Mannn Ii've been looking for a GOOD shootout of these types of amps for a looong time. I keep hearing mediocre versions but this one literally hits every single part of what we want; them picking, open low notes, chugs, some higher and lower stuff. All very good at demonstrating the character of each amp in a context that makes sense fro the people who are likely looking this video up. Good job dude. If you wanted to really top to off throw in an ENGL but I don't think many people are using those anymore for this style lol

Nice video thank you because of this video. I just went out and bought an slo 100 with a 4x12 straight cab today. Thank you bro. Keep up the good work. This is who you’re doing it for. Hopefully sweetwater doesnt take for ever. Everything I get lately has a crazy back order. Thats how music is these days. Want something you have to wait. Money isnt good enough anymore. Haha thanks again brother.
My favorite is SLO, 5150, rectifier in general. This demo was heavy and deep chugs so the opposite of the list. The SLO is to articulate for modern chug. The 5150 in the middle with its barking mids. All my options but all 3 amps are 10s (SLO 11 haha) killer and would love to own any of them. Thank you.
Soldano was my favorite, the Peavey was my second favorite. This comparison made me realize I dont like the Triple Rec as much as I thought I did. But I feel like I'd be very happy with the Peavey 5150. To me the Soldano sounded like a more refined version of the 5150 most of the time. I absolutely understand that it's not. But that's just how it felt/sounded to me. LIke a 5150 with a little extra.
1) Soldano 2) 5150 distant 3rd)Retifier. I have owned all three. I miss the SLO, the 5150 was cool. I don't miss the rectifier at all. Sterile, blocky sound. But I don't play nu metal, so there's that
This comment helps makes me think I made the right choice going with my Soldano SLO 30 over a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier? My goal is pop punk, metal, hard rock, blues, pop country
Besides pickups a lot of tone comes from the cab/mic or IR. You can get a lot of different amps to sound the same or very similar if you leave all the other variables before and after the amp untouched.
Good video. However, it is not necesary to say "block letter" in the case of 5150. But, is imperative to know, the version of the dual rec you used for this video. THANX.
Yes it is necessary. Block letter doesn't refer to the 5150 logo. It refers to the EVH block letter logo on the chassis. Which was later changed to a script logo. So yes, you should denote 5150 "block letter" , or 5150 "script logo"
@@mikeflanders1292 both 5150 from PEAVEY... Are the SAME amp. Specially,. NOWDAYS, where the original tubes has been changed for new ones. PEAVEY 5150 desing, circuit, factory, features... It means, the SOUND are the SAME. The amplifier is the SAME.
Hmm, a lot of people in the comment section seem to be saying that the 5150 and Soldano sound similar, somehow to me it sounded like on different demo sections either only the 5150 or only the Mesa sounded very similar to the Soldano, while the other one was different by a lot more. And with all these different scenarios shown I think the winner for me would be Soldano, with the Mesa not being far behind. The 5150 just sounds a bit *too* tight for me, ending up kinda flat compared to the other two. And while the Mesa is undoubtably more full, fatter sounding, it's just personal preference that I think the Soldano sound is the best high-gain tone out there, although I would be crying tears of joy if I were playing either of these. Thanks for this video, this is probably one of the best shootouts I've ever seen and heard, it's very straight to the point and showcases a vide variety of use cases for the amps, amazing job!
Every time I hear the Soldano I'm less impressed. Not because it's not good. On the contrary. It does what it does. And it does it very well. Great shoot out bro.
I don’t own a Mesa. However, I find its particular style bulkiness incredible in the isolated ‘round’. The 5150’s clang would probably be very useful for a mix.
The uncomfortable moment that you watch the isolated portion of this video, realizing you don't like any of these amps. Too muffled, too fizzy. I always felt like the 5150 and DR were fizzy in person but this video confirms it, I'm more of a mesa mark style distortion guy. Just my vibe: as heavy as it gets before turning into angry bees. Thanks for the video tho, well performed and executed!
5150 sounded so much like the Soldano. That’s crazy, I knew the 5150 kinda stole a lot of its circuitry (same with the Mesa) from the Soldano but I didn’t think it would sound that similar. Do you think owning a 5150 I’m really missing out on anything the Soldano has going for itself?
Really depends on what you are looking to do. A boosted 5150 can sound to me just as good as a SLO, especially in a mix no one would know the difference. However, the clean channel and the mid gain tones of a SLO are phenomenal and are miles better than a 5150. Also I’ll say, in the room the two amps sound pretty different. Audio samples on TH-cam videos are directional at best, take it with a grain of salt.
@@ScottBynoe sorry I wasn’t very specific as to what I own. I have a Peavey 6505+ head, and an EVH 5150 III stealth 100w head. Clean channel on both aren’t half bad. The EVH definitely has a more fenderish clean tone. But the 6505+/5150II has a better mid gain sound for lighter genres than the 5150 III stealth. Whenever I try to play the lighter stuff on the 5150 it always has a gained out type of tone. You know what I mean? Like the actual gain isn’t that high at all. It just has that very distinctive 5150 sound to it that the 6505+ doesn’t when the gain is turned down. Hard to describe.
Ya for sure, the 5150 and SLO are closer than I would have expected too. In the room and without the TH-cam compression the SLO is a lot clearer and definitely sounds better to me. But in the context of these TH-cam compressed videos the 5150 is really similar.
Thanks for the comparison. I don't have this amp, but i have plugin slowrunner by Vadim Taranov (slo100), mercuriall mesa rectifire rev G and peavy 6505 by VT too. To my ears, the harmonics sounded best on SLO, the 5150 had the growl and throat of a dragon. I'd hate to spend $3000 more for a SLO over the 5150 which is really close. Soldano is untouchable if you have the coin, but then again Eddie spent a lot of tries before James Brown made what he was asking for. The ne EVH 5150 Iconic, also by James Brown may be the craziest high gain amp I've ever heard. May not be the best for recording or live, but the most fun amp I've ever played.
@@ScottBynoe the rectifier loop is parallel, so if pedals have latency (usually digital pedals have) it may introduce that phase issue! I'm pretty sureI hear it.
Dual Rectifier always the better choice in a metal mix for rythmic part due to it's grit in middle/high frequencies thant allow you to make the sound darker (alias bigger and more space for other intruments) without sacrifing that grit 😉 The others are more refined choice but less effective.
I disagree. Everytime I record with a rectifier I have to boost the shit out of the front end and cut the low end in post as well as boosting the low mids because it sounds too loose and "boomy". It's a great sounding amp for sure but does require the proper attention to get it to sit properly in a mix. The Soldano and 5150 (and whatever other variants) are much easier to fit inside a mix. The biggest challenge however isn't during recording, it's live sessions where you'd have to run an EQ to cut the excessive bottom end and making sure you don't ruin your tone in the process.
The early Dual Rectifier revisions, yes!. The later Rev G 2 ch or 3ch sound entirely different then a SLO or HotRod 100+ head. Also 5150 Block letter used ideas from Soldano, but more gain stages and no choke, bias adjustment pot, etc so they're still variable difference's between the two amps. The Block letter is darker in tone and the SLO are a lot brighter sounding in tone.
