    Looks aside, I think the Vox has the edge over the Yamaha. I need to do an A-B test to be sure & I do want to throw the Mustang GT40 in there too as the built in Looper & ability to change patches that don't affect the loop are really appealing. Stay tuned for that review! Cheers

      I have the Yamaha one too, it's great, I've spent a bit of time with the pc editor making up some nice presets ... for me, the omission of a line out is a bit pants though - it would be really usable for little gigs if it had one - there's a headphone out but it mutes the speakers of course. If this could be switchable I'd be a happy chap. Amp-wise, anyway. Looks like the vox is the same.

      Actually, did you cover that? Can the Vox take a separate cab? I think a new small modeling amp shootout deserves a re-visit. The three you mentioned plus I thought Blackstar had a newer lunchbox sized amp with similar features to this.

    You guys need to do a blind test: hide five amps: THR, this Vox, a Katana, a TwoRock and a Victory - or some such. Mic them all up the same way, and see which viewers prefer, without knowing if it's tube or transistor. This amp sounds very nice. I just wish there were a direct comparison....

      Plus it's got to be so annoying to listen to Rob play the same fucking string bend run through the scale as fast as he can solo every God damn time he picks up a guitar I can't stand it anymore and immediately fast forward but poor Lee is stuck in there with full volume.

    • @colaboytje
      @colaboytje 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      He knows how to play, but it doesn't show. It's always more of the same. That's why I love it when Rabea does a demo. That guy knows how to play clean, blues, rock, metal, ... and still sounds very musical in all the genres. And with a strat he's simply a joy to listen to.

      raze101 Why do we have to prove ourselves? It won't make Rob play differently. I said Rob knows how to play, but in almost every gear demo, he does the same thing. Have you seen Rabea do demo's on his channel? He goes from amazing beautifull clean playing to djent. What is the point of seeing Rob play sweeps and djent playing in every gear demo?

    My wishlist (I own a THR10):
    - Looper needs an effects loop. If you want a mellow background sound, then an overdriven lead in your looping... Tough luck. Because the looper has to go in the front end signal path, you can't get it to loop the wet signal, then change the settings.
    - Related: if you've got a, say, Boss-RC30, with microphone input -- you have to use a clean effects chain since the vocal gets the same effect as the guitar. If the looper were via separate send/receive then it becomes much more useful.
    - No output suitable for FOH. I know it's a practice amp, but if you wanted to use it just for its really nice amp simulation, you can't.
    - Power supply issues cause noise. I get noise from mine as soon as I plug it into anything else that's got an earth.
    - Cut out on low battery. If you play loud on battery some sort of automatic cut-out turns the amp off and it needs a switch on and off to bring it back. That means no nice linear degredation on failing batteries -- if they're not brand new you can't trust it to stay on after an hour or so of playing.
    - Bluetooth input (as Cap says)
    - Not enough headroom on input (as Cap says), they've obviously pushed the digital chain right to the limit on dynamic range. That means if you put signal + looped signal into it, it's too much and distorts the input -- but not in a nice analogue amp way, in an overflowing digital value way -- farty and horrible.
    All that being said, I love my THR, and it doesn't look like this Vox fixes enough of the above to tempt me (and it's nowhere near as pretty so the wife might not let it in the living room).

    • @Snappers3b
      @Snappers3b 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My big thing is the Effects Loop for Looping purposes just as you mentioned. Thought it since day 1 of owning the THR10. If this was available in the VOX then I would change but seeing it isn't... not enough of a reason to purchase this one. Would be an option if I didn't have a practice amp of this size though. May choose this over the Yamaha for Bluetooth purposes.

    • @marksieczko4393

      As well as an FX loop, an aux stereo input for connection to i-phone, laptop, 2nd giutar or mini-key board, drum machine, mic etc. A clean 50W output amp(s) would easily handle multi-inputs.

    Lee, I've wanted Bluetooth on my thr 10 since about two weeks after I got it. I really like it, but you could do so much more with it if it had Bluetooth. That and a stereo effects loop, then it would be close to perfect. the main reasons would be to add wireless accessories like a footswitch to select between the presets, and obviously streaming audio.
    I think the declared number of a maximum devices is 6. 4 is about the most you can practically get away with before you start running into problems.

      @drovoseg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What was wrong with Vox?

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drovoseg I don't want to assume anything, as I only have THR10x and 10c (biased, I know). However, what I can tell you is that I've yet to see a small (or bigger) practice amp that rivals the dynamics and response of the small THR units. It's not the sound, it's more of a tactile thing.
      I will be fair, on the 10x I mostly use Brown I, Southern Hi and Clean settings, but the effects are good to great and those channels simply deliver. Power I also works in low gain for hendrix stuff and much more. The flat / bass models are excellent for pedals/modelers/other sources (even music, as to be able to EQ to taste as opposed to serving it though aux in.
      Most other ss/digital amps I've tried, while they do have good sounds inside, lack this level of dynamics and feedback.
      For instance, I do have a newer MOOER GE-200 multiFX unit which I can run into PAs or even the THR LineIn/BASS/FLAT setting or speakers/headphones, with tons and tons of great sounds and effects (and Impulse Responses). However, I don't feel any of them have that tactile thing the small Yamaha amps do so well.
      In many instances you can go from gentle clean to dirty and mean just by using finger/pick attack. Most models respond extraordinarily well to the guitar's volume knob (assuming it's not the kind that gos instant off after turning it down one fifth.
      They also are the best sounding units at really really low volumes. At 2 AM, if I did have to crank something up to get a good sound, I'd rather crank a tube amp w/powersoak :)
      So, I don't know what to say, for something a little louder I'd probably just skip ahead to BOSS Katana (maybe) or something similar.
      Connectivity-wise, well, there's an app that allows loading/saving presets via usb cable+otg adapter and smartphone for the Yamaha (I suppose a bluetooth - USB receiver could be used for that and aux in perhaps), but it's a really nice feature on the Vox, that's for sure.
      The tuner on the THR is accurate and fast for any tunging/pitch while as far as I see, the vox only offers some leds to check standard tuning.
      I'll surely try the Vox at some point, but based on what I know so far, I'd much rather have an updated THR to rule them all :)

    People who know small amplifiers well or have heard a lot of them; Can you give me some SUGGESTIONS (don't argue/fight) for an amplifier with the following criteria:
    - Analogue, so transistor or valve and no digital modeling and effects (it's not necessary).
    - One or two channels/modes, or at least the ability to switch between low and high gain.
    - A natural/balanced "transparent" sound. So not necessarily a single/strong character like "Blues" or "Metal".
    - In a size that's easy to move around and place indoors. - Even up to a 1x10" or 1x12" (though that probably gets heavier).
    - And an affordable(!) price-tag, as it would be an extra practice-amp. So preferably not break or hit the 400 Pound/Euro mark.
    I'm not talking necessarily about a direct comparison to this Vox and the Yamaha, which are nice, but a more straightforward analogue practice-amp. - I know there are the small Blackstar ones for example, which I'm already taking in consideration, so kind of along that line. I mean, I'd like to know which other ones are out there to consider.

    • @michaelangeloh.5383
      @michaelangeloh.5383 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's probably the fact that it's being recorded with a microphone against the speaker (in stereo, too) and then good spacious modeling. - I don't think it would sound AS impressive if you were in the room with it. - It's like with any other small speakers; It can be impressive up close, but as you get farther away from it, even a bit, it starts sounding kinda weak and small.
      Could be wrong, it might still make it seem "big" with its imaging, which helps a lot, but the point being that perspective, literally the way you're catching the sound, matters.

    I am loving the vox tho because it has everything on board , where with yamaha you would at least have to buy 2 different versions to come at same level. The dual rec on the vox sounds killer, but also very nice boutique strat sounds are possible...
    If we could have the sounds and functionallity in the THR casing, that would be the ultimate amp
    I also firmly believe this concept are the best thing home players can buy. Speakers sound very convincing... Beter to buy some high end desktop amp like this or the yamaha instead of a modelling amp with a 8inch guitar speaker. These things are not cheap at all, but you get great quality...

      @@WorldEagleKW It's probably saved a lot of marriages. Most wives or significant others don't want a man-cave in the living room. There is often a ban on amps or "backline" in most rooms of the house.
      With the THR, it just looks like a little radio or something. It's kind of pretty actually. And it does a decent guitar tone at a reasonable volume.

    I have the Boss Katana 50 watt . For power for gigging , and the fantastic plethora of Boss effects . I purchased the Yamaha THR-X as a practice amp and sometimes use it as a Preamp through the Katana as my cab . The tones you can dial in are to many to count. If your a Metal , Thrash , Shred person I think its a must have . I have 34+ plus yrs. as a Gigging Guitarist and over a decade of session work . Both amp's compliment each other and wont hurt your wallet . The Vox they are testing does have some cool features but you wont miss them imho ??

    That "wide stereo" thing is an enhancement deal using phase shifts, as many small countertop CD/radios have used forever; it can be turned off in the Yamaha, otherwise apparently can mess with headphone/as line out audio. I also don't get testing a basic small unit with integrated setting options by bypassing to obfuscate using extra pedal stuff. What are we hearing, the unit or the pedal?

    Hi!
    Thanks for all your hard work. The question I’d like to ask (partly connected to last week’s “Small Valve Amp or Big Modelling Amp? Which is Better??” video) is, which is better in this price range for home recording? Six months ago I tried a Yamaha THR10, and immediately fell in love with it. Only to discover, post purchase, it’s really hard to record. Just never sounds anywhere near as good (either dynamic or condenser mics). Some feel this is to do with the fact it is basically producing the sound of a well recorded cab, rather than sounding like an actual cab in the room.
    Anyway, there are lots of people out there it seems who, like me, just want to record wee songs at home. And are on a tight budget.
    Perhaps some form of A/B/C/etc. testing would help those folk? Focusing on how well they sound recorded? Perhaps a Vox AC4C1-12 vs. THR10 vs Vox Adio vs Blackstar (ID:CORE BEAM?) vs something similar?
    Anyway, that’s my request/suggestion. Okay, one of them…

    This might beat the yamaha but at 229.00 you can get the Katana mk2 , all these table top amps should be $199 and under . You would have to be really tight on space to get this over a Katana.

    Don't forget the software the Yamaha has, as it has a compressor with stomp or rack mode, a noise gate a reverb setting with Room,Plate,Hall and Spring that gives Hi/Low ratio and Hi/low Depth and Level and the same with the Delay and Chours,Tremolo,Flanger and Phaser plus it has 5 speaker cabs and many presets plus a web site with downloadable patches plus it can be battery operated but this is a great comparison Vox is moving up I'll bet their software is up to par too. Wow Great PRS.

    Vox was never really on my radar until I played a Vt20x the other day for a couple hours. It has a preamp tube that seems like it makes a difference. Sounded way better than my Blackstar id20tvp. I'm a huge Blackstar fan, so I hate to say I'm switching it for the Vox. I did not want to like the Vox, but I did.

    Hey guys - good video but not using the iPhone app takes away a good chunk of functionality. The Tone Room app gives you different effects immediately and less need to have all those pedals on the floor getting in the way if you simply want to practice at home or in a small area. Give it a try if you haven't already.

    I also own a THR 10 (a THR 10X in fact). In fact, it's the only amp I have in my workshop. In regard to using a pedal with a THR, I actuallu use a Maxon OD808 as a clean boost in front and though it doesn't add much to the drive, it adds loads more sustain (I only ever use my Maxon as a clean boost with 0 gain)...

    The comment The Captain brought up about using pedals in a modeling amp has me intrigued. Are modeling or solid state amps good for using with pedals? I've always had a pedal or two with my Fender Deluxe 90 (solid state) and it's sounded good, but is it ideal?
