I prefer Hendrix because at times he treated the guitar more like a synthesizer. He also tortured his guitar more for the sake of art in combination with pioneering guitar effects such as the Wah wah pedal , Univibes , distortion pedal , fuzz tone . He also took feedback to another level. Hendrix mastered vibrato touch and invented new guitar sounds like bomb bursts , whistle peels and haunting train sounds like in the song Hear my train a comin. Jimi was funkier and Eddy sounded more eighties " Hair brandish."
if Hendrix had not come along, elevator music would be considered rock music,
legendary rock guitar players took note of Hendrix when he came along and changed their guitar playing
Hendrix is probably the most notable electric guitar legend in history, but this comment is completely ridiculous. Hendrix was not the first to play electric guitar and he CERTAINLY didn't create rock music.
@@Doomzdayxx did not say he created rock music, he combined delta blues with psychedelic,
and could have do more except for his passing, he played the guitar free style using every trick he could think of,
Cream was considered the benchmark to aspire to at the time, that's why Hendrix probably wanted to meet Clapton, to pick up the torch
Doubt it. You act like Eric Clapton didn’t exist. Also shredders like Jimmy Bryant and Joe Maphis existed. Hendrix was amazing but we would still have rock without him. It would just be a different landscape.
@@megazoned3973 LOL don't act like Jimi didn't wash Clapton off the stage at that Jam in London. Man admitted himself he adored him sooooo.. Yeahh
@@jinjalord settle down. The claim was that we would have elevator music without Hendrix. It wasn’t a comparison of Hendrix and Clapton. I’m saying without hendrix we would still have shredders like Ritchie Blackmore and Alvin Lee, Eddie Van Halen. A lot of that came out of country players like Joe Maphis and Jimmy Bryant.
I love you Santana. Favorite guitarist ever.
Wish you'd return to the charts.
Great comment! It’s not about “best” or “greatest”, it’s about favourite. My favourite guitarist is Steve Vai. That doesn’t mean he’s the best
"It gives me joy to be of service."
I wouldn't call Santana Latino...That's European...
this is my dad's favorite artist, and an iconic guitar player... his the Legend man! ^_^
Hendrix vs Van Halen
I have to call it a tie , however EVH is the most successful and influential guitarist ever . Love Hendrix tho
Forget it Jimi WAS AND IS MUCH MORE VERSATLE
tony iommi more influential
I only think Edward blew up and influenced more than anyone ever by being much more popular with guitar albums and equipment. Selling more albums as a guitar hero and that got into more homes.
Joseph Tommy is very influential
Eddie Van Halen changes the guitar's world. Eddie is the best!!!
of course, no doubt...this is absurd.
I love them both but Hendrix is the greatest he changed the game, I must Eddie is a beast tho the first time I heard him was on Beat it by MJ and I fell in love with his style too
Try really thinking about it. Eddie had a much greater impact on the guitar and music as a whole, than anybody ever did. And that includes hendrix. Every aspect of the guitar was flipped on its ass after Van Halen burst onto the scene. The guitars people played were different. The way they played those guitars were different. The sounds people tried to get out of their amps were different. So, Tonally, and technically every band after 1978 began attempting to capture the magic of Van Halen. Most importantly, just eddies generalized innovation inspired generations of new guitarist to raise the bar, and try something a little different. Personally Eddie Van Halen has inspired me to seek the unknown. Experiment with new sounds and techniques. Hoping I would stumble onto something unique, just like Eddie did. The guys mind was a black hole, whose primary content was an endless source of innovation.
At least captulize his name. No age restrictions hu?
Jeff Beck was doing things before Jimi. If fact, Hendrix had said on multiple occasions that he did not realize the full potential of feedback until he saw Jeff with the Yardbird on a U.S. tour. The use of natural, artificial, and pinch harmonics were not even on the minds of any rock guitarist. Beck started there use in rock music in 1963 (pre-Yardbirds) and used them extensively throughout his career. Jeff was a mad man when it came to the use of hammer-ons and pull-offs. No one was using them to the degree he was. In 1980, he said he was tired of always dropping his pick, so he stopped using then and not only reinvented the way he played the guitar but vastly improved on his style. He incorporating the use of the whammy bar to bend notes and the technique of “picking” a harmonic and then use the whammy bar to bend that harmonic into 3 or 4 perfectly pitched notes above and below the sound of the original harmonic. This was even something EVH had to see in person in 1989 when he was back stage while Jeff played “Where Were You”. EVH just paced back and forth shaking his head while Steve Vai stood in amazement. The old dog learned one hell of a new trick. In closing I do have a favorite electric guitarist but since 1960 there has been Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, EVH, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani who have broaden the way a guitar is played.
Don't forget jimmy page
Eddie van Halen always will be forever the best, RIP
Randy was
But both are Metal Gods
@@emmarosacatron7474 truth
Except for Hendrix
To me there is only two guitar “gods” that lived and that goes to King Edward Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix
Randy Rhoads too tf.
👍🏻
Wtf overrated guitarists
C Santana is the only guitar's god is C Santana !!
@@emmarosacatron7474 Oh hell yeah, we can't forget Randy!
Those two i think are the ones who changed the game . You can choose you prefered one but none was more influential than the other. They are probably the two guys who changed the game more than anybody else
EVH hands down. Eddie is the last Guitar God.
@Kenneth Liburd Jimi Hendrix and Dave Gilmour!!!
Jimi Page is still alive
Yea hendrix wayyy bettin halen if he didnt do beat it with mj world wouldnt even know him
Randy Rhoads..... Is Number one.
@@emmarosacatron7474 thats Van Halen
Eddie was to the 70's what Jimi was to the 60's. So fuckin' futuristic! They blended all the greatest guitarists to date and added their own sound & style so much that it couldn't be compared to anything their peers or predecessors did. Never heard 2 musicians praised the way they are.
That's the best way to put it really.
Both guitarists were great, but for me what always impressed me so much about Van Halen is how much he was able to find after Jimi Hendrix. Every guitarist in the world watched Jimi and the guitar boom had been underway for so long by the time Van Halen hit the scene. It is so impressive that he was able to sound like a blues guitarist "from Mars" in 1978. It was such a huge "jump" from even Jimi. Either way, both guitarists had that true spirit energy in their playing which is the most important thing.
The great Carlos Santana. I really like is spiritual musings.
Hendrix’s guitar sounds like it’s going through war
Eddie’s guitar sounds like it speaks different languages with a smile
Santanas guitar sounds like it’s either madly in love or crying in pain
Santana, Hendrix so many guitarist, but the mighty EVH TOOK THE GUITAR TO A WAAAAAAY NOTHER LEVEL. All those other guys stuck to a regular format and they did great , but Eddie added quirky and little fills that were important putting on album wax
dont forget jimi was only 27 when he died...and was in embryonic stages
@@stephenboyes5189 Please remind them!
Lol 😆.. Eric Clapton EVH guitar hero said no one before or since extracted more out of a electric guitar from a playing and sound perspective than Jimi hendrix...period
Eric Clapton never said.@@stephenboyes5189
These guitarists playing and Inovations , are like kids compared to a being that's to this very day Is still misunderstood , only because he were of just a very different origin, we'll never see him again, It such an disgusting thing to see his name In the same breath as these random guitar players.
BTW - for others who think so below- I too prefer Santana's Gibson SG days.. but again- subjective - my opinion. No knock on PRS - I just like his earlier tones..
Easy one, EVH WAY better....
Controversial
A wise, caring guru who has taught me so much through his music.
Eddie Van Halen the best guitarist in the world need I say more
Yh now hendrix is dead😂
I see thei'r no age restriction here!!!!!
Carlos Santana is my love.
Van Halen

john mayer haha jokin...
I asked my brother - a brilliant guitar player himself - about this. This is what he said:
‘So, Jimi Hendrix, I’m a fan of his playing and music. I think what he done that no one else was really doing at the time was, 1. A big distorted sound, that wasn’t as common at that point as most rock n roll bands were still very blues based. 2. He started using the whammy bar in ways other guitarists weren’t at the time, doing more crazy sounds with it. 3. He was a complete showman of a guitarist with the likes of playing with his teeth and with the guitar behind his head. Most guitarists at the time such as Page and Clapton were more your cool pose while playing type guitarists.
He was very creative with the guitar, and wrote some great songs, but so were a lot of others at the time so I would say my 3 points were the main things that made him stand out, in my opinion. But he didn’t do anything even close to how Eddie completely changed how the guitar was perceived, and what you could do with it. Jimi stood out, but Eddie was stratospheric and actually blew guitarists minds. Guitarists couldn’t figure out how he created the sounds he was creating even from the first album. That’s not the case for Jimi, you could play his stuff fairly easily and sometimes better than he did as he was sometimes quite sloppy. So in my opinion, I hear people compare Eddie to Jimi, it’s not even a comparison. Eddie composed amazing music with the guitar, with complex rhythms and never before seen technical abilities, and creating new ways of playing just to get the sounds he was chasing, and that no one had ever heard or seen before. Jimi never really done anything like that.
That’s my opinion, being a fan of both, but sorry to say Jimi couldn’t lace Eddie’s boots. But Jimi’s music is definitely worth listening to.’
how did he incorporate the black panthers into his music? smh.....
It is said that the Black Panther thugs hung around the ticket box of Some of Jimi Hendrix''s concerts demanding a cut of the ticket sales to help his " brothers out . " My source for this was in a Jimi Hendrix book and I have read at least 15 of his books and I can no longer remember which book it was in because I smoke too much pot .
@@kookamunga2458 Hendrix did not fuck with them though to be honest because he was for everyone.
Carlos living legend. Great mind no BS.
Allan Holdsworth was the greatest guitarist ever. May our Lord keep him. I will miss him forever....
That was crushing, losing him. It's funny, in the fusion arena, while I always liked Allan, I listened to more Al. Now it's totally flipped. I can't imagine playing and writing like Allan. Jimi is my favorite by a galaxy, as his music, playing and writing violently shakes me to the core. But Allan is a totally different deal. I'm glad to hear that nobody ever tries to compare the two, talk about totally opposite, hyper creative, genius lyrical playing and writing spaces. Cheers, mate!
Sorry, between Hendrix and Van Halen, I gotta go with Eddie. Dude was like Mozart with the guitar and came after Hendrix, Santana, and Eric Clapton and could arguably shred faster than any of them. Hendrix was innovative and could shred upside down but Eddie could arguably do that and more...
eddie van halen no doubt.
PRS guitars👌👌
Hendrix off course love Eddie to but Jimi was the biggest game changer in only 4 short years and Jimi Hendrix was much more versatile Jimi could play really anything!!
santana is absolutely correct hendrix is way better than eddie van halen
I'm living here in autlan de Navarro, Santana's and my mothers birthplace, and I've seen that not many people like him. Some hate him. I will ask how many times he comes and visits, and the answer is usually the same. "F**k that guy". Still love him as an artist though.
Clapton is God. Hendrix Killed God! Kids don't Understand. Let me give you an example, People know way more things now then they did in 1915. There are scientist who know 10 times more as Einstein did back then. But it doesn't mean they are Greater than Einstein, what he did changed the face of physics. and What Hendrix did changed the face of Music. There is no question about Van Halen's Genius But come on Hendrix Invented Playing and Rockstar persona. Remember He died at the age of 27. How much he did for his age is simply not measurable.
Prakas Rijal
EVH reinvented every single aspect of rock guitar of rock guitar.
Hendrix changed rock period in 4 years
@@TonyGilbert1 EVH did it in 1 year with his debut
He is just COOL , he seems as Young Soul. BRAVO Carlitos ! Eres los más!
You can't diss the Beatles Carlos - ????
The only way you convince me who’s the greatest is who is on my son’s playlist in 2021 and that’s Hendrix not Van Halen!
Santana hat recht Hendrix ist besser als VH..Jimi war vielseitiger er konnte alles spielen,
Genau!
Yeah I saw the vid all he did was light it on fire then start smashing it like he was a part of The Who 😂😂💀
Evh was 100 times better that jimmy hendrix ya be flipped a guitar around Eddie Van Halen made the most iconic and recognizable guitar ever and evh is just better
first his name is jimi Hendrix. not jimmy Hendrix. second he flipped his guitar around becous they didn't have left handed guitars back then,, and 3rd Hendrix lit his guitar on fire and still played it while it was burning, EDDIE never did that. learn you're facts before you say more stupid shit!!
Nigel Gatwood sorry for the mess up on his name the auto correct messed me up and yeah he may of lit his guitar on fire and what not but I stated he flipped his guitar cause I knew they didn’t have left handed guitars I just never really liked what he did I was always more into Eddie for his one innovation and his sound I never said Hendrix was bad he’s just not really my type of influence I’m a randy Rhodes and obviously evh guy hope that explains it
And Jimi never picked it back up and played it he literally burnt it then destroyed it 💀😂 you tell me to learn the facts ??
they have video of him playing it while on fire.. so yes learn the facts
Agreed jimi did change the game but Eddie's guitar skills is way better
2:38
Shameless kissing up.
lol
Love it! Neither Beachboys or Beatles! Right on Carlos!
santana is a one trick pony
evh destroys him
I agree with you but come on santana is awesome
good joke
no one trick pony have the top 15 of better guitars of all time dummy
His best stuff was done with a Gibson sg. Fuck those boring ass prs guitars
I would have picked Fenders
Why is this even a discussion?! Hendrix invented thousands of styles, Van Halen didn't invent squat.
*A Guitar Legend .... Love Santana*
EVH is very good, IMHO technically, but Hendrix was so much more than that. Musically, Hendrix was among the generation of electric guitar geniuses - Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page to name those at the core - there are others- and Hendrix was looked up to by people of this class. Hendrix was of and beyond his time technically and- with shoe string technology and electronics- compared to what is more recently available. Not to mention that he played with soul and so much more dimension. There is simply no comparison. Hendrix was an innovator. EVH was of his time and awesome for his time, but he is not what Hendrix was to the guitar and to music. Sorry.. again... just my opinion, but one that is backed up by musicians as well. Lets keep our shirts on here...
Both santana and hendrix..Eddie will mob the floor with them...Eddie
lol, this just shows me you never heard Hendrix if you say shit like that!!
I agree with you Eddie did more than Hendrix, yeah Hendrix started it but Eddie really brought it to life
I'm surprised the interviewer asked Beach Boys versus Beatles, rather than the usual Beatles vs Stones or Zep.
Beach Boys for me!
VOODOO MF CHILE (SLIGHT RETURN)! NO MORE DEBATE!
Eddie Van Halen is God !!
God created humans, and EVH is a human being. Jesus Christ is God!
wrong Hendrix is. or did you forget he. beat eric Clapton a former god
EVH anyday Hendrix was the most overrated guitarist just like jimmy plagarist
Hahaha ok
Jimi is GOD
Eddie Van Halen and Tony Iommi makes Hendrix and Santana look boring and irrelevant.
That's just a dumb thing to say really. And I love all of them.
Please!! leave his name out of these childless conversation, use Beck Instead. thanks.
Eddie Van Halen overall was the best guitarist.
EVH had guitars flying off the walls at guitar shops with kids wanting to be like him. Not taking anything away from Hendrix, but Hendrix was very creative with the little that he knew. I'm only going by what I hear when I listen to Hendrix. I'm non-bias here, because neither one is my favorite to listen to. I love the sound and feel of Slash's playing and is not the best. Hendrix only makes 1 on charts because he's dead. Owners of his rights keep pushing him, because they are milking every dime out of his corpse and no one will say anything in the industry about him not being the best because we don't speak bad of the dead and no one wants to be called a racist for not calling him 1. Most people who say Hendrix was the best can't name any of his songs, well maybe purple haze?
Exactly!!
I personally hate his style of music, the only good thing about Santana is that it brought Greg Rollie and Neal Schon together. He is a great musician, no denying that but I really don’t like his music.
theres no better guitarist , music is not sport ! you understand that if you play ! what is better guitarist ? doesn't mean anything ! its a state of mind , ok you can say that van halen is more technical than santana , because he cames later but is alan holdsworth better than joe pass , lol ! if you can say that you a very good player ! i know a lot of good player but unknow, nobody has the Truth ! its stupid !
NO guitarist is greater than Hendrix.
Tommy Hargrove For me Santana is the best!!
+Tommy Hargrove (Tanmantana) Thats entirely subjective and passing your opinion off as fact is arrogant. Jimi is a marvelous player but saying he is the best every, is just wrong
+Tommy Hargrove (Tanmantana) I thought the same until I heard Paco de lucia and sabicas
Prince liked Santana better than Hendrix. Or at least that's what I heard him say.
Exho. Music is not subjective and passing your opinion off as fact is arrogant too. And you cannot say that Jimi is marvelous when you just said its subjective. Your are not being consistent and that is wrong for you to do that.

Grew up in San Francisco...? and talks like a typical hypocrite latino :-)
you suck rotten eggs
You’re a legend mr Santana!
I'm tired of these random bleeding hearts who think Hendrix is greater than Halen.
Hendrix was a movement. Speaking about hendrix as just the greatest rock guitarist ever which he easily is does a great injustice to him. Hendrix exists among coltrane, miles, beethoven, the true greats in regards to true art whether it be visual or sound. We still talk about hendrix because of his absolute impact not just on guitar but on music, art, style etc, jimi was just that dude. His influence can be felt in every important musical movement that followed him, because of him the guitar has been elevated to an importance in rock music rivaled only by the human voice. I dig the shit outta EVH great rock player, great swag kicked rock guitar in the ass when rock needed a cool kickass player but he should never be mentioned alongside hendrix in regards to greatness, apples and oranges JIMI IS A GODHEAD eddie is a really cool rock guitarist 2 different things.
Eric Harris We can make many theories here. And it can similarly be argued that Beethoven was not the greatest in his field.
That said, I do think Eddie has gotten a shitloaod of due praise, just the same. I'd like to see him get bowed down to by everyone, but no one can have that, not even Jimi himself. I've seen God knows how many of these musician interviews over the years where they're asked to discuss Player X, Band Z, etc and a lot of them have lavished VH with praise, and musicians from all areas of rock, practically. Everyone from Mellancamp(!), to Henry Rollins(!), to Nugent, to Slash, to Iommi, to the Pantera guys, to Kerry King of Slayer, to Zakk Wylde who calls him Edward The Great. That's only a few names, I could go on. He's gotten his share, Van Halen was the most populist hard rock band of them all. Hard to deny. Everyone on the spectrum from: basic radio rock, to glam bands, to hard rock, to heavy metal, to REALLY heavy metal liked VH to SOME degree. I WOULD say, however, that the really old dudes who date back to the 60s like Santana and Neil Young tend to cite Jimi as their guy (might be an era component to this thing with either Jimi or VH). Most people who really liked VH were of that 70s-80s time period or about 10 or so yrs younger than Eddie. End of the day, I don't think Eddie gets SHIT ON, per se, but I do understand why some people want the mythos of Jimi Hendrix torn down. I get it. Frankly, I think Page, Clapton, and older guys of Jimi's era have taken more of a backseat to Jimi than Eddie has. The sheer repetition of the Eddie/Jimi question is proof enough. They ain't askin Jimi vs Jimmy or Jimi vs Clapton. Eddie's the only obvious one since Jimi to put against him. That's a compliment in its own right. (I don't dislike Jimi, btw, not hating on him).
I'm more disturbed by Santana's no Beatles or no Beach Boys answer. What the hell? It always stuns me when I find someone who never found anything to like about The Friggin Beatles, for Godsake. Damn, even Ozzy and Lemmy liked The Beatles. It seems to me like something you actually have to TRY to do. I got a sib who likes neither Beatles or Zep in any way. That boggles my mind. To me, that's evidence of brain damage.
Very well said, Eric!
Ok, since I know this debate will go on forever, I'll just throw everything I know and let you guys do whatever. I will not respond to comments. I play guitar. I play a Wolfgang standard, peavey vypyr, and occasionally a boss DS-1 (so you have proof). When I say Van Halen is more skilled, I mean it. As far as better, that is objective, and up to opinion. But Eddie moves faster, stretches farther, and incorporates more difficult techniques in his playing. Eddie also has more expirience, seeing as he is decades older than Hendrix ever will be. (RIP) I say Eddie is better because: 1: more experience 2: use of harmonics, tapping, and other, more experimental techniques (at the time) 3: he inspired a whole new genre, and maybe even finalized hard rock itself 4: speed. I am basing all of this on skill and difficulty of the guitar playing, which is all we have to go on because there is no better artist, you may have a preference, but it means nothing as far as who is the better guitar player. So, if you will, take advice from a person who has personal, first hand experience playing both styles. Hendrix is simply overrated. He is only credited with being #1 because he is vintage, like old cars. "It's better because it's older" (or In this case not-dead). Trust me, eddie is better. Let the trolling begin.

The mind is a very dangerous place at times too not the heart so much

van Halen is overrated he only have one good solo
you got that right
nope not overrated. even underrated
