i think quite interesting is that all choosing the bat used it more like a shortsword. They swung it like a bat, yes. But with a bat you would normally not hold in in front of you because you have less time for swinging it back and then down on your opponent. You need it in a position ready to hit your opponent critically. To actually injure your opponent and not let him get to stab you, you would need to hit quite hard on important parts of the body so the knifeperson cant continue his attack, which he is defenitly able to when just hit lightly.
Thanks for another interesting video! Much would depend on the individual and the exact dimensions of the bat. They make small bats for fishing where someone can administer a quick kill to a fish with a knock on the head. These bats are very lightweight and just a little bit shorter than the one you used. They would be a good example of what you were using. Some softball bats are also fairly thin and lightweight. They would be longer than the bat you used and would be very effective even when wielded with one hand. Some of the larger baseball bats might be too heavy to use effectively with one hand. That would be a different kind of fight.
I'd also wonder about using a bat as a shortened staff. A two-handed approach (like a baton) would mean you could defend and attack from either end, and easily transition to a large swing.
The problem with sacrificing the arm is that you do not know, how exactly your body will react to the trauma of perhaps getting both bones in the lower arm shattered. It might be directly debilitating. Anyway - quite interesting again. Did something similar with two sais against a European long sword a few years ago. Of course, the sais often come in pairs AND you can use them to hook.
@@kanetao Not necessarily. At least, battle and fight descriprions say so. Depending on the makeup of your neural pathways it can als drop and the trauma might even stop your heart.
Another issue is how solid the hit is. A glancing blow that shatters the elbow and part of the forearm, and you should still be able to charge in. But if it hits you solidly on the elbow and snaps your humerus, you're not gonna be able to charge in. Getting hit like that is like running into a wall, it'll stop you dead in your tracks and make you stumble back; and it's not even a matter of the pain, just how much force it suddenly imparts.
That's what I was thinking too. Besides that trying to block a metal bat as someone swings might work but I think more often than not the person swinging is trying to put damage into you so your hand/fingers are gonna be crushed.
Just a little insight from Filipino martial arts. For a blunt weapon like a bat to hit hard it's mostly about speed, not distance traveled. Speed can also be created by arcing attacks. A skilled stick fighter can throw powerful attacks the same way a whip or the one inch punch generates power
Another good training session 👊🏻 personally I would choose the knife even though it limits your range and maybe a real bat will be heavier and also slower to swing
I think it also matters that the guys whose chose the bat were both taller than the knife wielder, which means they also have a naturally longer reach, further compounding their range advantage.
I would prefer the bat or a baton, small staff against a knife. In a knife attack situation, the staff is much better for self defende, specially if you use Kali and Silat martial arts.
That prop bat is closer to a real baton than a real baseball bat Which is fine by me. I always wanna see a more realistic showdown of the Donnie Yen vs Wu Jing fight scene in SPL Killzone, see how it gonna play out And i got it here. Greatly appreciated
Great video, and quality content! For me it gives an idea of how useful or not an expandable baton or bat can be agaist a knife with the right training. And none of that BS about catching the knife hand
So an adult baseball bat is longer and heavier. More importantly it can be used two handed like a staff for thrusting attacks as well as double-ended attacks.
It does knot need to be a heavy baseball bat: even a light escrima stick will serve as well. Surely in this kind of fight distance, timing are the most important things... and a longer reach is always welcome! 👍 Thank you for this video and your mind open to experiment: it's fun to train this way and it teaches a lot.
really appreciate your content! what do you think about inviting some longsword figher once again? it's really interesting to watch japanese schools of swordsmanship vs HEMA
The problem with every Kendo people I have sparred with is they all stop their attack at the front, they do not follow with the cut. Which is make a lot of mistakes when they use different weapons.
The knifeman was too intenta on attacking the body. I think that once he had hold of the bat hand, he could hace attacked the arm to neutralizar the weapon, them get freedom to finish the opponent.
If someone has a knife, and you have armor, you're still not safe. The single most salient point I ever learned in jujutsu was that someone that's good with a knife will know how to conceal it and you're not leaving without getting wounded, unless you can run faster than they can. I wouldn't engage anyone with a knife with anything shorter than a nuntibo or eku.
When I was sparring amongst my friends, I was regularly forced to fall back to my sidearm knife, and most of the time, it served me better as a projectile
The weight of a bat is not that much to make it cumbersome in a fight. A wooden bat weighs maybe 29-36 ounces. Aluminum bats weigh even less. In the video the guy with the bat looks more like he’s trying to fence with it rather then using as a clubbing weapon. The bat has huge advantage. It can be held with two hands giving it much more power and with size simply turning wrist adds more powerful impact. It’s disadvantage is if missed with swing you can be open for counter attack. Also the knife is faster and can cut. If you are not trained the bat is easier to attack and defend and it’s not even close. For someone who is trained the difference is smaller but the bat still has the advantage. On a side the size of the “bat” makes it look more like he’s fighting with a baton which be a very different weapon then a bat
I think a bat is stronger, because at worst, you'll break some bone in the opponent before he beats you, and at best you'll break him too much that he can't fight you back.
Getting the feels of the second last fight scene with Wu Jing from Donnie Yen's SPL all over again watching this, although that was with a police baton which is probably less awkward to swing, twist and turn at speed than a real baseball bat.
Light taps with a bat, metal or wood, to someone’s head is going to hurt. Not quite sure why light hits don’t count, you can flick your wrist and get the bat to move very quickly over a small distance.
some bat alloys are pretty light aluminm etc how about teating it like a baton shuveeling to thwe lrft or right or in circles while swining left and right
The plastic bat was always going to be better since the taller fighters chose chose it though did they have to use 2 hands with the bat though since it was light plastic 1 hand Technique would of been better since the free hand could then be used to stop or disarm the knife
I apologize, but a fighter with a longer weapon (bat) who does not have the skill to take advantage of the weapon's length is not good fighter. In our sparrings longer weapon wielder attacks legs (knees) or hands (especially with weapon) much more often than a head or other body parts.
Dagger is so dangerous. If you can not knock them down, they will just kill you. So if you use bats or sticks, you should make sure every strike would disable the guy with knife,
Apparently you did this just like this is a scored sport. The Bat man hit the knife girl first, then the knife girl stopped, this is ridiculous if you just do it in real fightg, knife guys would not stop until you knock them down. You hit them first doesn't mean they don't have the ability to stab you.
With a real, heavier bat, trying to hit someone with such short swings wouldn't have cause much harm. To cause damage with an heavier bat, the swings would have to be longer, making the attacks much slower. And the guy with the knife, should have shortened the distance with his body and stabbing with short thrusts, instead of leaning his body forward and trying to stab with an outstretched arm.
There's no significant speed difference, bats are top heavy so it's gonna help you follow through. You can thrust with them, smashing a person face. Me and my friend took a wooden bokken and hacked through a tree limb that was thicker then it was. If you understand how to use the bats momentum you can use its own wieght to carry you through multiple swings.
@@stevenoconnor3256 That is not how physics work. A bat being top heavy will make it more difficult to recover in between swings. A well balanced baton or Dan Bong, would be much better as a weapon.
