    The best explanation of the Vulcans I remember a friend saying, "Vulcans do have emotions but, unlike the rest of us, they do not let emotions have them. They are also perfectly capable of telling a lie, if it is logical to do so."

    I think the struggles so many of us have with our emotions has always made Vulcans intriguing. It really hit me when Tuvok said "Do not mistake composure for ease" as that is something I can really relate to

      emotions usually surface when the subject in question finds it difficult or down right impossible to find a solution to a given problem
      you want something, you're met with a negative, you get angry.... as simple as that.
      BUT!, if you can piece apart the problem itself and find the root of the negative, even if it all sums up to "you're an idiot" regarding whomever is giving you the negative, then *having* that root helps you solve the problem itself, therefore, no anger.
      if you want something, and you're met with a negative, circle around to find the root of that negative, and still obtain the something regardless of negative... if the person denying you that is not smart enough to anticipate you, THEIR loss!
      when you know "who is guilty of what" as Garak would put it, you no longer get angry or emotional at anything.... you know exactly why things are, and how to deal with them.

    • @pike100
      @pike100 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bcn1gh7h4wkYour explanation seems to assume that emotions are always negative. A further assumption seems to be that the person feeling the emotions must be coveting something.

    • @bcn1gh7h4wk
      @bcn1gh7h4wk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pike100 I'm talking about "emotions" as "behavior-inhibiting" emotions.
      you can still be overwhelmed with inspiration and happiness, both _emotions,_
      but neither of them would _prevent you from acting_
      _anger_ is an emotion... anger _due to frustration_ is an inhibition to act.
      you can still be angry due to frustration, but if you know why that frustration comes along, you would have anticipated that anger beforehand.
      anger due to frustration (specifically) comes when you're unable to achieve something that you planned to achieve, and are met with a negation you didn't anticipate.
      when that negation is (specifically) the behavior of *a person* and not *an unavoidable circumstance,* that person behaving in such a way intentionally for the sole purpose of pissing you off doesn't merit that show of anger.
      therefore -> "you're an idiot"
      .....people never consider the scenario that they'll be called out for being wrong, so, very few plan ahead for that.
      just consider that, and problem solved.

    As Spock turned human pointed out, Vulcans aren’t void of emotion, they have extremely STRONG emotions and contain them with years of mental training. Suddenly being human knocked down those walls, and made him snap at Sam Kirk over not clearing away his dirty dishes from lunch fast enough.

      One of the most recent story arcs in the Star Trek "comics" goes into some detail about Surak's early rise to power during the aftermath of Vulcan's last great war. Spock touches some weird artifact that transports him to that time to where he sees some of Surak's "methods" of conversion to pure logic to be less than stellar (Think Chairmen Mao's playbook..specifically towards indocturing children).

    • @Ge1Ri4

      @@recoveringsoul755Spock felt that because he was half-human, he had to be more Vulcan than a full Vulcan, and as a result, he was the best or among the best at many things Vulcan. Being half-Vulcan, his physical strength was many times that of a human. He could easily kill if he wished. But the whole point of the nerve pinch was to knock someone out because it was illogical to kill unnecessarily. Remember that Vulcans celebrate IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination). You don't celebrate life by extinguishing it unnecessarily.

    Thank you so much for exploring the neurodiversity link here. I’ve seen ST commonly mentioned in ASD groups, but not the other way around. (This despite an ST:Disco Engineering Dept that clearly has the policy “Neurotypicals need not apply”!😂 Tig wasn’t exactly first!! ❤)
    As a devoted fan of 5 decades and a late-diagnosed AuDHD, I literally choked up and cried when Disco retconned and divulged Spock’s Vulcan dyslexia. As I explained to my tween AuDHD son, “All our lives, so many of us have found meaning in the belief that we were like him, which provided some comfort in our isolation. Dyslexia is a neurodivergence. ST had just made CANON that *he* is one of *us*. They’re actually making a nod to our affinity and then made the kinship real!”
    I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Nimoy once, and he was so gracious and clearly humbled and grateful for the huge degree of contribution he was able to help make to so many people through Spock, and somewhat awed that that legacy had continued. I wish he could have seen that it continues to this day, and that Spock continues to encourage and inspire a new generation of fans. 🖖❤

    I think no.5 is a point well made, I was diagosed with Autism almost two years ago (I'm 38 now, though having learned of it in 2019 and finally making the connection & starting the diagnosis process), I've often felt a lot more like a Vulcan than a human, and emotions just get in the way of things, both my own and others', but the ability to look at things in a logical manner versus getting emotional about something that may not actually be worth the emotion, it's handy, and being socially inept (my own choice of words, cos it's true in my case!) means I can spend more time looking into things, learning about them and working on stuff, it's great to be ND... :D

    Thanks Sean and Jack for the lovely discussion of autism and the Vulcans in this video and article where we identify a lot with the Vulcans and I love how much later Trek has played into that identification, especially Strange New Worlds.
    I do have a couple of points to note though
    1) Decent discussion on social interaction issues though in general communication is an issue of neurotypical and neurodivergent people not being able to understand each other, each having different communication styles.
    2) Generally autistic people in UK and US prefer using Identity First Language (IFL) where we are 'autistic people' rather than 'people with autism' since autism is a part of us, it cannot be removed and there's a bit of a problematic history with autism being purposefully separated from the person to suggest it can be "cured", or even needs to be in the first place. That said, you would 'have' a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) because that is something given to you which describes you rather than directly you.

    One thing that I had to think about after watching SNW is how Ponn Farr worked. In TOS, Vulcans would mate every 7 years or die, but in SNW, Spock and T'Pring were "mating" all the time, and Spock was two timing her with Nurse Chapel. Looks like I wasn't the only one to think about it 🤣

    • @mariajohnson-tanner2720
      @mariajohnson-tanner2720 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Vulcans CAN mate anytime they want to, it's just that every seven years they must because the constant suppression of all their emotions build up over time so this is the only way they can release all those tensions, mate or die. The only other way to release those tensions is meditation or to fight an opponent to the death.

    One of the things I heard years ago, (that seems to have been abandoned), was that much of the 'power' of Vulcans were in their hands. They apparently had some type of innate power that other species didn't have, which was why they could do a Vulcan neck pinch (which originally nobody else could at one time), mind meld, and why they don't shake hands. There was even an episode of Enterprise that said Vulcans don't use their hands to eat, which I always understood it because of that otherworldly power or sensitivity they had. Even the mating ritual from Search for Spock seemed to calm 'young' Spock by touching his fingers/hand.

      My thought on Pon Farr, it's that it's more about a steadily growing neurochemical imbalance. 'cause here's the part of it that hints that it's not just "part of their race", Vulcans and Romulans are the same species. Romulans don't have that problem. this leads to the possibility that maybe the Vulcan "logic" CAUSES Pon Farr? Vulcans just treat it as normal, but is it... really?

    The neck pinch was used long before Star Trek. Doc Savage used the procedure in the books that were written from 1933 onwards. I'd recommend reading these books as they are incredibly futuristic, with many examples of accurate predictions.

    I’d really like to see a Vulcan give a Cardassian a nerve pinch, given that they have those large neck ridges which I assume protect any arteries and nerve plexus’ that when impinged would cause loss of consciousness. Also, I’d like to see if Vulcans could mind meld with them given that on DS:9 the Vulcan female member of the Maquis had failed spectacularly when she attempted to mind meld with Gul Dukat…which Dukat attributed to Cardassian’s superior mental discipline…rather smugly I thought.

This ends up becoming a serious factor in his difficulties with T'Pring. And yes she's made out to be a superwoman who can solve just about any problem thrown at her. Meanwhile, Spock is no intellectual equal in this series. He's constantly beat out by Uhrua AND Chapel. He's been completely stunted in SNW and has been made into a hormonal bag of idiocy. A man who can't seem to figure out anything. Yeah it's a relationship for the times all right.

    Enterprise corrects the discrepency about Ponn Farr by stating they are CONDITIONNED to copulate once every seven years. Not meaning they can't physically speaking just as T'Pol demonstrates throughout the series; jealousy, flirting, cheating, etc...
    There is another place on Earth named after the God of Fire, the island of Vulcano in the Lipari archipelago between Italy and Sicily, one of those islands is also the famous Stromboli volcano.
    Had Romulus not been so far away, Vulcan dissidents might as well have just had Nuclear Fusion propulsion but to reach the Romulus we know in a timely manner, a Warp Drive is more likeky, even at lower speeds like Warp 3 or 4.
    Possibly that that they left with ALL starships available leaving Vulcans with no other choice than not only rebuild their society but also rebuild their space program from scratch. I couls imagine than upon leaving the future Romulans blew up all ground facilities of the Vulcan space program, so no more VABs, factories, launchpads, engine test and design labs and power plants... all of that as a reprisail against their brothers. Given how, in the Potemkin fan series, some original stranded Vulcans deal between eachother, some behaving more like Romulans, it's entirely possible.

      They all have the ability, but not every Vulcan was born with such easy access to it. Most Vulcans during that period avoided anything to do with mind melds because their society had deemed it undesirable due to infiltration of their government by Romulan machinations designed to rob them of their cultural heritage and make them easy to manipulate. As a telepathic ability, mind melds would have been an enormous threat to Romulan agents and would keep them from being able to control Vulcan society - which is precisely why they vilified the practice and started pushing them into forgetting that every Vulcan has the potential.

    I read in an ST Novel (forgot the title, such a long time ago) that Vulcans are able to engage persistent mental links with each other. This was done during the migration of the Romulan's ancestors ventured to find a new home. Unfortunately, probably due to relativistic time dilation or just the impossible distances, these links were eventually severed. Not having the technology for intragalactic communications, Vulcans (and the eventual Romulans afeter they found their new home in Ch'Havran and Ch'Rihan) forgot this history.

    Vulcan (more strictly _Vulcanus_ in the original Latin) was the god of fire, volcanoes, deserts & metalworking. As is typical with the Romans they pinched the Greek equivalent gods and renamed them. His Greek name is _Hephaestus_ (I'll spare you the geek in me wanting to write that in Greek!)
    Obviously you can see the connection between the fictional Vulcan planet and the Greco Roman idea of the god. Hephaestus was the blacksmith to the gods (IIRC, so was Vulcan). Vulcan was said to live in Mount Etna - at least that's where the "smithy" was.
    He's tied to the story of the founding of Rome by Romulus. Tell me that's, or anything mentioned above, coincidental when it comes to much of Spock's origins and further explanation of the history and geography/geology of the planet Vulcan!

  • @MariaMartinez-researcher

    Several things. Another explanation for pon farr is that Vulcan males are able to have relations any time, but within pon farr they are fertile; a bit like human females menstrual cycle. Pon farr would be an extreme PMS.
    An usual thing in fanfiction is Vulcans getting drunk/high on chocolate. It comes from the novelization of The One With The Whales. Kirk buys chocolate mints to get exact change for the bus, and gives some to Spock. After all the events at the Aquarium, Kirk asks Spock if he is drunk, and Spock tells that sucrose (sugar) is intoxicating for Vulcans. Apparently sugar was not interesting enough, because even if some fanfiction tells stories of Vulcans inebriated with sugary stuff, lots of fanfiction have the funniest, craziest situations after a Vulcan has chocolate.

    I agree with the common assessment that the change in Chapel/Spock relationship in SNW vs TOS has to do with the writer's & Paramount's wish to estrange themselves from Roddenberry's often misogynistic perspectives. In TOS, Chapel is often portrayed as a one-dimensional character who is only interested in Spock. In TOS, she is constantly pining after him, even though he shows no love interest in her. This portrayal of Chapel is demeaning and reinforces the idea that women are only valuable for their relationships with men.
    In SNW, Chapel is a much more well-rounded character. She is clearly interested in Spock, but she is also her own person with her own interests and goals. She is not defined by her relationship with Spock, and she is not constantly pining after him. This portrayal of Chapel is much more respectful and empowering.
    I believe that the change in Chapel/Spock relationship is a positive step forward for Star Trek. It shows that the writers and Paramount are committed to creating a more evenhanded and respectful show.

      I don't know anything about the change in the Chapel-Spock relationship from that portrayed in the original series other than what I read in this and other comments. Here's what I, as a 12 to 13 year old viewer of the original series in its original time and date, thought in the Stone Age of those years.
      * Not everyone gets liked back by the person whom they like. That's a GREAT lesson that Star Trek provided, because everybody gets rejected sometime. There just might not ever be a mutual attraction and forcing someone to love you is a losing move. It seemed clear that the Spock - Nurse relationship would never reach lift off but it might continue to be used as a minor plot point of the characters.
      * Many shows in those years decided to not let a romance start or continue particularly between recurring characters because the audience would lose interest in the "dulled-down" relationship. That's why just about every woman who appeared in Bonanza died, or became a nun, or remembered that she was actually married. It's why in the western series Gunsmoke, Matt and Kitty never even held hands - they would just look "maturely" at each other every 8 to 10 episodes to ensure that we knew they really DID have a romance of some extremely boring nature.
      * Nurse Chapel (Majel Barrett) and Gene Roddenberry were carrying on an affair during the original series. The SUITS became convinced that negative gossip might increase about her personally, her character, and/or the character of Spock. And Chapel and Spock carrying on with each other in the show might exponentially increase negative publicity.
      [Majel and Gene did marry and she played parts in other Star Trek series.]
      * During the very interesting 60's and a bit less interesting 70's, women and girls were thinking that we, too, should have the opportunity to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. And some of us DID that while others wanted to marry a nice man and raise children, and others wanted to do both. I always thought that people should at least have the opportunity to do what they want to do.
      [And now some want to throw away the advancements that were accomplished by many forward-thinking brave people. SIGH.]
      Nurse Chapel had the opportunity to become a First Officer BUT she did NOT have the opportunity to remain a First Officer. In the ORIGINAL ORIGINAL two part opener she was the first officer (with a "more professional" not blonde) hair color. But when the wife of Jeffrey Hunter (the ORIGINAL ORIGINAL captain) told him that she saw no future in a space ship TV show he lost interest while the SUITS decided that a series with a woman running the ship wasn't going to be a hit show.
      Therefore, in the two part reworked Original Series opener she got reworked off the bridge and into the medical cabin to experience the longing looks at Spock that were never returned.
      Was Gene a misogynist? He was a man of that time - a forward thinker in terms of science (such as transporters and communicators) as well as story themes and structure. But Majel was not the only affair that he had in his life and, I think, he viewed that as an OK thing.
