I was very slow to listen to this because I love Dionne Warwick's rendering of their song so much. So glad I got around to it at last. Wonderful.

Dionne Warwick is an outstanding singer and great talent. After some arm twisting she had the great fortune to work with the Gibbs. The writing, the customization to her soulful voice, the production, the backing vocals all added up to a magnificent recording. So how could anything be better? Well...once upon a time there were three beautiful, magic brothers who grew up singing in harmony...Seriously, they believed in the song so much, their own voices make it even better for me.
Love this song. Such wonderful harmonies. They all got better looking with age. Such good people.

I, too, love both versions. Being a Bee Gees fan has me loving theirs more. I think the harmonies seal the deal. Also. the brothers said their songs were like their children. They loved each one and had a deep passion for each creation.

They can sing anything. And write anything. The arrangement is phenomenal. No idea how they kept topping themselves decade after decade. And that soft breathy voice from Barry is so understated.

When they first presented the song to Dionne Warwick she did not care for it. Once it became a massive hit for her she changed her mind! ☺️

The first time I realised that they wrote also songs for others was in 1968. Their Australian friends, a group called The Marbles had a massive hit with a track called 'Only One Woman'. But even in their Aussie-period, many other artists sang songs of them. Barry Gibb won the award 'Songwriter of the year in 1965'.
I just got started reading the "Decades" book for the 1960's. As a young teenager Barry was sought out in Australia for his songwriting. (The twins were still so young, they hadn't really started yet). Col Joye heard his song (Underneath The) Starlight of Love, and loved them performing it in 1962! He went on to cover it.
Dionne sings this well but absolutely love the bee gees singing it so beautiful

I prefer the Dionne's version, from production perspective (but I have to consider this is live performance). For those who don't know. There is also the demo version done by Barry for her in falsetto.

I loved this song when Dion Warwick sang it. Didn’t even know Bee Gees wrote it until later on. I absolutely love The Bee Gees. 2023 and I’m still listening. Can’t ever get enough of my beautiful boys. ❤❤❤❤

Dionne has an amazing voice and presentation. Always liked her. She was also a powerhouse that didn't take 💩off anyone. A real fighter for civil rights and an AIDS activist. That being said, the guys do an amazing job. Again, why couldn't they have had a hit with such a wonderful song?
They couldn't have gotten any Air time no matter how good the song was. Not at that time, with the backlash targeting them. Best to write for other artists.
On a side-note, I kinda lost a bit of respect for Dionne when she decided to launch her physic network Crap? Not long after that she was all caught up in some lawsuit filed against her, but I can't recall what it was about? Anywaysss, it's Lots of water under a bridge now!😉

I loved Dionne Warwick singing this when it first came out. It took a while to learn that it was written by the Beegees. I much prefer them singing it. I grew up with Dionnes version and I liked the song very much. I never knew, that it was a song from the Bee Gees since two years ago, but after hearing their version I absolutely felt in love with the song, Barrys voice in it, the harmonies and now its one of my favourite songs by them!

As a insta - fan baby ( listening to BGs from birth) and continued for 40 plus yrs, this is one of the reasons I grew up in awe of them. Thank you Chad for your superb and endless effort in keeping their legacy alive and the impact your channel has had on TH-cam and perhaps on some reactors...I have noticed several reactors featuring BGs, our generation and younger on their channels that started after you made your debut. Such a pleasant surprise to see them liking and acknowledging our brothers.

The Bee Gees version of “Heartbreaker” to me, is better to listen to. But then, I was never a big Dionne Warwick fan. The harmony just touches your heart more. Enjoyed your reaction and the comparison was spot on! Thanks, Chad!

I am reading the Bee Gees "Decades" book for the 1960's. In 1962 (think year before "My Old Man's a Dustman") Barry, already known for his songwriting, had written a song called "(Underneath the) Starlight of Love." He wanted to sell it to the popular performer Col Joye, so he went and talked to him (and his brother Kevin) where they were rehearsing, and was able to have them listen to the young brothers perform it. Barry said he didn't think Col liked his writing as much as the brothers' singing, but at any rate, by 1963 Col Joye (he was sort of an "Elvis" type idol to the brothers) recorded "Starlight." The book notes it was the first cover of one of their songs. There have been at least 7000 covers since, and that number keeps going up. Here is something interesting about these boys, as teenagers. By 1965, they wanted to have an office for a headquarters, and by then they were making enough money to be able to pay for it (and still feed their family). But it was more than that, they wanted to help other artists with the connections they had already made. So, people would store instruments and clothes, and then have a business like place to meet Australian music industry contacts that the Gibb brothers helped them with. Yes, they were driven to succeed, but they also put a hand out to others along the way.
I'm just about finished with the "Decades" book. I've got sticky notes in it everywhere with songs to look up...all those people who covered their songs. I pre-ordered the 1970's book last year and was bummed when the release date got pushed back from December to March, and then again to May. Hopefully, it'll really be out next month.

I didn't know that much about their days in Australia, so there is a lot of new information. I planned to get the 70's book this week after it was released, but now I'll probably just wait until May.

Great reaction! A little known Bee Gees gem recorded by Leo Sayer is Heart Stop Beating in Time. Mo actually cried that Heartbreaker should have been one of their songs only. It meant that much to him. Love these guys forever x

Both versions of this song are great but in the end the one I always prefer to listen to are The Bee Gees. To me their voices, their harmonies, their musical arrangements are superior to any other artist. Thank you for that great reaction Chad. ❤❤❤
The clip where Mo and Robin are dancing was from the end of the 'Kiss of Life' video. It was clipped short in most but I saw one longer running clip.

Great reaction, Chad, as always. I loved Dionne's version so much that I replaced her album after losing it in Katrina. BUT, when our guys sang their version for the first time, I just fell in love with the song all over again. ❤️ Those harmonies are simply to die for!
Dionne Warwick's version is excellent but the song, sung by the creators themselves, is even much better. My limited knowledge of the English language no longer finds suitable positive adjectives to express how excellent the Bee Gees were/are.

I do love Dionne Warwick singing this song very much, but there is no comparison with the sensation Bee Gees. I've never heard them sing this song (I'm 62!) which is frustrating, I missed out so much from them. Love Dionne too though. Brilliant singer. 💝💝💝💝💝

Barry did a complete album demo for the Kenny Rogers album Eyes That See in the Dark. I liked Kenny's album but love Barry's demo more. I also love Dionne's version of this song. Like you said, it is alright to love both. Diana Ross' 'Experience' and theirs are also both great
My understanding is that when the Bee Gees presented this to Dionne she wasn’t sold on it but went ahead and recorded it anyway trusting the Bee Gees confidence that it was a hit in waiting. Dionne later said she was laughing all the way to the bank as the album this was featured on was her biggest commercial success of the 80’s (Bee Gees also we’re producers for that album) and I think it was Maurice who later said he wished they’d kept the song for themselves! I’ve never heard this (their version) before, I do like it but come on, IT WAS DIONNE’s!! Dionne’s stellar recording of it is my FAVE song from the 80’s 😊

Hello, Chris. I've been told by many of you that they wrote/performed well over 1K songs. But as far as ones performed by others, not so sure. You could probably count them with 2 hands.

Of the two "new" songs included on the 2001 "The Record" compilation, this one is much better. "Emotion" just didn't have the same feel as the Samantha Sang original, but "Heartbreaker" was done very well and actually has a smoother sound than the Dionne Warwick original.
Next time .....to listen the original demo of this song for Dionne made by Barry and Albhy Galuten (on keyboards)
Comparing the song Immortality sung by Celine Dion to Barry’s demo version is interesting because believ it or not, i prefer Barry’s version

I’ll just say it. I don’t like Dionne Warwick. Her voice is ok but I haven’t liked her in interviews. With that bias in mind😂, I LOVE The Bee Gees version and I can see why Mo cried at the thought of needing to give it to someone else to record because at the time it wouldn’t get radio play if they released it. The version is marvelous: Barry’s lead and the harmonies.

I must say, I this case, I prefer Dionne's version. The Bee Gees are awesome, and yes, their harmonies on this song are amazing, I still feel this version, for lack of a better word, seems a bit too low on engery. Don't get me wrong, I had this Bee Gees version blasting through my speakers for countless times, because it's great, but I just feel that in this case Dionne Warwick version is a stronger one.
