    Tommy I was on random clawhammer music at work today as I'm doing paper work and on you come! Playing this amazing smooth, soothing tune! Again...Thanks for this. What a blessing today. Thank you for bringing the peace that this song immerses the listerner and the player in. Amazing...

      Wowowo! Thank you sooo much for this comment, Dorinda! The idea that this song ended up being listened to by someone who appreciated it out of the blue is just soooooo cool! You're awesome. Cheers! Tom

    This is an incredible tune. So much depth. Dwight is so amazing. I’m still a baby banjo player, but this is on my list to learn. Thanks for sharing this and honoring my dear friend and teacher. The Just Banjo album is just one amazing song after the other. Thanks for sharing this. I guess I’m too late to jump in on learning this with you all. 😂 have a super day

      @@TomCollinsBanjo I'm considering joining you all on Banjo Quest. Dwight had been giving me lessons the last two years. I am so grieving the loss of one of my best friends and my wonder teacher. I need to keep moving on. I need to be with folks that really appreciated him and his style. I miss him very deeply and it's not even two weeks. He was a great teacher and wonderful spiritual mentor. He loved Jesus and it was the motivation for all his music. No matter...I hope to find my second banjo home here once I'm ready.

    I've been playing this song for many years, Tom, trying to get all the nuances that Dwight slips in there with limited success. You have captured the essence of the tune (not easy to do!) and, at the same time highlighted the melody with a simplicity that stunned me. A light bulb went off in my head and my playing of the tune has grown a great deal by the insights I got from listening to your version. I am delighted to hear that you are exploring the music of "Just Banjo 99" with your students. A group of us Dillerites helped produce that album after attending one of Dwight's banjo camps in California's Eastern Sierra in, you guessed it, 1999. Really enjoy your music. Bob Thornburg

      Dear Bob: Thank you so very much for this comment. I'm a long-time admirer of yours, and your extraordinary gourd banjos. The "Just Banjo 99" album changed my life. It came out the year I started playing banjo, and I poured over it hour after hour hanging on every phrase. I didn't have a teacher, but Dwight's notes were there for me to study. It opened a life-path for me, and now I play and teach banjo for a living. I still teach from that album with every student because it demonstrates that rhythmic mastery, and simple lines, can create some of the very finest music. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, and I'm so happy you and others produced one of the finest banjo recordings of all time. Cheers to you! Tom Collins

      @@TomCollinsBanjo Well, I didn't realize the connection you've had with Dwight's music for such a long time. He and I go back to the late 80's when he started teaching me banjo at his home in Hillsboro. He invited me to stay with him (we'd never met before) for a week leading up to one of his music camps. It changed my life too. Since then we've spent many weeks together. Last time I visited him was about four years ago. When we first met, his only recorded output was the "Hold On" cassette. Speaking of cassettes, I have extra, never been opened, copies of some pre CD cassettes he made. I think there are some that never got released as CD's and they may contain some content you've not heard. They are "O DEATH", "PAPA" and "RED ROOSTER". Also have an unopened copy of "HOLD ON".
      If you would be interested in having these tapes, I'd like to give them to you. They are just gathering dust around here. If this sounds good to you, email me at gourdbanjo@aol.com with your address and I'll send them off. Sometime down the road you and I need to get together for a couple of hours. I've got tons of Diller stories I need to unpack and I'd like to find out the details of how one can actually make a living doing banjo stuff. Take care. Bob

    Flow is the right word. That piece is wonderful. I'm curious, why weren't you playing over the scoop? Tone maybe?

    • @TomCollinsBanjo
      @TomCollinsBanjo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question, Glen! With these low, slack-strung tunings, I like to build some attack and brightness back in, so I favor playing over the head. There's a point for me where the scoop can be too mellow, and this is one of those cases. Thanks for watching!
