lot
I'm glad it helped. Keep training!
I really needed to hear this. Thank you.
This is good info. Thanks for sharing it.
Wow! How did he know about this way back in 2016? ; ) Great video. Thanks professor.
Thank you professor. Good advice.
It's been 2 years and I just got promoted to Purple belt this past weekend. The secret is, COME TO CLASS EVERYDAY..
Man I was brown belt and 3 stripe then I fell I need to quit now I want to come back
As a blue belt this was very helpful, thank you!
How?
Excellent video! Really good!👍🏻🥋
Thank you!
I quit/taken a break at blue belt because I was exhausted from training 4 days a week and it was very expensive in NYC.
A question plz
Your coachs give you a Certified belt or if you change the gym u restart on White belt
are you explaining a documentary about mountains under the oceans? lol. i'm a white belt now maybe when i'm at blue and facing the issues you explained i'll definitely remember this video. thanks.
Awesome advice mate👍👍So True
This is the truth for all skills.
As a chess player I see the wave in ELO rating graphs all the time.
Nobody learns in a straight line
I'm a white belt 4 strip and have been passed over for three promotions I've been a 4 strip for 12 months! I'm so pissed I quite 3 months ago. I'm starting to feel like I don't want to be a new blue belt on account of time served, I didn't make the grade on merit then a blue belt will feel like a token gesture, I'd be embarrassed to wear it, everyone would know I got it on time served. Still trying to reconcile the way I feel and find my way back to the mat - honestly I would prefer to decline a blue belt and just wait for a purple belt.
thank you for making this video as a blue belt i feel like i hit the bottom this has given me better insight. oss
im a white belt but the same thing happed to me
Great Advice, Thank you
Thank you can really relate too this
I am a 2 stripe blue belt & lately I have been watching all my old sparring videos when I was a 3 or 4 stripe white belt. It saddens me because I saw how much better I was in terms of jiu jitsu technique compared to how I am now. I used to be able to flow and change guards but now it seems I am way too focused on single leg x or x guards that my game has become too predictable ☹
THANK YOU!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I'm a white belt and I am 43. Win, lose or draw I always get a great workout. So I will never quit. The belt is really incidental to me.
Hello, what is your current belt now ? Got promoted against your own will ? 2 years has passed since your comment, curious to know....
@@rikunevalainen8154 Got a blue belt in May 2019.
But it’s best to pick a coach you trust and stick with them rather than bounce around
bro, ive got the white belt no stripe blues..... thanks for this
I'm over 40 and white belt, train off and on, 2 years.
Very helpful video, thnks.
Exactly how i feel thank you
Very good insite!
I just got my blue belt. I'm looking at it like this, I'm already a black belt I'm just living in the past and being where I am right now at blue belt is the past. If that makes sense
Great Video. Great Message.
But can't stop looking at the belt... looks like it's going to fall off.
Am I wrong? Like where I train... the leader does the same thing... and his belt falls off first 5 seconds of rolling.... is this done on purpose?
i really don't care about the color of my belt, my outfit is kinda ridiculous, i use a lage gi from my father and a thiny short white belt from when i used to practice judo as a kid, i like when higher belts think to have an easy one on me without knowing i did 5 years of judo and 2 of grappling! ahah!
Hhhh. You are the best
feeling alot of this i am a new blue belt alot of people that are lower rank are better and it got to the point /were i get embarrassed what should i do i am always geting in bad positions and getting beat thinking its just not for me anymore

Don't care after 35 years in martial arts I still think it looks like crap. I don't care if Helio or even Santa Claus or anyone else ties it that way.
Combatinho haha your a mess
In what way? Enlighten me with your infinite wisdom and 2 months of training. If it looks like shit than it looks like shit.
I need answers ?
- bleu belt bleu's
- MC Dojo
- fake martial art
My wife just told me we just like crazy Jiu-Jitsu (her name for it not mine) because we like to wear our “robe”. Haha I busted out laughing. We love Jiu-Jitsu bc of the stress relief and so much more.
Thank you.
Thank you for this
Hope it helps!
OSSSSSS great advice... amazing
Thank you sir!

When you wear your gi for doing a whiteboard presentation 😄
Amazing
