    This Episode is based on a week of trolling for Striped Bass off of the Southern New Jersey Coast . The bite was on fire and catching double digits of big stripers was the norm. We were targeting an IGFA Line Class Record striped bass on 16# test for lady angler Maureen Klause and were trolling lipped diving plugs and Mojos. Nice Fish! Never used mojos before. Do you see a big difference is success between the white and chartreuse colors?

      Thanks! Mojos are very effective when the fish are feeding on large bunker. As far as color, I always try to keep it half and half in my spread with white and chartreuse. There are days when they seem to have preference and I'll switch a few more to that color.

    I am also looking into the new reels for trolling the Delaware Bay. What reel and size do you think is best for this?

      @CaptainRickyWheeler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carter Dorado It depends greatly on what you will be dragging (umbrellas rigs, lipped divers - like the bomber and Stretch Plugs - or Mojos). If you wan to be sporty and fish light tackle, I really like the Avet SX, Shimano Torium 16 or something similar since they can handle everything fairly easy except for a big umbrella rig like a niner rig. If you want something that can handle it all the Shimano TLD or Tyrnos 20s aren't overkill and can handle anything you will troll for Striped Bass. All of these reels mentioned are fairly inexpensive and will last you season after season (I use all of the above).

    Wow! Did you say 16 lbs test?

    • @CaptainRickyWheeler
      @CaptainRickyWheeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, she needed a 46# striper on 16#. Found a few that were close but we weren't quite able to get the mark that season.

    Great looking trip you guys had there Captain!! I always get a kick out of how the tactics for stripers can be so different across the stripers range. Here on LI I don't know of anyone who drags around 16-24 oz Mojos, I don't even think you'd be able to find a shop that carries them here. The trolling crowd here pretty much rely on the spoons and umbrellas behind wire. For me, I'd rather stay tied to the dock than deal with that wire LOL!! Tight lines to you the rest of the year, cheers, Capt Paul Mandella

      Thanks for the good words, it is funny how different the tactics for stripers are from NC to RI. I am not a fan of the wire line trolling either, but to each their own. It is effective and is extremely popular up your way, especially with the bunker spoons. A few guys down here do the same, and honestly until this season, I don't really know anyone else who were pulling Mojos here either, all of the sudden halfway through the season the local shops started carrying them and the secret was out.

      I use them here and have had great success on them . I combine them with my Bunkerspoons

    What rods do you guys use for trolling for striper?

    • @CaptainRickyWheeler
      @CaptainRickyWheeler  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video we were using 12-25 5'8" rods since that is what we had to work with and were using IGFA Rated 16# test line chasing a record for Maureen on 16# line. For general everyday striper trolling any 15-30 or 20-40 rod and 50# braid works well. It depends on how sporty you want to be as you can get away with less depending on what you plan to drag (I.e. mojos, lipped divers, umbrella/niner rigs).

      +CaptainRickyWheeler what's a cheap good rod for pulling mojos and stretches ? 20-50 lb line will prob have tld 15-20s and some penn 330 reels

      +Tanner Virden As far as cheap rods go, all I can personally say are the Shakespeare Ugly Stiks, they will last - but remember - you definitely get what you pay for - and I would recommend paying a little more for something better. The action is definitely better on middle to higher end rods. I personally love the medium heavy to heavy jigging rods - like the Shimano Trevala Butterfly Jigging Rod. They are inexpensive, very lightweight, great action and enough backbone to pull the lipped divers and heavy Mojos - along with a 50# striped bass, and you can use them for more then just trolling - kind of get a 2 for 1 deal that way.

      +CaptainRickyWheeler I wasn't talking about ugly sticks I shoulda been more specific and said like 100-140 $ range I have 2 trevala a I'll use

    • @CaptainRickyWheeler
      @CaptainRickyWheeler  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tanner Virden Excellent, we are on the same page then. They should work great as long as they are Heavy or Xtra Heavy. Medium Heavy will work too but for the lipped divers they will bend over pretty hard on the troll.

    Hey Capt,
    I'm new to trolling and I have trouble knowing where my baits are in the water... if I'm trolling what is a good weight for 30-40 feet of water? What speed should I go at? I mark schools of bass but I can't tell how deep my baits are.

    • @CaptainRickyWheeler
      @CaptainRickyWheeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go Navy - it takes a little practice but generally we use 16-32 ounce mojos and troll 2-3.5 knots. We tend to get most of our bites closer to the bottom so we let them out at troll speed until they hit the bottom, lock it up for 20 seconds then let it out til you hit bottom again. From here you are usually 2-5 feet off the bottom and if you're marking fish higher you can crank it up to the desired depth

      CaptainRickyWheeler thanks for the quick and helpful response! I will be using this in the Chesapeake hopefully I catch some keepers.

    What # braid would you use to troll these?

    • @CaptainRickyWheeler
      @CaptainRickyWheeler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video we were line class fishing for a record with 16# test monofilament line. On any other day I use 50# braid.
