The expression on Steve Martin's face when he was playing was very interesting. You could tell he was really enjoying playing that, and like his mind was somewhere wonderful while he was playing it.
I know from the past that yours is the majority view about the band adding to the effect but for me it’s always the killer. The tension of the troubadour solo is for me the best. When the others join in, the spell is broken and it’s instantly ordinary and my close attention is gone. That man sure can play clawhammer though.
Man, every time I see Steve Martin playing the banjo, my respect for him just keeps going up. I liked him before for his comedy, but MAN, as a musician, I have new levels of respect for him - and envy!!!
So ; your saying ; you liked him less, because he did less. So his respect meter went up after he displayed a better dance, sounds very , conditional respect .Tsk , tsk.
@@clayman1565 Yes, thank you. A lot of people seem to think they automatically have respect and don't understand they have to earn it. And also don't understand how easy it is to LOSE it, and possibly NOT get it back!

well he said, 'Look it up,' : Clawhammer , sometimes called frailing, is a distinctive banjo playing style and a common component of American old-time music. The principal difference between clawhammer style and other styles is the picking direction.
@@blainechappell5383 I've been really wanting to learn those riffs too since I heard him play his tiny desk concert. I didn't realize it was an actual song. I thought it was just clawhammer improv before So Familiar. Let me know if you find tabs for it, I'd appreciate it!
I got to see Steve Martin and Martin Short with The Steep Mountain Rangers. They played this medley and one more number. It was my favorite part of the show. I would've loved listening to Steve Martin and the band play for a couple more hours. I love Martin Short too, but he and Steve sure did a lot of low-brow comedy. The music was the best part.
Nostalgia, longing, love, loss. I have a painting of a dirt road by meadow. A tree arches over the path creating a sorta of frame of the path ahead. I can feel the presence and wonder as if I were in the picture. Reminds me of how the expressions you create bring an image of Un describable images. Who knew a banjo and an old song?
OK, Steve. We already knew that you are an incredibly gifted writer, actor and comedian. Did you have to rub it in and show us that you’re a talented musician as well? Please give us mere mortals a break!😀

actually, Steve Martin was on Johnny Carson in 1975 playing the banjo!!!! 6 years BEFORE the Jerk. just trivia. oh and guess he was playing in 71 also.

saw Steve Martin in 1971, he opened for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Great!!
I hope Steve and SCR release this particular medley on their next album. I could listen to this song loop all day long.
I've FINALLY learned how to play this, and I think I play it daily.
Heck yeah! I love where Prairie Home Companion is going.
That second tune, 'The Great Remember' is one that has stuck in my head (and my fingers, whatever I may be playing) for years.
When the band joins in its a whole other level
I was about to say - who dislikes this? It's gorgeous!
Awesome! So happy this is available on youtube to watch. This is our favorite show
Somewhere, Stringbean is smiling to hear this.

Pretty sure he's in the rock n roll Hall of Fame (or bluegrass, can't remember). Steve Martin is the real deal
