- Today, we're sharing a project that's close to home: turning an old farm XT500 into a custom MX inspired scrambler.
Phil's last visit and his intrigue with our DT400 Scrambler set the wheels in motion for this project. Focusing on a single XT500, we began a comprehensive build, combining classic and modern elements to create something unique.

Outstanding build. I’ll never understand why Yamaha didn’t resurrect this instead of the SR400. While I love the SR, the XT would have been a huge success.

My first job out of high school I bought the xt500 to go the next town to apprentice as an automotive machinist I loved that bike and you guys did a fantastic job with the xt . Currently I have the xr650l.

Tom I just love the build mate. When I was younger the XT500 was on my list but didn’t get to own one. I had a Honda 500 and it was okay but the Yammie was the bike that I really liked. Good stuff mate 👍🏾

The Yamaha 500 ' Thumper ' is an excellent motor....only 29 BHP, but good torque. Had one in my SR 500.

Back in the late 80's I owned a 82 XT550 of all the bikes I've owned over the years street and dirt that was the most fun bike to ride. It's funny you mentioned thumper because I had a personal plate on mine that said thumper. 😂 I could count on that bike to get me anywhere I wanted to go. That's saying a lot since I live in Washington state USA in the PNW I would ride that bike around mount Rainer all the time.

I'm less than a 40 min ride to the gate! It's so much fun to ride up there and explore all the service roads.

@@PurposeBuiltMoto Yes this is true. Mine have to be capable of extreme off-road. I had one of these back in the day. It saw more dirt than highway. I hated riding on the highway. Still do to this day. 😂

Sorry to ask but can you check your audio mix with headphones if your not already, this one was panned hard right at the beginning (I didn’t check the whole thing with headphones) and I couldn’t listen to it until I put it on something that could go through speakers?

One of the reason older bikes had black painted engines is because it helps radiate heat better, especially given it’s entirely air cooled.

Seems counter intuitive but if you have some details I’d be interested to know more.
@@PurposeBuiltMoto in the very early days of drag racing, cars would frequently have their hoods or front ends painted black literally just so it could dissipate heat better. Like the opposite of reflective heat shielding. I’m confident, I’m not academically trained at all so I wouldn’t take my word for gospel, but I’m confident. Hell I actually have a ‘78 SR500 that’s a low miles surviver I think I’m the third owner, the original owner had it tuned and built by the god damn book (like literally) including the Kerker exhaust, the first performance exhaust ever designed for the bike and put on the market, and sure enough that pipe is painted matte black.

Hello, you could fit an electrical starter from "nuts and bolts dev". made in France the "xstart" is easy to fit and much easier to start!!! there are everal video on youtube.

what i can't understand about many Custom Builders is why do they choose a slow coach single cylinder engine for the build? I had a XT and used it to commute and go off road (slowly) in good weather - but one thing it certainly wasn't, in any shape or form, was fast, I'd be lucky to get 60mph Going Downhill. So as custom builds are not cheap, and looks like it Might go fast - but hold on 'its got a slow, shitty single. And look at the angle of those forks - they won't last a day off road. Well they will because it can't go fast enough to get into trouble. For how much? '

The bike is nice BUT I think calling an Enduro/ dual sport a scrambler is a bit of a misnomer. Honestly the bike really isn't needing to be changed to do what it already did before.
