Just for the record: these guys picked me up whilst hitchhiking in a very wet autobahn service station in Koln, D. It was 1983 ish. They had just hit 100 in the UK charts and were duly celebrating. As you do when you’re a band. I had no money left having fannied around in Europe for 7 months. They took me to the best pub in Delft, NL, paid for food and beer then smuggled me on to the North Sea Ferry back to my hometown of…Hull. My Mum was most grateful and relieved! Legends they are. Buy their stuff! And should they ever get to read this, know that I am eternally grateful. :)
I have had this song - or traces of it - in my head for, literally, decades and now, thanks to Google and TH-cam, I've rediscovered it at last :) One of the very first cassette recordings I made from the radio, on my very first (mono) radio-cassette-recorder, has part of this song on it, and I've never been able to forget the bass line or the guitar riff nor the words "everybody's got a new car": feels like a tiny fragment of broken childhood memory has been returned to me. Thanks so much :)
Only slightly connected - thank you Andy Inkster - but came here because the best album of 1984 is Steeltown by Big Country (IMHO), containing a track also called Steeltown. Please give their Steeltown a listen - I hope you like it.

Such a great song, the band should have experienced far greater success. The bass player is fantastic !
