    With the Nyx Reissue out now this is a great resource for what was possible with the original, thanks!

    still my favourite synth demo ever, when i first started looking at hardware synths and saw the dreadbox then this video i couldnt stop replaying it and had to get one as my first ever synth

      @skrapadelix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. Do you still have your Nyx? I sold the one in the video, regretted it and ended up buying another last year. It’s a bit awkward to use at times but the sound is worth it to me

      @bigmanlizard7326 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skrapadelixI sold it and have been thinking about getting one back, that's what made me remember this video haha.
      I did find it a limiting synth but what it could do was just an almost unmatched sound
      The v2 looks interesting but to my ear the reverb doesn't seem as nice despite additional parameters and that was a big part of the nyx to me and probably anyone

    • @skrapadelix
      @skrapadelix  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigmanlizard7326 yes the v2 reverb is not as useful or characterful as the OG. Even the Nymphes reverb sounds better to me than the v2. To be fair, its bandpass filter is sweet and I like the larger form factor as well. V1 feels a bit cramped

    skrapadelix - This is fucking briiliant mate. Ive had the NYX for a couple of months, but probably only done a few hours fiddling with it - not too intuitive for me to be honest, as I've been used to the traditional subtractive synth layout over the years like on a Roland etc, but I really admired and embraced this approach on the NYX, as they've had the balls to change the traditional subtractive synthesis paradigm.
    The point - After watching your video, you have made me want to persevere with the NYX as it really does sound beautiful in its own way and does what many breakaway synths can't achieve, and that is a likeable tone with its own character.
    Just a question, on your demo @ 4:12 & 9:07 I can hear two separate oscillators, one pulsing a bass sequence and one playing a sequenced lead part similar, if not the same as the bass part. Is this 2 separate parts, i.e. multitracked, or was it the 2 Oscillators un-synced playing together?
    Anyway, top demo mate :)

    • @skrapadelix
      @skrapadelix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey, BMC thanks for the kind words. It's not exactly the easiest synth to use is it? To answer your question, everything in the demo is one take, with no overdubs because I'm a lazy sod and can't arsed with computers. The sort of 'dual timbre' patch is as follows if you're interested:
      VCO routing = Split, VCF routing = Even, Mod routing = Odd.
      VCO1 at 32’, sawtooth, with no glide
      VCO2 at 8’, triangle with glide at about 10%
      Dial the filter cutoff right down to zero, resonance about 20%, set the VCA to hold.
      Modulator 1 should be set to loop with rise=0, fall about 40%, level = 35%.
      Modulator 2 set with loop set to off, rise to about 15% and fall to around 70%, level about 40%
      Play a low note and the bass should pulse slowly, keep it held and with another finger, play the second oscillator.
      You should now get a gliding lead voice playing over the bass. Add reverb to taste. It's a but fiddly to set up but sounds really nice. Cheers!

      skrapadelix - Thanks for the detailed reply, thats very decent of you to spend the time to write the settings out.
      I just love setting the 2nd Osc glide too, but I've never tried it duophonically yet.
      Thanks for the advice, I'll print that out !
      All the Best :)

    Nice! Can you tell me how the settings where on the part that started @2:13? How is the paraphonic setup? I mean it looks like I can hear OSC1 only playing even if I do not hear OSC2 (and I would suspect at not playing a high note the both OSC would sound together)? I have the Erebus and would like to get the Nyx too, so I hope my question makes sense.

    • @skrapadelix
      @skrapadelix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Mark. Setting the Mod Root to "Split" assigns each filter its own dedicated modulator. Using these as single-shot AD envelopes makes the Nyx behave closer to a true duophonic synth than a paraphonic one - although both voices still share the same VCA which can be set to hold. At 2:13, I simply looped VCO 1's modulator and kept the low key held while playing the top line on the second VCO, controlled by its own modulator. Played carefully, the Nyx can then sound almost like 2 single-osc monosynths playing together.

    • @skrapadelix
      @skrapadelix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you! It's purely a personal thing but I've found almost every synth demo in the last 3 years slathered in either Strymon or Valhalla Shimmer, Eventide Blackhole or Mutable Instruments' Clouds. These algos are very beautiful and mysterious, no denying, however in my opinion they tend to make everything sound homogenised and, dare I say it, a bit bland since everyone uses them now.

    • @dirtfriend
      @dirtfriend 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      to follow up on skrapadelix's reply, everything sounds good with strymon effects so it's hard to properly gauge how the synth itself actually sounds.i mean, a 30 dollar casio toy keyboard sounds good with blue sky.

    • @oaoaow
      @oaoaow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      so the reverb that we hear is the onboard one ? no other effects ?

    • @AndresViolencia
      @AndresViolencia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I see your point of course. More and more of these demos are demoing too much of the FX and drowning the synth voice. Nevertheless, these strymon gadgets, used sparingly, are a blessing and provide a level of quality formerly only available in studio level gear.

    • @skrapadelix
      @skrapadelix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a basic ping-pong delay after the Nyx just to widen the output in the stereo field as the onboard reverb is mono only.
