n. the level or point at which one starts to experience something,
or at which something starts to happen or change
THRESHOLD was inspired by the mythology of The Hero’s Journey, a common narrative of stories where a hero embarks on an adventure, overcomes trials and tribulations, and returns transformed. The term was first popularised by author Joseph Campbell, who describes:
"A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man."
This journey, which consists of 17 distinct stages according to Campbell, requires the Hero to cross the threshold from the ordinary world into an unknown world where his transformation begins, and the trajectory of the piece expands on this idea of crossing the threshold, and transformation through varied repetition.
