Thanks for the review! Yeah I'm going to buy this one, or at least on from this new range. I'm just getting back into electronics after a 20 year hiatus(!) and want to buy my first scope. I've spent a couple of weeks looking at all the options under $1000 (mostly well under..) and this seems to be the best choice as far as I can tell. Have looked thoroughly at the full (lower) range of Siglent, Hantek, Owon, Atten, Uni-T & Rigol etc (and some of those are just re-branded scopes from original manufacturers of course), also looked at PC based and a few hand-helds. Watched dozens of video reviews & read heaps of opinions regarding build quality, features, connectivity, quirks, hacks etc. Would probably get this even with 2 channels. Another 2 is just a bonus! Thanks again - I think your review probably decided it!
Nice review. I just got one of these DS1054 . Not too happy that they lock out the record feature after 30 hours of the unit being on. However, as indicated by other posters, there is an easy hack for getting the full function of the scope
I've been browsing and doubting. Coming across your video where you seem to use it very naturally made me decide this is the scope for me. So thank you for that! Also, is that an original mac standing in the background?!
Does the scope have an ethernet port? If so, have you tried connecting it to your network? I *think* the scope is supposed to have a web server built into it so if you have the IP address, perhaps you can view the screen with a web browser.
Well, I suppose there will not be a response. The scope DOES have a built-in web-server, but the screenshot is NOT served up via the server. The screen shot CAN be accessed remotely via VISA commands. I have coded it up and use it regularly to capture screenshots.
Curious: You say that you haven't tried applying the hack, but yet you demonstrated decoding SPI, which according to what I am reading, is not included in the base model (it's an add-on.) Did you buy that option, or is it actually included and the documentation I viewed incorrect?
All the features are initially available for a limited amount of time - I think it's 10 hours of use or something like that. If you want to continue to use them permanently, you have to buy each option you want.
No sarcasm was intended. I was researching the unit and wasn't sure if I would get the SPI features. Thanks to Steve's video, I decided on the 1074Z. Thanks again, Steve!
Yes, I did! I had never owned a scope prior to purchasing the 1074Z, but after speaking with some knowledgeable people, I pulled the trigger. I am very happy with it. I've owned it for roughly a year or so and have yet to explore all its features, but I imagine that it will meet my needs for the long term. I also had occasion to contact Rigol tech support with a question, and they were very helpful. Highly recommended.
Yes This is Good Review, by the way does any one know is it possible to hack DS1000Z (1054Z /1074Z / 1104Z)series to Higher bandwidth as like as DS1052E ? please inform the complete way or post a link please . i need to buy one of DS1000Z series Oscilloscope.
Why do you upload a 480p Video which is so blurred that I cannot even read what is on the screen? It is impossible to recognize the 7F in the SPI data. This should definitely be a HD video. Also your lighting is not clever. The scope is so over-iluminated that the screen appears dark.
Thanks for the review!

one of the best products money can buy....
Great info! Anything you don't like about this scope? I'm seriously considering buying one..,
After doing a bit of research, This is going to be my first Oscilloscope. I heard it is even hackable up to 200 MHz.

Yes hack is super easy and works great.
Really nice review. The 50Mhz Ds1054z just came out. I'm thinking getting one of these :)

Very nice. How many probes do you get with the unit?
It comes with four probes.

scopes not much use if the software is locked out by blackmail.
