The exit of Peter from Genesis was unexpected and traumatic. But the the Band suffered its greatest loss when guitarist extraordinaire Steve Hackett left.
BS Given Phil's condition, Gabriel should've volunteered to be in the last tour, covering vocals with Phil, helping with songs and parts too tough for Phil now. This was definitely the last Tour of the classic post Gabriel Genesis. I was there for the 92 WCD, 07 TioA and 22 Last Domino tours. Lots of missed opportunities. Chester should've been on drums as duo with Phil's son for the last tour. Ray Wilson should've been there to cover some CAS songs, like Alien Afternoon, Dividing Line, and one or two of the softer pop songs. And Gabriel there to support Phil, the band, the fans, and cover a few classics.
Phil was great with Genesis but nothing will ever replace the original Genesis Peter Gabriel years. If you were listening to UKProg at this time, you know exactly what I mean. From America 🫶🏻
I am glad that Peter Gabriel went his own way as he wrote one of my all time favourite albums So. Imagine if he hadn’t have gone solo, that album might have been just a dream and we would have lost such a talented man.
I never suspected there was animosity. After the split, Collins was still playing drums for Gabriel and Gabriel did some backup singing on Collins' work.
When interviewed together after the last show, Phil made a joke that he kept hearing someone from the audience yelling out and requesting “Suppers Ready”. 😂
PC played the drums in some PG solo album/s. It has been told by all the members of the band that PG leaving the band was due to the fact he had a child and wanted the band to stop for a while just when the band was about to reach some success. During the reharshals of the album TLLDOB Peter work in the lirics alone while the rest of the band was working on the music. He was traveling several times between his house and the farm studio to be with his wife and child. He was, in a way, like already out of the band or separated from the rest in a way and because of the amount of lyrics he had to write since it was going to be a concept doble album. At that time he was also working with William Friedking, director of The Exorcist in a proyect.
From everything that I've read, Phil was actually the most supportive band member when Peter left. And Phil played on some of Peter's solo albums, so it hardly seems like there was ever any bad blood between them.
One of the most tired arguments is that Phil Collins ruined Genesis and led them to pop. Two facts: 1. Genesis' first album was a blatant attempt to break into the pop genre. 2. Phil wanted to turn the band into an instrumental act like Mahavishnu Orchestra. Bonus fact: I have grown to love every song that Genesis did… Though admittedly some more than others 😊
A few extra points: Genesis didn`t instantly transform into pop. A Trick Of The Tail, Wind And Wuthering, And Then There Were Three and Duke were all mostly prog or art rock. It wasn`t Phil`s dictatorial decision to go pop. Mike and Tony still had often more of a say into things than Phil. They were not even trying to be commercial for the sake of it, they just jammed in the studio and that`s the kind of stuff they created. Too bad people don`t like to play the same genre over and over for decades.
Genesis was and will likely always be the Banks & Rutherford show. Gabriel, Hackett, and Collins all left because of this simple truth. Doesn't mean they were bitter; they just accepted Genesis for what it is.
I wouldn't say that much. Good as they may be, they're not at the same level as the previous albums from Nursery Cryme to The Lamb. Something essential to the balance of all ingredients has been lost. Those Genesis albums from 1971 to 1974 are one of the compositional peaks in modern music from any perspective.
@@albertvinyes4951 I disagree. In terms of songwriting, Wind And Wuthering is the peak of Genesis in my opinion, with One For The Vine being the ultimate peak of songwriting by any band. That song in itself is already better than most of the Gabriel era albums as a whole. And the overall sound and production, just forget it. The Gabriel era stuff doesn`t sound anything special or better in terms of production compared to its contemporaries, where as Wind And Wuthering sounds massive, clearly ahead of its time.
I’d agree. I think it was Lamb and Trick. Your mid 70’s Genesis was the cruise control. They’d overworked everyone, just milked it to death. So they always relied on those albums. The quality control is insane and dense. My opinion.
I am so old that I saw Genesis tour The Lamb with Gabriel. Then I saw Gabriel's first solo concert tour. I never liked anything Genesis after the Lamb, especially with 'Please put your jacket back on' Mr. Collins singing. So I never saw Genesis again, BUT I've seen every Gabriel tour I could. I've seen Bowie, Reed, Iggy, The Who, The Stones, Queen, The Stranglers, multiple times and hundreds more bands in the 70's and early 80s, in their peaks, but none put on the consistently amazing shows of Peter Gabriel. His musicians, lighting, voice and ALWAYS his direct interaction with the audience- really one of the best musicians you will ever see live. And thank you to Tony Levin, who played with Bowie, Reed, Gabriel, Fripp and others I'm sure I'm forgetting right now, 'cause I'm so old.
The whole of Genesis from beginning to end puts them in the same conversation as Floyd, Zeppelin, Who, Stones, Beatles and Moody Blues. Who among them, produced a star like Collins? To outdo a talent like Justin Hayward is amazing.
No other band besides the Beatles pulled off what Genesis did but in reverse order. Beatles started pop and went into a more progressive sound. Genesis started progressive and went more pop.
@@watkinsrory Yes I have but they're relatively different in the sense where Floyd didn't pursue and conquer commercial success quite like Genesis. Floyd's career meandered quite a bit, never quite following my original statement.
@mikelmart 🤣🤣🤣. Pink Floyd have one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Genesis have sold about 120 million records. Pink Floyd have sold over 200 million. They are one of this biggest selling bands of all time. Dark side of the moon is the 7th most sold records of all time. Genesis doesn't have one in the top 20. Edit Genesis top album Invisible touch 1.4 million copies. Pink Floyd top album Dark side of the moon 45 million copies.
Pete was in the studio when Phil was recording some of his biggest hits in the early to mid-eightees, so they were clearly great friends after Pete left Genesis.
I think that is a slight misconception because Phil didn't "take over" as if he was waiting for his turn and immediately went out front. All accounts I have read say that Phil was reluctant to sing and it was Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks that encouraged that mode of Genesis with Phil singing and it developed from there. The direction change was out of necessity because I also thought Peter wanted to go solo.
I must admit that I have never really heard or saw anything concrete that suggested that there was any ill-feeling of any real kind between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. I have always felt that Gabriel was a relatively easy person to get on with. While Collins as well as being a bit of a workaholic was usually pretty jovial and easygoing.
Peter Gabriel is and was and will always be Genesis. My favorites will always be Foxtrot and Selling England. Phil was a great drummer. Listen to Rush /Losing it. My heart goes out to these people. For you the blind that once could see.😢
Okay, but don't forget: since Peter left Genesis, Tony was the main composer, not so much Phil. "T.O.T.T." and "W&W" was the best examples, for that the band was further playing best ProgMusic! Well, Tony Banks also was a composer of the later Pop-Genesis-records, next to Phil and Mike.
Banks is the centre of Genesis, always was. When you think of a Genesis song, it`s the keyboard layers and masterful harmonies of Tony that comes to mind first, even if you initially don`t think so.
If there was any bad blood between some Genesis members, it was Peter and Tony and later Steve and Tony that were at odds with each other. And even Peter and Tony seemingly have put their differences aside, considering that it was Peter who gave the prog rock god award for Tony in 2015, so people are finding these "tensions" out of thin air.
You often see guests come on stage with musical acts for a song or two. Now just imagine had Gabriel came on stage for a song or two at that last show. The place would've lost its collective mind!
Im glad they split. Both singers brought us greater better music after that. I love Peter Gabriel's work after Genesis. Likewise for Genesis and Phil Collins.
Phil Collins did not take over -- if you mean that he took over control of the band. He did take over the lead vocals though. A lot of people don't really understand the inner dynamics of Genesis. People often assume, rightly or wrongly, that whoever does the most singing does the most songwroting and bosses the rest of the band around. That was never the case with Genesis.
Yep, it was Mike and especially Tony who wrote most of the stuff. For example, when you hear "the Genesis chord", a major chord with the 4th in the bass in their music, you can bet that it`s Tony`s creation most of the time.
Phil took over? Mike and Tony were the ones steering most of the music. Phil and Peter never had any beef. If anything, Tony and Peter were the main ones that would have disagreements, and those were civil and polite from what I understand. Sick of the Phil hate. These guys were and are still great friends and all talented musicians that contributed greatly to Genesis, great solo and side projects, and music in general! Every member!
I don’t think either of them has a particularly big ego. Phil Collins had no pretensions of stepping into Peter’s shoes - their front man style, back then at least, was so totally different. But once Phil went front he really grew into the role. And as for Peter, he was Mr. Creativity and I think ‘The Lamb…’ proved that he needed to go his own way, because the other band members wanted to contribute but Peter was dominating, which definitely caused some tension within the band at that time.
In his own right Peter had a different musical direction. The earlier albums of Genesis are that as his solo career. Probably was the best thing for the band all around and then as musicians and people.
They had reached at point at the, " Lamb Lies Down", tour. That people just saw it as Peter Gabriel and his backing band. Something had to be done. Peter had had enough. He departures breathed new life into Genesis.
Not exactly the same thing but I remember when Iron Maiden replaced Paul De Arno with Bruce Dickinson..... kind of took it to another level even though the bands would have been astronomical regardless I believe.
Phil Collins didn't want to take over as the lead singer when Peter Gabriel left. It was the other members of the group who pushed him to do it. In fact Phil was so comfortable being the drummer. He only agreed to be the singer originally if he could sing from the drumming position
I have seen an old interview of Peter shortly after leaving. He mentioned that, as the band gained popularity, he had a hard time taking more creative risks. He was worried about how it could negatively impact the others if it didn’t work. As a solo act, he didn't feel like he had to worry about his bandmates. The risk would be his alone. Seems to have worked out well for both parties.
Phil was much bigger as it appeared at the end
Creative differences are common but parting on good terms and maintaining a relationship over the decades is something to be acknowledged

Not sure if this was the same interview but I also heard him say Phil was more sympathetic, as he was also a dad by that stage. The fact Peter maintained a personal and professional relationship with Phil after leaving the band also aligns with this.
I love ❤ love Peter Gabriel, his musical compositions, and his almost gravelly singing voice - especially when he belts it out. He's a genius.
Love Phil and Genesis great musicians, creativity, still awesome
unique icon of music, rock and roll with his own unique flavor.
I love Genesis! Feels like we are living Suppers Ready & this being the year of the Dragon I’m just waiting for them to show up “shimmering silver head of wisdom looking at me” lol❤
They are both amazing
Right on
Exactly.
Until after Duke :)
"Can you tell me where my country lies?"
Said the unifaun to his true love's eyes. It would have been so legendary to hear that one last time from Peter and the whole band.
Peter. Your video with Kate Bush, Don’t Give Up, is the best and sexiest video I’ve ever seen. So simple and just perfection. I saw you in Cincinnati in maybe 1986? Keep it going brother.
Both iconic stars ⭐️ ⭐️🏆🏆🥇🥇
It's just amazing to thing that a single band had so many mesmerizing talents. Peter, Phil, Tony, Mike and even Steve to me are unique musicians on their own, and the combination of their efforts will stay as an unique adventure in the history of rock.
Wow its almost like a yesterday I went to a concert of Genesis with Eugene and Peter walked out had no clue who he was 😀 very young nieve girl i was. 1977 I believe
saw these guys at their peak in 72 and 74 in b'ham England, just sublime musicians, young too
The exit of Peter from Genesis was unexpected and traumatic. But the the Band suffered its greatest loss when guitarist extraordinaire Steve Hackett left.
This
BS
Given Phil's condition, Gabriel should've volunteered to be in the last tour, covering vocals with Phil, helping with songs and parts too tough for Phil now.
Great to know. Hope Phil Collins is doing well. Great band in the British history of music👍
Phil was great with Genesis but nothing will ever replace the original Genesis Peter Gabriel years. If you were listening to UKProg at this time, you know exactly what I mean. From America 🫶🏻
Which one? South? Central? North?
I would assume USA, I also assume you assumed that, and Im fairly certain both of my assumptions are correct.
Love them both
The differences were between Pete and Tony
When interviewed together after the last show, Phil made a joke that he kept hearing someone from the audience yelling out and requesting “Suppers Ready”. 😂
Both good people
I always would have loved a tour like Billy Joel and Elton John only with Gabriel and Collins singing one another’s songs
Great post!!
From everything that I've read, Phil was actually the most supportive band member when Peter left. And Phil played on some of Peter's solo albums, so it hardly seems like there was ever any bad blood between them.
Two of the greatest Frontmen ever
Not
Only one......peter
Any chance of a come back? Please...
Gabriel should have took the mike for the last ever Genesis tour. That would have been worth seeing 😊
One think In would have liked to see was Peter and Phil doing an album together without the other Genesis bandmates. Their vocals together were magic.
One of the most tired arguments is that Phil Collins ruined Genesis and led them to pop.
Two facts:
1. Genesis' first album was a blatant attempt to break into the pop genre.
2. Phil wanted to turn the band into an instrumental act like Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Bonus fact: I have grown to love every song that Genesis did… Though admittedly some more than others 😊
A few extra points:
Genesis didn`t instantly transform into pop.
@patepulkkinenvtec2403
Gosh, I'm agreeing with you repeatedly!
❤❤
Genesis was and will likely always be the Banks & Rutherford show. Gabriel, Hackett, and Collins all left because of this simple truth. Doesn't mean they were bitter; they just accepted Genesis for what it is.
Gabriel is a classy guy. He killed it as a solo artist.
I like that he’s not jealous of Phil’s success. Trick of the tail and wind and the wuthering were the peak of genesis
My opinion.
@@albertvinyes4951The sales disagree.
@@patepulkkinenvtec2403
Wind and Wuthering is my favorite, too!
Greatest band ever!
They didn't really cross into pop from progressive until Steve Hackett left.
Genesis started progressive and went more pop.
self righteous brother🤣 (there's a harry enfield skit "self righteous brothers" and its just like this thread)
@@mikelmartHave you ever listened to Pink Floyd in the Syd era ?
@@watkinsrory Yes I have but they're relatively different in the sense where Floyd didn't pursue and conquer commercial success quite like Genesis. Floyd's career meandered quite a bit, never quite following my original statement.
@mikelmart 🤣🤣🤣. Pink Floyd have one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Genesis have sold about 120 million records. Pink Floyd have sold over 200 million. They are one of this biggest selling bands of all time. Dark side of the moon is the 7th most sold records of all time. Genesis doesn't have one in the top 20.
Edit
Genesis top album Invisible touch 1.4 million copies.
Pink Floyd top album Dark side of the moon 45 million copies.
I listened to them as a band and separately
😊👍
Solo Peter, and Phil leading Genesis was the way.
Class
Whatever the reason, his leaving gave us ‘Solsbury Hill’.
Pete was in the studio when Phil was recording some of his biggest hits in the early to mid-eightees, so they were clearly great friends after Pete left Genesis.
Supers ready a master piece.
They were more pissed off that Hackett left
Why do we need highlighted CAPTIONS??
Because we are all pushing 70 and have cataracts I expect.
@@Tailspin80 We have captions as an option from the menu
@@saintetienne755 Yes, but you don’t get the all important highlights in Trump-themed colours.
@@Tailspin80 huh?
I mean, Phil and Peter did work with each other again in Peters Melt Album Phil providing drums for songs like Intruder and Biko
It was one thing PG requested when he left. That he and PC worked together on projects.
Phil took over…. And then it was MEGA. 💥
Peter leaving Genesis was the best thing for the band.
Peter Gabriel is and was and will always be Genesis. My favorites will always be Foxtrot and Selling England. Phil was a great drummer. Listen to Rush /Losing it. My heart goes out to these people. For you the blind that once could see.😢
Love them both beauutiful singers ❤❤❤
Peter should re release his single Blood of Eden featuring Sinead O'connor. Best song he's ever done in my opinion.
Peter Gabriel was the centre of what Genesis was. Phil Collins made something else out of it. Different band.
Gabriel's Genesis is the only one I listen to. Collins' Genesis; with the exception of maybe 2 songs is pop catered to the masses
@@tortoiseslayer8that's a very ignorant and one-minded reasoning
Genesis is about Collins and Banks
Pete's a Genesis! Love all of his work , but nothing after the album, So.
The 2 albums that I love in particular are
Security and Passion!!
Good to know.
I love Peter Gabriel but Phil Collins really brought Genesis somewhere cool
Gabriel refused to let anyone else help write lamb lies down album. They were like WTF!?
They stayed friends. Phil Collins played drums on Peter Gabriel’s third solo album.
Gabriel era Genesis is untouchable.
Phil played on several of Peter's solo albums.
Musico talentoso
Phil Collins didn't want to take over as the lead singer when Peter Gabriel left. It was the other members of the group who pushed him to do it. In fact Phil was so comfortable being the drummer. He only agreed to be the singer originally if he could sing from the drumming position
Kinda funny how both of the long-lasting vocalists for Genesis were originally drummers who eventually found themselves being lead singers
Peter Gabriel, a true gentleman, class, an intellectual, compassionate and one of the legions of progressive rock.
There was never any bad blood, who thought that was either a “hack” or knew nothing of the band Genesis, Peter or Phil.
