Know this is going to sound cheesy, but watching brought a few years to my eyes. This game was such a big part of my childhood and at times one of the few places I was able to find validation at a time where I was seriously depressed. Hearing the music made me smile and brought back the joy and sense of accomplishment that came along with perfectly timing powerslides to beat the computer after making a big mistake. I knew my worth here, I knew that these tracks belonged to me that in this virtual space I was a legend behind the wheel.

It became the (20)00s, (20)10s, and soon (20)20s. I guess the names of the years aren't 'catchy' and there's more stylization and no single 'style' to describe this time now. And with most of the focus on technology and equality, there's less focus on 'style of the decade'.
Like how the car idle noise @ 1:44 was probably sampled off some worn out old Honda in Namco's car park. Tired sounding belt pulley/tensioner lol not exactly what you hear on a highly tuned well looked after idling racing engine
The detail in this opening is superb. It's hard to see it in the video but when the Assoluto car starts moving after picking up Nagase the car kicks up dust on the road. Also the feint left to the middle was also a masterful show of racing skill in a video game.
I use to test this intro for my Home Theater System back in the days in 1999 and 2000. What a feeling it was when you hear the car engine's bass in surround sound.

Watching this in 2018 and what's really striking me is the "Welcome to the World of Ridge Racer" at the end. I sunk hundreds of hours into this game as a kid and distinctly I remember the game really building it's own world and pulling you into it -- even having story with characters and a team to care about was unheard of at the time. Not to mention everything else about this game, from the style to the soundtrack, complemented the racing and the atmosphere in an absolute flawless way. This game desperately needs a remake, or the series at least needs to go in this direction again. And again, that soundtrack...perfection. Are there any artists or genres out there today that are making this type of music?

Whilst Namco might never have equalled the simulation aspects of Gran Turismo, this game was arguably far better looking. The lighting for example, was in another league when compared to Gran Turismo.

As we arrived home, neither of my cousins never touched nor garnered any interest in these games. "Lets play this." I said. "Nah..." They said. "Why?" I ask. "Cause it sucks. Its Playstation 2. That's where its at." one of them said. Them being ignorant in what they stated (this was around our kindergarden years), they decided to play nothing but sport games...yay.... After they stopped playing, they allowed me to play the console, which made me pop in this game. 0:00-0:07 begins hearing pure bliss "Whoa....." my reaction. Immediately, this became my favorite PS1 racing game not just for the awesomely soundtrack, and memorable intro; it was the gameplay that blew me away lol. i was still 2 or 3 years old back then when i used to play this game and i fell in love with the beautiful tracks and vehicles in the game but most of all reiko nagase her beauty was unmatched even though her character changed even with the newer versions of ridge racer i still looked up to her as an inspiration for playing ridge racer at a young age

That 90's beat with the AMAZING intro cutscene for its time. It still looks realistic to me hehe. But the music with this intro is too kickass. Might go ahead and say to make a remake of this.
I would never ever forget this intro after I slapped this game into my PlayStation. Every time this plays, sometimes I skip it and most of the times I didn't for obvious reasons. Boy, Reiko was so hot, and the music was very cool too. I also find it so sweet for the driver to pick her up while in the middle of the race when he is possibly in the lead. Such great memories I had with this game.
Funny thing I never had this game but I had Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (best racing game ever made) But I went a friend of mine house and he had this game.. I saw the intro and I never forgot that day!! Best intro ever and I feel in love with the girl! My friend had to leave the house just a bit and all I did was restart the PS1 non stop 😂

I never had Gran Turismo for the PS1. But I didn't mind one bit, I was perfectly fine with R4, love that game.
i was still 2 or 3 years old back then when i used to play this game and i fell in love with the beautiful tracks and vehicles in the game but most of all reiko nagase her beauty was unmatched even though her character changed even with the newer versions of ridge racer i still looked up to her as an inspiration for playing ridge racer at a young age

I remember playing this game constantly, and not once did i skip the intro, it was that awesome.
That 90's beat with the AMAZING intro cutscene for its time. It still looks realistic to me hehe. But the music with this intro is too kickass. Might go ahead and say to make a remake of this.
I would never ever forget this intro after I slapped this game into my PlayStation. Every time this plays, sometimes I skip it and most of the times I didn't for obvious reasons.
Boy, Reiko was so hot, and the music was very cool too. I also find it so sweet for the driver to pick her up while in the middle of the race when he is possibly in the lead.
Such great memories I had with this game.

But I went a friend of mine house and he had this game.. I saw the intro and I never forgot that day!! Best intro ever and I feel in love with the girl! My friend had to leave the house just a bit and all I did was restart the PS1 non stop 😂

I recently bought this game and had never played it before and when I was watching this intro I was amazed at how good it was. I even started to question when this game was made. 12 years... This is a really good game. My fav Ridge Racer game now.
