I don't get why Mackenzie tries to screw over Brandon when she has a crush on him, she always uses him as blackmail but when push comes to shove she'll actually hurt him
I suspect it's so that when he finally does date her, she'll have something to hold over him. My theory is that Mackenzie wants to maintain control over Brandon to keep him as her boyfriend for as long as possible and have him depend on her. Basically, if she dates Brandon, her popularity status rises and in exchange, she'll have her dad keep Fuzzy Friends open. If he breaks up with her, or she gets tired of him, she could have her dad shut it down in the blink of an eye. It would be an easy way for her to go on an unhinged power trip.
You're right she is EXACTLY a Mary-Sue in so many ways. She's loved for her art, loved by family and friends, is a part of a band, had a reality TV show about her LIFE, got to a student exchange program, went on tour with said band (thus meeting some boy band), has a guy who likes her and might have a chance of going to Paris on Scholarship, too.
I think she finished middle school in the 12th book, the 13th, 14th, and eventually 15th took place over summer, so she'll probably be in high school by the 16th book
I feel a great entry for the series would be like "Mackenzie stopped causing drama and she's become a lot quieter in general, so Nikki goes snooping out of paranoia that the girl's planning some huge life-ruining thing and finds out that Mackenzie's going to therapy and dealing with her mental issues for the first time ever, and Mackenzie's therapist realizes who Nikki is to her client and decides to bring her into the session to address the issues between them" or something like that. Can you IMAGINE?
I want the books to continue in high school SO BAD. Nikki mentioned how she can’t wait to drive her own car and now that she’s old enough to learn and get her permit I think it would be absolutely hilarious to read about that. Also imagine Nikki and Mackenzie talking about how they finally don’t have to deal with each other any longer only for them to be locker neighbors again somehow. I. Need. It. Plus I refuse to rest until Brandon and Nikki are official. And I love the André drama too
If there is a series on nikki in high school, I would love to see nikki mature and became less bratty. And she should finally make amends with mackenzie and become friends with her. There's 2 books on mac/nik being frenemies but it's never legit nor does it develop

I would really love to see Nikki grow as a person too because while her anxieties and self doubt are very relatable to most young people and teenagers, it’s not good to only show the side of Nikki that constantly puts herself down and acts immature. I think it’s so important for kids especially nowadays to learn how important it is to love yourself plus learn and grow from your experiences. Also big yes, definitely need Nikki and Mackenzie to admit to each other that they’re just jealous and insecure and want to be friends

Ok, my bone to pick with this series is that the clothing style/pop culture referrnces are so inconcitent even though its supposed to be set in the same year. Like, first we have all the 2000s refernces and fashion, and by the end they're doing the floss???
exactly!! i feel like since the books came out on like a yearly basis for a while, maybe updating the pop culture references and stuff was the author's way of keeping things relevant with whatever generation the series would've been targeting at that time but i genuinely feel like the series would've benefited sooo much from the timeline being kept consistent with the late 2000s, esp with the relatively recent resurgence of 2000s aesthetics and whatnot - i feel like instead, the series has just ended up with no discernible setting in terms of time which is honestly kind of a shame :(

I loved reading Dork Diaries as a teen. I've always thought Mackenzie should get her spin-off book series, basically in Mackenzie's POV for every previous Dork Diaries book that featured her in big roles. And it could be drawn in the same style that Mackenzie did in that book where she stole Nikki's diary, but Mackenzie would get her own diary somehow. And they would be called... the Diva Diaries, and the covers would be all in leopard print.
I would honestly LOVE that bcs I was actually obsessed with Mackenzie's drawing style in that book, especially the part where she was choosing the outfits to school. I used to stare at them for hourssss she's honestly really talented I'm kinda wishing for her redemption arc lol

It's a teenager POV book, all girls either go through a spoilt mean girl phase or a pick me girl phase. That's what I liked about the series. We saw Mackenzie's POV about her issues, and rn Nikki might be having this celebrity disease. I hope to see a character development tho. Brandon best boy!!!
I was somehow both a Nicki and Mackenzie in middle school, like a literal mix of both, I was popular and loved fashion and makeup (and still do) but also loved drawing and reading and goofing around and tried to be #relatable (that combo honestly helped me get popular)

I’ve had the Paris book on hold for like almost 2 years now and the last one came out like 4 years ago so who knows when it’s coming out. Anyway my favorite book was the Mackenzie one but I also loved the fairytale one, the birthday party one, and the latest one.
When I was younger, my primary school classroom had a bookcase, and I stole Mackenzie's pov book because I loved it so much. I think it's still somewhere in my bookcase to this day.

To be honest, Dork Diaries: Drama Queen was probably one of the last books in the series that I, personally, genuinely loved before my love for the series began dwindling. To see another character's perspective (and Mackenzie's viewpoint, THE Drama Queen of all people!!!) and the drastic change in artstyle (plus the calligraphy) was surprisingly amazing. Then the other books came out, Puppy Love, Frenemies, Crush Catastrophe, and Party Time. The first two felt really meh (third was kind of fun though), especially since we never get much payoff even though Brandon says, "Nikki, I REALLY like you." Why don't they ever officially get together? If they don't, why doesn't Nikki ever acknowledge the fact that she knew what he said but (possibly) had a reason as to why she never responded to his confession? It seems like some Diary book series' authors profit off of milking the stories dry. Dork Diaries characters don't age realistically- so while Nikki is 15 in the current books, in real life, she's actually 27. Not only that; she also doesn't grow as much as a character. Sure, she sees Mackenzie as a 'frenemy' and went so far as to being nice to her, but she kinda stays the same in some ways. Whiny, overdramatic and ungrateful characteristics get old once the readers mature. So when younger readers get into the series', they may not realise how Nikki could be just as mean as Mackenzie sometimes (even though she does have some good in her). Regardless, the comforting vibe of Dork Diaries probably stems from nostalgia; from discovering a copy for the first time from a friend who recieved it as a present, to discussing hair colours of the characters while crayoning the illustrations. Plus the covers are colourful and the unrealistic storylines are fun to get through despite some of the questionable choices some characters make. As the books went on, a lot of my friends who used to read these books eventually stopped reading it. Finally, when I was getting around to lending a copy of Party time to my friends and read that book in class, I got to the 'wE dID cOoL FoRTnItE dANcEs' pages and took one look at the illustrations of the characters dabbing... And I cracked up. Showed it to my friend- who also burst out laughing. It took ONE cringey page for me to finally let go of Dork Diaries.
I really hope the series will continue when she goes to high school, i would cry if it ended now. I’ve been reading these books since I was a little child. It’s not a phase, it’s a lifestyle
I was obsessed with these books so much i started writing my own diary in the style of Nikki's, with the SQUEEE notes and everything. but based around my daily life so it wasn't the most interesting read. I related to Nikki on the surface level of being dorky and not having that many friends i think so the books were very important to childhood me lmao.

This ENTIRE series was literally me and my best friend’s ENTIRE 4th/5th grade years of school. We would each borrow the same copy of the same entry of the series, read it and then obsess over it for like an entire month. I liked the books as a kid (Forgot why, but I guess it was an escape for me into a fantasy that isn’t mine) and I still appreciate them, but if I’m especially bored, I take a random book from the series and rewrite it from a point of realism, as brutally as possible, or break every single archetype rule of as many characters I see in the book and write something from there. It’s a very fun storytelling/writing exercise, messing around with books/stories you’ve liked as a kid, realizing they could be different, and imagining then through your own eyes

exactly!! i feel like since the books came out on like a yearly basis for a while, maybe updating the pop culture references and stuff was the author's way of keeping things relevant with whatever generation the series would've been targeting at that time but i genuinely feel like the series would've benefited sooo much from the timeline being kept consistent with the late 2000s, esp with the relatively recent resurgence of 2000s aesthetics and whatnot - i feel like instead, the series has just ended up with no discernible setting in terms of time which is honestly kind of a shame :(

I loved reading Dork Diaries as a teen. I've always thought Mackenzie should get her spin-off book series, basically in Mackenzie's POV for every previous Dork Diaries book that featured her in big roles. And it could be drawn in the same style that Mackenzie did in that book where she stole Nikki's diary, but Mackenzie would get her own diary somehow. And they would be called... the Diva Diaries, and the covers would be all in leopard print.
I would honestly LOVE that bcs I was actually obsessed with Mackenzie's drawing style in that book, especially the part where she was choosing the outfits to school. I used to stare at them for hourssss she's honestly really talented I'm kinda wishing for her redemption arc lol

It's a teenager POV book, all girls either go through a spoilt mean girl phase or a pick me girl phase. That's what I liked about the series. We saw Mackenzie's POV about her issues, and rn Nikki might be having this celebrity disease. I hope to see a character development tho. Brandon best boy!!!

To be honest, Dork Diaries: Drama Queen was probably one of the last books in the series that I, personally, genuinely loved before my love for the series began dwindling.
To see another character's perspective (and Mackenzie's viewpoint, THE Drama Queen of all people!!!) and the drastic change in artstyle (plus the calligraphy) was surprisingly amazing. Then the other books came out, Puppy Love, Frenemies, Crush Catastrophe, and Party Time. The first two felt really meh (third was kind of fun though), especially since we never get much payoff even though Brandon says, "Nikki, I REALLY like you." Why don't they ever officially get together? If they don't, why doesn't Nikki ever acknowledge the fact that she knew what he said but (possibly) had a reason as to why she never responded to his confession?
It seems like some Diary book series' authors profit off of milking the stories dry. Dork Diaries characters don't age realistically- so while Nikki is 15 in the current books, in real life, she's actually 27. Not only that; she also doesn't grow as much as a character. Sure, she sees Mackenzie as a 'frenemy' and went so far as to being nice to her, but she kinda stays the same in some ways. Whiny, overdramatic and ungrateful characteristics get old once the readers mature. So when younger readers get into the series', they may not realise how Nikki could be just as mean as Mackenzie sometimes (even though she does have some good in her). Regardless, the comforting vibe of Dork Diaries probably stems from nostalgia; from discovering a copy for the first time from a friend who recieved it as a present, to discussing hair colours of the characters while crayoning the illustrations. Plus the covers are colourful and the unrealistic storylines are fun to get through despite some of the questionable choices some characters make.
As the books went on, a lot of my friends who used to read these books eventually stopped reading it. Finally, when I was getting around to lending a copy of Party time to my friends and read that book in class, I got to the 'wE dID cOoL FoRTnItE dANcEs' pages and took one look at the illustrations of the characters dabbing... And I cracked up. Showed it to my friend- who also burst out laughing. It took ONE cringey page for me to finally let go of Dork Diaries.
I really hope the series will continue when she goes to high school, i would cry if it ended now. I’ve been reading these books since I was a little child. It’s not a phase, it’s a lifestyle

I was obsessed with these books so much i started writing my own diary in the style of Nikki's, with the SQUEEE notes and everything. but based around my daily life so it wasn't the most interesting read. I related to Nikki on the surface level of being dorky and not having that many friends i think so the books were very important to childhood me lmao.

I liked the books as a kid (Forgot why, but I guess it was an escape for me into a fantasy that isn’t mine) and I still appreciate them, but if I’m especially bored, I take a random book from the series and rewrite it from a point of realism, as brutally as possible, or break every single archetype rule of as many characters I see in the book and write something from there. It’s a very fun storytelling/writing exercise, messing around with books/stories you’ve liked as a kid, realizing they could be different, and imagining then through your own eyes
