You should watch the series on airplane crashes, but not enough fuel to save money , to trying to fix a light bulb & not paying attention, to pilot used to only landing with automatic assistance.

hey this movie reminds me of a joke I heard one time! the joke goes like this, two business men where taking a flight, they got on board, and started to drink, the plane was in the air about an hour when the pilot, got on the intercom, and said excuse me ladies and gentlemen we will be in flight for one more hour because number one engine just blow out! so the two business men continue drinking not really paying attention, one hour pass, the pilot come' on the intercom, says ladies and gentlemen, number two engine just blow out we will be in flight for one more hour, so the two businessmen kept drinking getting drunk! one hour passes, the pilot come on again on the intercom, ladies and gentlemen number three engine just blow out, we will be in flight for one more hour, so one of the businessmen look toward the other businessmen, and said, if one more engine blow out, will be stuck up here all day!

18:04 The plane used in the exterior shot was a Mexicana Airlines DC-7, registered XA-LOD on the tail. It was sold to Northwest shortly after filming, then to several other airlines before it was retired in 1967 and scrapped in Miami by 1970.

And every one of the flight control levers had cables that ran to each of the various airplane wings ailerons, rudders and trim tabs. No electric motors were used because too many problems could and probably would occur while in flight. Also, regarding the flight panel gauges, pretty much only coils, resistors, capacitors and diodes were used. That's about as computer-advanced as they were back then.
And, while all four engines were under full power during takeoffs, you couldn't hear the person sitting next to you even if he/her was screaming at you. Truly the ultimate intense flying experience for passengers !
But, when compared to today's Boeing 737 with the average airspeed between 567 and 606 miles per hour and the average airspeed of the DC 7 at 367 mph, you would be traveling in the DC 7 at ONLY a little more than half the speed which means it would take you about twice as long to get to any destination.
Also, modern passenger aircraft travels at an altitude of between 35,000 and 40,000 feet. BUT the DC 7 ONLY traveled at a altitude of about 20,000 feet. That meant that passengers traveling in the DC 7 had a much better view of the landscapes they were flying over.

In screenwriting there is an incredibly powerful and important tool that veteran writers use to maintain suspension of disbelief. Particularly when the storyline requires selling wild plot points. It’s generally termed “writing across the grain.” What it means is that instead of penning dialogue that is completely indicative by the characters’ actions or by the scene itself, the writer chooses more organic utterances that convey emotion indirectly. For example let’s say a husband arrives home early from work. He enters through an unlocked kitchen door. He calls out to his wife. The family dog greets him with another man’s handkerchief in his drooling mouth. We see embroidered initials that are not our heroes. This could intercut with the interloper death defyingly scrambling down a trellis. Carrying his shoes and shirt. When the heroes wife enters the kitchen the husband says “Dammit how many times with the door? You leave it unlatched, Rover gets out. Off he goes every time a breeze pushes.” This conveys the irritation and anger that’s developing between the husband and his likely-unfaithful wife. It gives the audience more than saying “dammit, Helen here I have Arturo’s handkerchief!” By writing across the grain you allow the audience to guess and second guess “what’s going to happen next?” In 1954 “On the Waterfront” introduced American audiences to what the great European Directors were already doing. Then “Best Years of Our Lives” continued the technique. This film is still holding onto the pre-“Waterfront” writing style. This was due partially to so many film writers who came up through writing radio plays. Where indicative dialogue is necessary. Anyhow it’s great to see some of these characters who we know from huge iconic roles doing something different here.
