@merlinmichaeshepherd Of course you can produce "laughing" effect on closed classical mouthpiece but it is more difficult because it doesn't give you much freedom of bending the notes. The more opened the mouthpiece and the softer the reed the more bending you can produce. Thats why armenian, greek, turkish folk clarinetists use very soft reeds and opened mouthpieces. Hey Oleg, I recorded many CDs playing Klezmer Music using a Vandoren Austrian lay mouthpiece. This is a very closed and profoundly classical mouthpiece. I used a #4 Austrian cut reed on it and could make all the "laughing" and other ornaments that I wanted to. It's not about the mouthpiece it's about what you do on it.
Profile 88 gives you the convenience of holding it in the mouth. The difference is the outer shape of mouthpiece only so it is not really affects on tone or glissando.. I personally like the classic profile. For the Greek music you need German system clarinet, as it is more convenient in terns if fingering and tone is better for this kind of music.

And I have just realised the reason the 'laughing effect' sounds so much like a real laughter is because exactly the same mechanical process happens in the vocal folds when a person is laughing (a glissando of sorts that gradually raises the pitch of the voice followed by a sudden drop or fall). You can try and see for yourselves at home, it's quite fun....

How is the technique for the klezmer sound on clarinet different than classical/Western? I know there are a lot of ornaments and sounds like this laughing..but it seems the very sound is different..more..strident and sharp. Do you use a particular reed or a something other than Bb?
@JoeGancher It doesn't matter what he is using, it just depends on how good you can drop a note. I can only do a 1/4 step, but my band teacher can do a scale from one note.

u should all work on your voicing, once you can voice, u don't even have to move your jaw, it's almost like you are "singing" notes as you play and you can do this much easier....that is once you get the voicing down...which is sometimes frustrating to learn. i wouldn't really reccomend anyone moving their jaws for this maybe it could get inefficient? maybe not. what ever works for you! hope this helps anyone.

Use the reed number which suites you. It depends on your ambusher and the mouthpiece. Try several reeds and choose the best you like.
