  • When did it become taboo to be an outfit repeater? And do we really care? The answer is no. We love repeating outfits, but even in the name of sustainability, we don’t believe in sacrificing style. Whether you use an outfit formula, styling tricks, an outfit tracker, or an album of go-to fits on your phone, there are plenty of ways to be an outfit repeater without getting bored of your clothes. In today’s episode, we talk about what’s behind outfit repeating, and ways to do it without getting bored.

Only wearing something once is such an insane and wild idea if you think about it. Just imagine the whole process of making a garment - growing cotton, for example, harvesting it, producing fabric out of it, sewing, packaging, putting up on the web-site, transporting the item to the store or to you - just so you can put it on that ONE time… Mind-blowing and insane.

And if you’ve bought it because you love it and feel great in it, why wouldn’t you want to keep wearing it?

I think the key for me is mindset more than anything. It is having a rebellious spirit that sticks it to the proverbially “Constant Consumerism Man.” WEARING AND LOVING WHAT YOU HAVE IS AN ACT OF REBELLION. Wearing something until the end of its life is rebellion. Changing your mindset from one of consumption to contentedness is rebellion. Loving the old rather than lusting after the new is rebellion. Being proud of outfit repeating rather than embarrassed or apologetic is an act of rebellion. “I’ve had this for years” instead of “I just got this” is rebellion. Ultimately, without a sense of rebellion and countercultural inclination, outfit repeating feels like more punishment than play. : )

OMG! I absolutely agree. Every time I make do instead of spending money-whether it’s putting together a new outfit with old clothes or making a new meal out of yesterday’s leftovers- it feels subversive. I feel so counter culture when I say “I have enough.” It’s my way of declaring independence from the machine!

I am always amused at so many influencers, pushing trends and not supporting outfit repeating. However, they are all wearing the same jumper/coat/shoes etc from the same brands! No individualism just wear this camel coat/trench/these jeans/this jumper. I stopped following so many because this message had never resonated with me. But I do love the subjects you all discuss regularly, it's a realistic view. Many thanks. You are making a difference to a lot of people ❤

Alyssa, what you said about viewing your clothing as silhouettes really resonated with me. This is something I’ve recently learned from watching Tibi style classes where Amy talks about clothing as tools. It really opened up my closet that was full of fundamentals and elevated basics and I finally felt like I could be creative in pairing items by playing with silhouettes, textures, fabrics, etc. For the first time in my life (I’m 36), I feel like I have endless possibilities from just a few pieces - so so so amazing!

I once saw a middle aged woman in a wheelchair who was grocery shopping at Walmart. She was dressed so expensively and beautifully that I’ve never forgotten it. So I agree that if we have nice things, perhaps we should just take the chance and wear them!

It sometimes takes me several months to get into the rhythm of how new pieces fit into my wardrobe, even though I never buy anything without at least 5 ways to wear it in my head! I love having older pieces that I know work and then updating them with new pieces. It gives older pieces a new lease of life and makes new pieces fit in more comfortably. I’m like Alyssa - I don’t think about the age of a garment, I think about how it can be styled differently.

...and to Christina’s point, I get so much satisfaction out of styling aged pieces I kept for decades and inherited. I chose to keep them for good reasons. My grandmothers velvet coat gets showered with compliments, and the shock value is priceless when my 51 year old self gets to say “yea, I wore this when I was 19” ...

I love the idea of slowing down and giving yourself time to work with a garment piece and figuring out where it fits in your style. Finding ways to use it in the different aspects of our lives and uniforms. I have many different silhouettes and style elements that I enjoy wearing, and I find it hard to limit it. I remember hearing a pastor say church isn't a fashion show, and all I could think was, why not? The Lord loves beautiful things, just look at nature, and if the only chance I have to wear my beautiful things is church, then so be it!

Some excellent points here. The one about trends limiting how you see your existing clothes especially. This is one of the main contributors to waste and fashion contributing to unsustainable lifestyles. Here’s a thought experiment - some time back the style shifted to oversized blazers and wider leg pants. Let’s say in the next few years the style shifted again but this time to nipped in blazers and slimmer bottoms…then we look at our big clothes and they don’t look right, right? So we start getting rid of some of them and replacing them with the new style. Or would any of you just stick with what you have and continue to wear exactly the same outfit formula as you do now because it is your style? I wonder….

One of your best podcasts so far, very inspiring as it really gets to the heart of the matter. I’ve been on a “style” journey for about 3 years (I’m a “young” 59 yr old) and watched some great (and not so great!) TH-cam videos. Re style uniform, I have an office job in Australia and I wear black pants and shoes Mon-Thu (Fridays we can wear what we like) but then I’ll change my tops/layers/earrings to jazz things up. Out of work I live in jeans/pants but in different colours/styles. If I’ve bought something new that I haven’t been brave enough to wear, I’ll put it on after work and wear it around the house to make sure it’s comfortable. If it passes the comfort test then I’ll look in the mirror and if it looks okay too it’s a keeper and I’ll work on different ways to style it. Comfort is key! Love your work ladies 😊👍

  • @luluandmeow

It's a great reminder to give ourselves a little more time to get dressed and change/tweak what doesn't work. Sometimes I go out thinking I look great and then I realise that my boots match my outfit but not my coat or scarf, it would only have taken a minute to change this instead of rushing out the door (note to self: match footwear and accessories with outerwear in winter as most of the outfit will not be visible under the coat). I must remember to take one last look in the mirror before I leave the house or regret my outfit every time I catch myself in a shop window or mirror. And yes, dress yourself every day or at least most days so you get familiar with your outfits and find out if anything needs tweaking, also this way you feel comfortable and confident in your clothes. This was another great podcast, thank you ladies!

Funny, I always preferred wide leg jeans, but never before found ones with high rise so I would always wear them only on warmer months. On the other hand skinny jeans that I found in shops were mostly higher waisted, so I (still) enjoy them during the winter months in my knee high boots. When it rains or there's that watery snow around - I just can't wear my wide leg (or even longer straight leg) anything cause it gets wet. But maybe it's just my local weather (greetings from Croatia😊)

I think what helped me most about following minimalist fashion bloggers is to look at your closet of clothes as a wardrobe.
I used to just grab an item I like and add it to my closet rather than thinking of a wardrobe over all. What helped me is really thinking about my colors.
I don't just use 3. I love jewel tones but I think its helpful to have neutrals to mix with the jewel tones. I wear a lot of cardigans, so it's noce to have black tank tops to pair with it and jewel toned tanks to pair with my black, grey or navy cardigans.

My buggest flex is I take pride in choosing outfits suitable for most occasions. E.g. last summer I bought a dress which is equally appropriate for a walk, a colleague get-together, a night out in the theatre, visiting parents, etc. What is more, it's of my favorite color, and the brand is literally my name. It is also nice texture and still appropriate for the fall/winter season (with tights of course).
Now every time I get to wear it I am more and more proud of this great purchase :)

It doesn't have to be complicated, just something different than your go-to hairstyle or makeup, but that still feels true to you and your style vibe♡ Paying attention to these extra details really brings back the fun!

Re: comfortable clothes. My grandma, grandpa and aunties in the 70s only ever wore tailored clothes as the was no alternative. There's no reason why clothes, e.g. jeans should be uncomfortable unless they are not the right size and sadly most people are overweight these days so of course they tend to wear leisure clothing, joggers, tracksuits, leggings, elasticated waistbands, jersey/knit dresses, etc., but I am wary about being too comfortable as wearing stretchy and baggy clothes encourages you to overeat because you don't even notice if you've put on a few lbs. But it soon becomes a slippery slope. My grandma for example (lovely Italian nonna) could not afford to overeat like so many people do nowadays, especially at this time of year, because she wouldn't have been able to button her skirt afterwards and in 2023 I look up to her and often ask myself - what would my lovely grandma wear? I am the same age as her now, 57, and I remember wearing lovely jackets, skirts, blouses, etc. I put on a lot of weight in the pandemic wearing stretchy dresses and now I've lost the weight I make sure I stick to simple but not too comfy clothes, e.g. jeans, and I always tuck in my tops! I also find that if I wear tailored clothes every day they don't feel restrictive or uncomfortable at all, whatever i do, provided the material feels good and is right for the weather.

Fashion is a mode of self-expression. I've always believed in this and will continue to stand by this because what you wear says a lot about the kind of person you are. I really loved this episode because it basically just reinforces those beliefs for me. That, plus I feel like society's fast-paced, ever evolving standards today when it comes to style and fashion are turning people away from wanting to dress up and put in more effort. I have divided my cloths into several different capsules and also divided them in colour sceems each different depending on season. As I live in a climate with four seasons that means I swich my cloths at least four times a year (even favourite jeans) and with only white and offwhite staying all year I never get tired of my cloths. I am way older than you so I have cloths that I have had for both 20 and 30 years. If I invested money into a piece I usually just hang it in the addic if I don’t want to wear it and a couple of years or maybe many years later I have it when it feels right again! Only regrets are things I got rid of that I gladley would have used again and too expensive to buy twice 🫣

For the 'trends' thing and taking clothes out of this context - you're so right!!
I recently heard one youtuber's styling advice, which included getting rid of old pieces as they show off how untrendy you are and how little you care about your appearance.
Meanwhile, my oldest pieces are: leather pants, chequered shirt, metallic handbag...
Luckily, street fashion nowadays tends to normalize wearing whatever you like. Still wearing something past it's 'trendy' season is perceived as one of the greatest styling sins, much worse than wearing something old or just random :(

Usually I feel the best dressed whether I am lawn bowling, going out to lunch with a friend, book club or being in any group of people. But it’s been that way for a long time, basically since high school and I am now 77. In fact, I believe I influenced the wife of my husband/wife employers to upgrade her way of dressing because I wore blazers/jackets to work. That third layer was my “power” piece to sell myself to possible future clients. She started wearing more upgraded clothing styles including jackets and blazers at work. Although my lifestyle is admittedly more casual since retirement I still would rather be overdressed and smart looking/styled than looking too casual and not styled no matter where I am going. I find it very difficult to declutter blazers unless they don’t fit or they don’t work in other ways. I still love the look and the way they make me feel: powerful.

It was really helpful along with storing away those items that don't quite fit atm and donating those that are just not me anymore. It certainly cured me of any desire to bring anything new into the wardrobe but also inspired me to come up with some new outfit formulas for my current lifestyle. In terms of outfit repeating, it really comes into its own when travelling I find.

21:20 It often effects me the opposite way, when a piece is old/vintage and I've had it for a very long time, I put too much "special meaning" to its age/my relationship with it and keep the piece in my closet even when my lifestyle/body/taste has long outgrown it and I never use them anymore. (This has become a huge problem for me since I started living in a tiny NYC apartment with very little closet & no storage space!)

Make me feel they' ve history and I feel different when I wear them, specially the clothes I've for more of ten years or clothes they belonged to a family member before. So, not boring at all. But when you live in a cold and humid weather like me, a puffer jacket every day can be difficult specially because everybody is dressing the same. So I understand that can be difficult.

Interesting about new things jamming up your closet/style/flow. I recently was drawn to trying a few new crazy silhouettes, and am now feeling very annoyed with trying to integrate them. I’ve put them in another closet so that I don’t have to think about them for now (which usually means eventual decluttering). Lesson-move very slowly with tossing in wild cards (especially at age 65)!

I like to have a mock neck/crew neck/v neck for every accent color in my closet. Well not mock neck for summer tees, but you get the idea. Oh and repeat those things with wool and cotton with sweaters. As for bottoms I like to have light wash/medium wash/dark wash/black in flare leg/straight leg and crop jeans. And one pair of tailored pants and one pair of Spanx flares. endless combinations...... I'm debating adding polo collars to the mix. . .we shall see.

I had a colleague who literally wore exactly the same thing two days in a row, then would change to a new outfit and wear that EXACT same outfit two days in a row. I found this behaviour really really odd, as I've never met anyone else who dresses that way! I absolutely definitely repeat outfits and still wear some very old items, but that was just going too far. But whatever makes you happy.

My mom had a boss who wore the same 5 outfits-Monday was always the same…she thought she was so stylish!

My Grandad had 6 suits so he didn't always wear the same one on Mondays! He did always wear them in the same order though I believe!

My mother used to look at the abundance of clothes that my sisters and I had, but still want to shop for more, and she'd say, "You only have one body!" 😅 Btw, she hated shopping!

I'm in my mid 40s now and I proudly still wear 3 pairs of jeans I bought while I was at university in the late 90s. I can still fit into them, they've come back into fashion. Why would I NOT wear them 25+ years later!?

I 100% support the perspective on your old clothes as those of the best quality (survived all these years) and most suitable (there must be reasons why you still have them) :) They are also my safe space when I am not in the mood for experiments or need to dress really quickly.
    Remember Taylor Swift's 'Cardigan':
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
    Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
    - it's all in our heads. If you bought this item in the thrift shop, you wouldn't care less if it's 1yo or 10 yo.
