These days a Steiner Scout Lance Composition is more like: 2 Fafnir, 1 Atlas, 1 Zeus for long range fire support, and 1 Banshee to do the actual Scouting.
With endo steel structure and fibro fibrous armour i was only able to fit 4 medium pulse lasers and two er medium lasers on the base model without swapping out the engine.
It would be hilarious to see a Charger variant that askewed firearms altogether and just existed to pound other mechs into dust. After all, fists don't run out of ammo. I just have the mental image of a small Lance of light mechs scouting out an area before being tackled and pummeled into scrap by a charger.
An old custom Let's Play scenario kiiiinda did this. The scenario was crazy Periphery pirate war with everybody involved in various Mad Max-esque custom designs. It had a Charger. With one flamer, two small lasers, jump jets and hardened armor. It had special rules that allowed it to go full WWE on other Mechs, pulling stunts like clotheslines, suplexes, dropkicks etc. Also, the pilot's callsign was "Randy" and the Mech was nicknamed "Savage". And yes, it was painted so the head looked like it was wearing a bandana and shades. And the flamer was head-mounted, so it could spit fire. 🤣
Ahh, the Charger. When you shouldn't be afraid of the Mech, but absolutely should be afraid of the absolute madman who looks at it and goes "Fuck yeah, I can work with this!"
Maybe I missed it but I haven't seen or heard anything about the SB variant of the Charger. 3/5/0 movement. Completely maxed out armor. 28 heat sinks. And a large laser in each arm and torso and a medium laser in the head. An 8Q Awesome knock off? Maybe, but a pretty flippin' cool one.
I once built a custom Steiner Charger. I called it the CGR-3A5. 5/8 XL Engine, 5 ER Medium Lasers, a Small Laser, a Heavy Gauss Rifle, and TSM. This all coupled with max armor. Yes, this was an 80-ton mech running as fast as a 45-ton Phoenix Hawk. The design started with an AC/20 Charger and matched the mini in terms of configuration. The performance was horrifying; I've seen it kill 100-ton Clan mechs in as little as 2 rounds. The thing about my design is, every single thing had been done on other Steiner mechs. It was very much lore-friendly.

We did a fun mission once, back in the day, we had a two scout lances and our job was to chase down and stop a lance with two Chargers (from the Dukes of Hazard merc company), an Ostrock, and Ostscout from getting too close and scouting our HQ where we'd been secretly bringing in reinforcements to launch a surprise attack (that is, stop them from reaching the edge of a long map). That was actually a fairly challenging mission. Since most of our scouts were light weights, we didn't have a lot of range. So most of our mechs had to close, and 5 small lasers or an 80-ton punch can do a lot of damage to a 20 or 30 ton mech. And the charger moves fast enough that it doesn't take many turns to reach the other end of the map, even with rough terrain, and it's armor lets it absorb a lot of light damage, so it can focus on evading and getting across the field. In that respect, in the world of the game, a heavily armored, 80-ton scout mech actually made some sense.
I like the 1A5 model. Like the Banshee 3s, it trades its large engine for a smaller one, and gets some proper firepower for close-in work at the cost of speed.

I kinda like the idea that in-universe the Melee Based Assault Scout is this idea that people keep trying to make work despite really mixed results once they hit real battle. (Cough, Banshee, cough.) Like the blimp or submarine aircraft carriers in real life history. A real neat idea to add verisimilitude, honestly. OH, and vote A.
They finally got the Banshee right. Steiner made a slower one with better weapons and the Word of Blake used weight reducing gear to give it more firepower and a axe.
There was a great idea behind the creation of this mech, too bad the mech designers couldn't live up to the great idea, which was sadly lacking and totally out of range for the technology for the time. I haven't had to much luck with mine, it is currently serving as a hanger queen.
I guess it was purpose built to have little room for weaponry, because endo-steel and an XL engine couldve let this mech run with a load out similar to a Victor, but faster.

I was very confused playing mw5m when I acquired a charger 1a1, 70 tons of structure left only 10 tons for weapons and armour, utterly useless unless your trying to win a foot race against an urban mech and you've already had one of your legs blown off

I can't understand why FASA bothered wasting time and resources on a joke BattleMech like this. Time is money in any business and this one is a waste of both. They should have just gone with the AC-20 and any other variants.
Players view of the game is focused on the small tactical skirmishes that is the main focus of gameplay. This tends to give a very skewed view of what is actually useful in a military vehicle, and if you accept the conceit that mechs are actually militarily useful in the first place, then it turns out that there are lots of 'joke' mechs that are really useful in an actual war because there are all sorts of things that occur in war that don't occur in small tactical skirmishes. Beyond that, the Charger was an example of a mech that makes no sense under the original 3025 rules, but which actually makes a ton of sense (80 tons of sense) when you introduce XL engines.
I think it's halfway between trying to force players to have a "close combat" mech and see what happens when you max out the engine in a mech. Anyone in universe with an ounce of sense would make it a 75 ton machine which would give the exact same speed with twelve tons of armour, twelve heat sinks and a large laser with a pair of medium lasers to pew pew with and only do one point of damage less when throwing a punch in close combat.
When the video started and I heard “80 ton scout mech,” I thought for sure it would have served with the Lyran Commonwealth. I was a little disappointed it only served with the Combine Clowns. I vote A because I also think Superheavies are interesting.

LLaser in the right hand, PPC in the left, three MLasers. Drop the engine from a 400 to a 320, add more armor and heat sinks.
