- Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Études-tableaux Op. 39 (literally, “study pictures”) were conceived as “musical evocations of external visual stimulae”, while the third of Franz Liszt’s Grandes études S. 141 No. 3 “La Campanella” is based on a theme from Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, and reflects the intertextual connections that can be established between two equally virtuosic languages: those of the violin and the piano.
