After test drove MG4 & Dolphin, my conclusion on MG4: +Faster AC charging (base variant aside) +Fast DC charging curve +No 1 sec throttle delay, throttle is more linear, overall feels more natural to drive in terms of throttle & braking +Regen can set to low (Dolphin's Normal mode is a pain when reversing on a slope) +No motor whine sound in cabin +Better handling +Rear seats feel more comfortable to seat in +More conventional design, inside & outside (can be subjective) +Doors feel more solid +Feels like driving a tall crossover when sit inside although it is a conventional hatchback -Only base variant gets LFP battery -Not as comfortable (the 18 inch low profile tyres could be the blame, as UK market gets 17 inch and reviews generally praised the good ride) -No power tailgate (if it is a dealbeaker to you) -No rear aircon & aircon controls embedded in touch screen (Dolphin also the same) -A bit too wide to navigate in narrow city roads Overall it's a better package.
Because MG4 is mainly for performance and handling But BYD Dolphin also have advantages: - More durable - Safety - Easier to drive - Features - Technology - Practical Also, BYD Dolphin beats MG4 standard and MG4 Lux Besides that, even BYD Dolphin and MG4 as both are different categories
I'm an owner of mg4 . I agree with @@zackzack6715. MG4 is somewhere in between dolphin and atto3 . And it's quite difficult to compare a rwd vs fwd too . I agree the the rear being too dark . I had to install a touch light to brightened it up . As for the infotainment, this is quite subjective. I like the small screen and driving experience over large screen anytime. It's not too big nor small .
Been driving Lux model for 2 months now. No regret. Go test drive to feel it. One Pedal Driving(OPD) on MG4 works perfectly where OPD not available in all BYD models.
The standard lacks reverse camera, blind spot monitor, and RCTA. These are deal breaker else it would be the perfect daily driver. The rest runs on NMC batteries and as mentioned by Hafriz in the video, brings back the 80% charged NMC battery range to similar ballpark of that standard version.
The exterior body design looks interesting, although literally many Chinese made cars seems to look all alike, in my view the interior design looks very much like an afterthought, not much effort has gone into a better interior design to compliment the exterior.
It is a crime to have the touchscreen that laggy in 2024 EVs when almost all of the controls are placed in it. What a shame. What a scam. Just imagine after several OTA updates down the road, is it gonna be any faster? Or at least maintain its performance? Gosh this is unforgivable.
Have been using MG4 Extd for 3 months. Never regret. Yes, the interior looks boring, but all are practical & usable. For the aircond setting, u can control it at the steering wheel. You just have to set it in a favourite setting in HU. HU also will have an update soon, just like neighbouring country
Buy MG or BYD will be lesser worries when comes durability and also going to service center. Buying Smart either #1 or #3 makes me even worried especially got caught fire from Smart 😢
MG4 mainly for performance and handling Dolphin mainly for durable, safety, technologies and features Besides, BYD Dolphin and MG4 unable to compare as both are different categories
im just wondering, why the entry level EV is using 17 or 18 inches wheels ? Why not just stick for 16" wheels. Lighter unsprung mass. Cheaper to maintain. more probably save more juice so we could get more range.
my biggest gripe is the door ledge mentioned in 12:21... it is way too thick... and it rubs the back of my calves easy when getting out normally. It annoys my shorter wife even more. A closer look shows that the additional cladding body kit is installed that makes it wider. arrggg
Because most Malaysian believe later those fancy colours will be hard to sell later and low resale value. That’s why they chose boring colour like grey and silver.
MG4 is long wheelbase version aka B+/C segment while BYD Dolphin is normal wheelbase version, which is totally B segment/advanced level of A segment so can’t compare
It has good driving dynamics and good handling but suspension is rather stiff. Maybe it shouldn't be fitted with 17" wheels. Oh ya...the camera resolution (for reversing etc) is pretty bad.
I own an MG in Indonesia. From this experience I won't touch a Chinese car in the near future. Quality is questionable, service staff not really familiar with the car and MG Headquarters is not helpful at all. I regret that I bought a MG😪
All car brands have problems. Nothing is perfect. But still safer than buying Japanese cars with cheating scandals where durability results for Japanese cars have failed
@@BrandonLee-ls1oo agree. I don't mind if there are issues with the car. The problem is that the Indonesian service is not well trained and the Sales staff does not care at all. Even with 5 years warranty you are lost because MG ignores it
Nah man, personally I believe he speaks for most Malaysians too. I rarely saw this model on the road. Also, I don't understand why MG didn't go participate in EV expo yesterday to promote their cars. I was there and looking for them but it felt like they're not serious to sell their product or to give a fierce competition to other brand.
I find him to be super objective n lack of bias despite being a Dolphin owner. Its rare to find such objective person like Hafriz. His review is very well weighted and smell of no bias at all. Very impressive.

Tq Hafriz for such thorough review. Almost forgot the mg4 still using nmc battery. One of important points to be considered when buy EV cars.

blind spot is skill issue tbh

Thank you for a comprehensive and honest review.
My pick would be the Lux. Decent range and fairly affordable road tax. And decent price too.

16" wheels less bumpy too.
I think it needs wider tyre to handle the mess amount of torque
But MG4 only compares with Smart #3 but not BYD Dolphin. BYD Dolphin is B segment and MG4 is B+ segment
Thanks I’m buying the XPower
Better than Smart #3
Delusional. Please go see a healthcare professional
Highly recommend this British car
British??
No longer British. Currently own and produce by Chinese.
British chinese. Yes there is such a thing! 🤣😂🤣😂
This is a Chinaman car
Same as proton, no longer Malaysian right😂
How does it drive compared to Mini SE and Dolphin ER? Tested the later 2 but not the MG. thanks.
But BYD Dolphn and MG4 aren’t compare as both are different categories. MG4 can only compare with Smart #3
Yeah BYD Dolphin is B segment and MG MG4 is B+ segment
Hafriz, is rear seat space okay?
Agreed Lux is best for me as primary car

Most thought dirty marks on grey and silver car tend to be less obvious. Most urban population hasn't been very hardworking in car washing I suppose.
EV will depreciate sharply due to cost of battery replacement after the warranty. Basically its major cost is the battery pack.
Agree with @dzat.... battery life is the major killer for resale, no relation to color.... therefore might as well get a nice striking color...😊
Look at Myvi Axia and Beza best selling cars with many colours.
The MG4 tail light design is quite similar with the HiPhi X.
So, ICE MG would be bring into Malaysian market or not? Or they only sell EV MG models?
I was told last week by my attractive sales girl they'll be bringing ICE models in soon, like later this year.

They definitely will.
In a nutshell, the car looks sporty. From the outside, only.
Why is it in this review you start with negative then into the positive? Other car review you don’t do that.
I use the exact same format and flow for all my reviews, covering both positives and negatives. Not exactly sure why you'd perceive it as different.

Chinaman proton as well
