One of the best racing games for PS1. Though not the best Ridge Racer games out there (IMO thank you). Everything about R4 is different compared to its predecessors or successors.
it was the racing game that got me interested in cars when I was only 5. i'm planning to wrap my next car in the R.T. Solavlou livery, it's either an integra DC5 type R or Celica GTFour, Though I'm not sure on which one of the two to get yet.
For all those young'uns out there, Ridge Racer Type 4 was MIND BLOWING at the time. The graphics, music, the cinematics, the animation was absolutely ART for the time. While not much today, Reiko's animation when her shoe break, her hair in the wind, the movement of her skirt, her sigh, her facial expression, all that was the TOP OF THE TOP at the time. One of the best displays of Video-game as an Art. EDIT: Reading other comments, I'm glad to see a lot of people think the same. ❤️

I grew up playing this game (I played it from about 3 years old until I was 10 if I remember correctly) and this game was so good some of my EARLIEST memories are of playing it.
I agree with you two, too! I miss when games had so much class and love poured to them. When games used to be fun. These masterpieces might have been forgotten by the newer generations but they will always be iconic representations of a great era.
RRT4 was the game that introduced me to the world of Drifting back when I was a kid. Although the drifting mechanics in the game itself felt crude and sluggish, they were onto something for sure.
RRT4 is one of the strongest arguments for the "videogames are art" claim. It is so masterfully crafted in all of its aspects, the results of divine inspiration and good experience with the hardware, as it came out towards the twilight of the PS1 era. Namco was absolutely on top of the game back then, releasing behemoths the likes of Tekken 3, RRT4 and Ace Combat 3 in three consecutive years. I'm envious of those that saw that unfold before their eyes, as I could merely catch up with these games way past their prime.
Reiko Nagase really resembles Ryoko Hirosue and apparently the game designer was inspired by her look. Google her if you love the character. She’s over 40 now but she’s still beautiful and kicking it.
fell in love with Ridge Racer Type 4 intro, always repeat it couple times before i press start just for the music, cinematic and Reiko Nagase :). for me it's the best RR franchise intro till now followed by R: Racing Evolution
yeah, if subscribed to MULTIPLAYER thing on consoles. At least they made PS1 Legend of Dragoon available for purchase on PS4, but not RR 2 PSP. Great bussines model overall, clap clap sony
I remember how much of a big deal RR4 was when it came out, a console magazine (maybe PSM) even did a scene-by-scene preview of the intro with screenshots. Good times! But RAGE RACER will forever be in my heart. I spent so many hours on that game... stellar soundtrack too

Bro, there's a track in Ridge Racer 6 and 7 called airport lap, you can see civilian Neucom and General Resource airliners, some of the cars are sponsored by both brands, there's even a billboard in ace combat 7 announcing a brand new car called Terrazi Gaia(Terrazi is a RR brand). So yeah, with all these details, i think it's really the same universe
As a 17 years old who didn't grew up with Ridge Racer but grew up with the same style of Racing games and other games I just would love to see Ridge Racer back ! I'm tired of Need For Speed or Forza its the same thing every game ! If Ridge Racer returns it would change that !
in real life, it seems possible to me to ask them to do something for ridgeracer. just after in less than 24 hours they answered me with a positive answer and a few months later they finally made a port of the psp version in the psplus premium subscription. And I recently asked to distribute the soundtrack of the ridge racer franchise on platforms like spotify, youtube music, .. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the game and if they really do it I think that the ridge racer community this manifesto to revive the franchise
Studios are made of people, the last mainline RR game came out in 2006, I'm fairly sure most of the staff that worked on that game have already left the studio.
Rage Racer and RRT4 are ones i dearly want in a compilation if they decide to re-release the series. The ost is also very nice. Still rocking Urban Fragments intro song from RRT4 while driving in my car.
R4 is a piece of history encapsulated pristinely. Not to mention a massive part of my childhood. There will never be another racing game quite like it. How I crave for a remaster.
Imagine a current gen remake of R4 using Unreal 5 and a 1 to 1 4K remake of the opening...i would do anything for an anime series with 3d style of R4 opening video.
IIRC on Ridge Racer PSP in the gallery section you could watch a collection of the intros too. For Rave Racer it says people mistook the girl for Reiko when in actual fact no one knows who she is! So Rave Racer has also been the most memorable for me due to this forgotten character.
I've never played this series yet I feel nostalgic watching all this. Games like this, especially the ps2 games evoke that style and feel that you barely see in games nowadays. Every racer these days are just sim games, when they can be so much more. Anyway like #420 reporting in lol

Goddamit Namco, you don't have to compete with Gran Turismo and the likes, RR series is great with all of its fantasy carmaker. Just release RR8 on PC and let this old man fall in love with Reiko Nagase all over again when sliding like crazy while listening to all that crazy good techno track.
They really liked to put focus on showing Reiko's feet in these openings huh She breaks a shoe in RR4, goes Barefoot in RR1, RR2, RR6, and then wears open toe heels in RR7 title screen
Back then R4 is my goto racing game on PS1, GranTurismo might be win by immersion, but R4 gameplay is much more fun racing game Feels more like Ace Combat but for racing
I remember in 2000 were there were 2 other RR models, many requested to have Nagase in RR type 4 to be back and that is why she was back in RR 2004 and many future RR sequels.
Still playing Vita RR today, and 3d on 3ds. Sometimes 5 and 7. RR6 on xbox360 was awesome, maybe better gameplay than 7, I regret highly that I sold it along with the console. EDIT: Type-4 on Vita too and found an old copy of Rage racer. It was a brilliant racing series. Dunno why the 8th entry on Switch was cancelled.
Type 4's intro is fantastic, yes, but it's also incredible how close the real-time intro of RRV comes to the fidelity of the pre rendered visuals from just 2 years prior.

The only Ridge Racer game was Ridge Racer Revolution on the PS1 (still have that game) and MAN is Unbounded such a jarring turn of tone, being all dystopian, secret society and lawlessness, rather then all about the thrill of battling the clock.
Interesting how they changed only the poster girl once and that was with Ridge Racer V. Makes me wonder why she never came back. Or shared the spotlight with Reiko.

R4 and Grand Tourismo 2 were the shit. I remember playing this on my massive 27inch TV with Quadraphonic sound system.
