  • Amber Guymer-Hosking was an Army Medic for 11 years, serving in Afghanistan, Kenya, Malaysia and Brunei.
But after being medically discharged in 2016, her mental health deteriorated and the horrors she witnessed on the battlefield led to nightmares, flashbacks and, finally, suicide attempts.
Please take a few minutes to listen to her story.

You never really hear about the toll war plays on medics, yet they probably see more death than anyone. Thank you for your service, and I really hope your life continues to change for the better.

You're a true warrior Amber, I can't imagine the horrors you've suffered just hearing you trying to describe them is close enough for me. You've saved lives in the field and now you're saving lives by sharing your experiences of PTSD. Young, good looking momma to a wonderful son, whole life ahead of you, go live it lady.

I understand trying to escape I was beaten by my stepfather most days from 10-14 years old I signed up at 16 (a year and a half before I was actually allowed) I joined the Army and found the family I was looking for. The way I dealt with is was that there was always someone worse off than myself out there and that shitty things happen every day sometimes you are there to see it sometime not. We have to live the very best lives we can because some of our mates who didn’t make it back cannot so to honour their sacrifice I try my very best every single day with varying degrees of success 🔥

I can't know the pain of the medical support treating us. I just know we needed to know you were there when we went forward. Please remember the hope you gave many more than you will ever know just being there and the love we have for you all treating our family that unfortunately were injured and killed.

I really hate the name PTSD because disorder implies there's something being wrong with you for having trauma after witnessing gruesome horrors. PTSS (syndrome) is the term we should use.

These people served their country, they were brought to the worst places on earth to restore order, get dumped into society like a hot sack of potatoes without any care for their mental health.
We have known about soldiers having "Battle Fatigue", "Combat Stress Reaction" and "Shell Shock" for more than 100 years now. The fact that there has never been any serious response, policy and help on this is a crying shame.
That we need to sell lottery tickets for these heroes to get the help they deserve, is an absolute mockery of government and ministry.
