Congratulations on your ability to have Tito still, into his adult state. In my youth I had one as a pet, and he was never aggressive to me, as I handled him every day. I found that his friendliness did not extend beyond myself, as he eventually bit a family member and my father took him away. I agree with you, that they are basically not a domesticated animal, and the majority of folks do not have the time, or your ability to understand what it takes to care for them, like you do. Wishing you continued success with him.

The Truth, The Whole truth, and Nothing but The Truth... well said.
I have 4 raccoons left (one old, gentle male, and 3 females) and probably 10 kits I haven't seen yet. They are "sort-of-pets" in that they all know me and come to me when they hear my voice in the evening but hide if anyone else is there. They live in the wild along a creek on my property or in a barn next to the creek. I had 14 raccoons (mostly last year's kits) but most of them left when mating season arrived. I feed them 7 nights a week at 2 hay barns about 2 miles apart, but not enough to make it un-neccessary for them to go get their own food (one cup of Purina Dog food, 2 small eggs, and a small handful of crunchy Cheetos for desert). They are totally free to come and go and we have a good relationship with each other. Last year one of the mamas brought her kits to show me in a barn for about 10 minutes and I didn't see them again for about 2 months. I think of them as pets because they totally trust me and I respect them ( I keep my hands away from them). I have 4K cameras in the barns to watch them at home. NO, they are not an inside pet for everybody, not even me, and I do have the time and patience to handle one as a house pet but seeing them outdoors in their own element is more precious to me because they get to be themselves, and I can still see them anytime I want.

I have the same situation. I've got a mama with four kits. She had five but she's a nasty old mother and always growles at her babies and leaves them to fend for themselves. She's missing an eye so I feed her rotisserie chicken because she can't see like at all. Her kits love the chicken and eggs and corn on the cob. I've got about 8 racoons in the woods behind me. I love to see them come out at evening or night when I call them. They won't go past the wood line as they are very wild which is good. The babies are so adorable right now. But the mom fights them for the food I put out. She's a bytch. I hope she doesn't have any more babies. She's a bad mom.

@@honey_skulls1237 That is completely false. The difference between cats and dogs is that cats do not get attached to humans like dogs do. Living circumstances has nothing to do with it. Cats are curious by nature and if you let them wander once they will keep doing it. That's why a lot of people dont even let them out of the house. That's also not healthy for a cat.

    Excellent video!!
We fostered a week-old baby coonie (mother was hit by a car). Bad Baby Bradley was an adorable holy terror! He played with our ferret (who did the hard work of "entertaining" Bradley) and quickly discovered the joy of cookies and catfood. We had no intention of keeping the little beastie as a pet; just allowing him to become an adult and capable of fending for himself.
Bradley the Butthead tore the screens off the windows so he could hang out on the roof, chased our car whenever we left home and got into all the food he could reach. When he went back to the rehabber (at about six months old) he took over the entire place and eventually escaped and moved down to the stream with a girlfriend. The two of them came up to the rehabber's house and begged food for years.
He was a handful, but we loved the funny little comedian to bits! Think of a pet raccoon as Robin Williams on speed while wearing a trash panda suit and you'll get the idea.

You're correct about the level of care they require, and not everyone is able to give them what they need. I wish more people thought more about the animal's needs than their own selfish desires.

I’ve been thinking about getting a raccoon in a couple years, they’re such smart animals and some of them have such nice personalities, it’s like where some hamsters just sleep all day and don’t play meanwhile some are so playful and and will notice you as someone they trust. I’ve been doing research for some time now. This video is so helpful. :)

My boy RJ was a total sweetheart, but our situation was different. We found RJ on the side of the road as a very young adult (he could see and walk but still extremely young) he had been hit by something and had a broken jaw and hand, bottom jaw completely snapped in half. I think the fact we nursed him back to health after the transition he was very warm to us. I was maybe 9 years old and he never hurt me or tried to. We kept him in our garage and left a side door open for him to go outside when he wanted. He ended up leaving to go have a family of his own and even brought his kits to our backyard one night. We had to move soon afterwards so I'm glad he found his family. Having a raccoon in California would be a lot harder then having one in a highly forested town in Oregon.

Thanks, for a VERY informative video. Of course, here in the USA, it's not legal to keep "rackies" as pets. I have a whole group who know me and come with new babies every year. All my neighbors are afraid of them, tell me I'll get rabies because "ALL raccoons have rabies"....blah. I use care, feed the mammas when they come to visit....jumbo marshmallows are a favorite....I love all creatures, but raccoons are my favorite. My mom has a piece of property where a local rehabber releases raccoons that have been cared for......Just wish everyone would have an open mind. Great video, Mitchell!

I’m from Costa Rica, I rescue one baby close eyes raccoon from a man that found in his house and he want to kill him.
I got it with 1-2 weeks of life and 3 days ago he opened his eyes and so far he’s very healthy, your videos are very helpful.
Probably I will keep him as a pet because nobody from zoo and those organizations want him because they are considered as plague.
Isn’t easy and I know is just starting but has been an amazing experience. I going to build in my room a big house like your Tito’s bed with toys, sticks and other stuff.

I am so glad that you're such a responsible pet owner, enough to explain to people the ups and downs of raccoons. I had raccoons chew into my attic, a mother and four juveniles, from her previous litter. I couldn't harm them so I engaged a company that removes them from your house and they release them on farms. The have written agreements with farmers that had a lot of acreage. I learned quite a bit about raccoons, and they are really very, very intelligent and fascinating creatures, and yes, very cute, but as you said, they can be very aggressive as they age. Also, if you remove them from your attic, and drop them a few miles away, they will find their way back to your house. The couple I hired has been removing them from residences for about 30 years and I learned quite a bit, and most people, as you say, aren't ready for the aggressive raccoon, and they have teeth of steel. They can also be very dangerous if you have other pets.
They told me even when they release them, they just don't calmly walk out of the cage, they sometimes can turn and come after you, if they become agitated in any way, and no, you never want to make pets of them unless you're ready to take on a lot of responsibility. They also carry diseases which is another downside...so, I'm thankful to see you explain that to people so they forget about the ''cuteness" and understand they just aren't long term pets unless you really know how to handle them, and what to expect.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this, Mitchell. Indeed, they are ADVANCED LEVEL PETS. I had Rockett and everybody was saying she will kill your cats, your chickens, she will bite your fingers off, etc etc etc. I had an office mate whose grandparents had one and was telling me the story that their cats were all called tripods. I asked why and he said because the raccoon would grab the cats paws thru the cage when the cats would walk on its cage outside, and this is how the cats lost their legs. Well, none of those happened with my Rockett not because I trained her not to do it but because she grew up with kittens and cats and dogs in the house with her AND SHE WAS NEVER CAGED. I am against caging ANY animal. She grew up walking around the house. And contrary to what people said that she was going to eat my house out and chew thru the walls, well, that never happened. I never had a cable, wall or door or cabinet chewed out. But she climbed EVERYTHING. The only thing I did was child-proof the kitchen cabinets. None of my cats or Rockett were ever allowed on the counters or tables and they know it. Cats learned that easily but not as easily did Rockett because I understand that she had to practice her climbing if she ever was to survive the wild when and if she ever leaves us. I still tell her that she cannot climb the counters and I just mildly and softly tell her "NO" and carry her off gently. I never restrained her natural behavior and instincts, but I did redirected it. I gave her plenty of toys and stuff to chew on, I had two (2) 6 ft cat towers that she learned to climb on with the kittens, I would bring her out in my yard and she would follow us religiously, I brought her to a dwarf maple tree in my front yard and encouraged her to climb it (along with the kittens growing up with her). I never restrained her behavior growing up. Of course, they are raccoons so I did have my share of scratches and bites but they were more because either we were playing and she got carried away, or she expressed her dislike for something and I did not pay attention. Animals are effing smart and they will let you know. You will just have to learn to listen and respect. There were times she gets really aggressive during play and what I did, which worked, was run away from her and we would run around the house, with her close on my heels. I would be laughing and all but in her own smart way, she realizes that I did not like bites and scratches. They do get mellow after one year old, but till then, they do get in this biting and scratching phase, which I never discouraged but redirected it to practice on my dogs. My dogs love her until she gets carried away, then they yelp and respond in a manner that tells Rockett it hurt them but never too much that they hurt Rockett. They also taught Rockett that way what hurts. By 11 months old, she decided on her own to not come back into the house with us anymore. She stays in my backyard and would once in a while come in. I have cats and chickens and ducks outside but NONE of them has been hurt by Rockett. I do feed my cats outside and she shares their food. I know someday she might not come back anymore but for now, I enjoy her comings and goings and saying hello to me. I still get to kiss her little black nose and hug her and I know I will miss her soooo bad once she starts not coming around to see her mommy someday. Yes, I CAN HUG HER AND KISS HER FACE. They are smart and loving and given the chance again, I will rescue another once again.

Do racoons need to get annual vaccinations (such as rabies) like a domestic dog or cat would receive? Is it difficult to find a veterinarian that is willing to care for a raccoon? This was a great video, you should make this into a series talking more about raccoon ownership. It would be a really great resource on the realities of racoons care and ownership 🙌

    • @TitoTheRaccoon

Thank you for making all these informative videos! The amount of ignorance and misinformation and pure stupidity pertaining to raccoons is preposterous and frustrating.
For example: a ridiculous amount of actual adult individuals actually believe all raccoons have rabies. They apparently think it's just a thing they're all born with... Wtf?! Really?
Or that raccoons are definitely rabid if they're seen out in the daytime because they're strictly noctournal. (Not. True. At. All.)
Or that raccoons are naturally savage and vicious, just waiting to attack just because they can. (No.)
So I'm glad and grateful Mr. Tito is being presented and shared with the masses; both you and Tito are helping save the lives of innocent raccoons by sharing facts and giving people a glimpse into the lives, personalities, and true nature of one of the most precious, glorious, hilarious, and intelligent animals on Earth.
I also hope people are wise enough to heed your warnings and advice when it comes to "ownership" of a "pet raccoon". Regardless of words or video, people still have no idea what it's REALLY like to have a raccoon family member! They aren't, can't, and won't ever be "pets"... They're just additions to the family tree. No raccoon is going to submit to the lowly position of pet but will gladly treat you as THEIR pet if given a chance! 😂
Caring for one of these rascals is NOT something the vast majority of people would or could handle. Its more than a full time job, it's round the clock, 365 days per year. You have to constantly keep them entertained or they'll Kindly entertain themselves with a good amount of demolition in one form or fashion. They love to play and play ROUGH, they don't ever grow outta that. Expect to look like a suicidal loon due to your bloody scabbed appendages. They'll also burglarize you when you're not looking, might ruin your favorite shirt... Or wall...
They're like being responsible for a non-verbal permanent toddler on crack with magical climbing skills and a propensity for doing bizarre stunts. Far fewer people are equipped and prepared to care for a raccoon than they think.

A buddy of mine had a raccoon for a pet and the little guy was adorable but yeah he played rough.
But what I found funny is he slept in my buddies room and when the alarm clock would go off he would
go around and slap everyone in the face me included as I was sleeping on the couch that night, and jump
in a chair and wait for his breakfast lol.
Oh and his name was Jake, and they had him because his mother was killed by a car and even they said
you need to be a very patient person to have a raccoon and be very understanding.

I've raised 2 raccoons, one boy and one girl, separated by one year in age, they were very young and lost their moms. They developed exactly as you described, but they have very different personalities. The boy remained clingy as he grew older but the female was much more independent and hard to handle as she went through the 7 month switch. The female was much more "bitey" and stole my stuff and destructive. I had them both spayed/neutered and completely veted. I released them on my 140 acre farm and the female is the one that comes back to me every night. And like you described they do calm down after a while. I leave a window unlocked but closed to my utility room every night and she knows this. So she comes by every night and opens the window and eats her favorite treat, pecans, and her crunchy food. She and my 8 cats are good buddies and if she shows up early enough for me to see her she still romps and plays with me. I love that thing they do that looks like they're spinning as they run. Now that she's 3 years old shes very easy to play with and she has complete freedom to live in the wild but still sees me as her mom or a member of her family. And she is so gorgeous like Tito. I have lots of wild raccoons come through the farm and they look pretty rough, you can tell Tito and my Pepper are well cared for by just looking at them. I'm hoping Pepper continues to come visit me for the rest of her long healthy life.

My parents raised a rescued crow for 2 years and the best thing that happened to them is that he flew away one day. It was a great experience, we were sad, but it was almost a full time job!
