Garmin EchoMap UHD 64cv Active Captain and NMEA2000 Setup

  • The new Garmin EchoMap UHD is an amazing fish finder and chart plotter. Those features seem alot easier to obtain useful information. When I was in the market for one of these devices, I was most interested in how Active Captain is setup, and how to tie the Garmin device into a NMEA2000 network. I was able to connect my Yamaha F200 engine through the NMEA2000 network and ultimately read the data points that the engine is automatically setup to send.
    I also will demonstrate how to setup your Garmin EchoMap UHD to custom display the data that is most important to monitor on your vessel.

    I just watched the above video on NMEA2000, very informative. I'm new to boating and will soon take delivery of a new Yamaha powered 22 ft DC. I ordered the NMEA2000 backbone and am anxious to better understand how it works. Looking forward to more on this topic. John Cambridge, MD

    This is a great video - but I have an important question! Is it permissible to power up the Garmin and do this lengthy procedure (I have the same unit) with the transducer OUT of the water?? I thought it would overheat/burn out the transducer!

    • @SpeedingMedia
      @SpeedingMedia  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question and the honest answer is, I don't know! I did the whole video with the boat sitting in my garage. I never even gave it a thought that running it out of the water could be bad. It's been 4 years with it and I've never had a problem.

    • @frankschannel2642

      @@SpeedingMedia I just did it (THANK YOU!) and also did not have a problem. The Facebook wisdom says so long as you do not invoke the SONAR or other functionality that utilizes the transducer (i.e sends power for pulses) all is well. I felt the transducer several times while creating the wi-fi network and updating, and it never got warm...so I think we have our answer. Thanks again so much!!

    Any chance you might know why when I'm in navigation mode on my 64cv i can't zoom in closer than 12 miles without the map going blank? I've updated the software and used ActiveCaptain to download the newest charts, but, still can't see anything on my map when zooming in under 12 miles. Help?

    • @SpeedingMedia

      It's been a few months since I installed it, but I'm pretty sure it did come with a long data cable to plug into the backbone. They're pretty inexpensive either way though.

    Thanks, I came here looking for the same info you we’re looking for. I’m new to boating and like you want hours on the dash(the dealership installed a meter under the cowl). I have an Echomap UHD 74sv. One question, that is not absolutely clear. It sounds like the transducer still plugs into the back of the Garmin and the NMEA 2000 plugs into the power port. I was thinking that all the devices plugged into the bus. But now that I think about it, it makes sense that the transducer remains directly into the Garmin.

    • @SpeedingMedia
      @SpeedingMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll have to check to be sure. My boat is still in winter storage so I won’t be able to put eyes on it for a few more weeks. But...if I remember correctly, the transducer plugs directly into the Garmin.
