It is DIY, I was unaware that the amount of machines changed that fact. Read the multitude of other comments I've replied to about this about how you could make it with only hand tools, or where to go to get access to machinery like this.
It's an instrument with ethnic roots, but that does not mean you cannot make high quality versions of it. It's like saying that violins are overkill because the Byzantine lyra was a much cruder instrument. You can definitely go the route you describe to make a kalimba, but it's not what I was going for.

Janloy Quintero The mill can be substituted with a vice and and a drill. Or a clamp and a drill to drill the ground bar. Or just use a rounded file to get the grooves. A hack saw and a drill can be used for the Brass bar. A saw some files a chisel and sand paper can be used for making the body round. The tree can be cut using a jewelry saw or with chisels. Alternatively you can just drill holes instead of doing the tree. Files can be used to round the tines. Have a good day.
CrimsonSkyz Right! Essentially a sharp rock can be used to chisel the wood as well. I am well aware there are other tools less precise that can be substituted. My point is, the finished product would be nothing similar to what you built using what you used. P.S. My day is great!

If you don't, and that's your attitude, of course you're not going to get access to it. There is a whole world outside your shared apartment, there are businesses specifializing especially in providing machines, and a space, like these for hobbyists. Look up Techshop, Makerspace, FabLab, etc etc. If you can't find any nearby, there may be schools and businesses which you could befriend and get access to. If you don't have the willpower you can of course complain in a TH-cam comment, it's much easier after all, but far less productive.

Your editing and voiceover work is excellent, and you have convinced me to build a kalimba. I have all of the tools, but the garage is a mess so I'm just going to use a cardboard box and some paperclips.
I suppose you could MacGyver a crude kalimba using half of a hollowed-out, fully dry coconut shell, a sheet of thick pressboard from broken "build it yourself" furniture, some bobby pins, and leftover pieces of picture-hanging hardware, along with a few basic hand tools. Use a drill and coping saw to cut an attractive sounding hole in the pressboard, then cut it to fit the coconut half. Sand each so they fit flush, then epoxy the edges and clamp them together. Straighten out the bobby pins and put them between two differently-sized serrated picture hangers, then screw them into the pressboard tight enough so they don't slip. Loosen the top clip enough to tune the pins to your liking, then retighten. Coat with lacquer or stain. Voila, a coconut kalimba. Go out and plunk out some "authentic Zambian love songs" (even if you're as white as corn flakes), with a Kangol hat to collect your busking money.

Bend the sides out of solid ash, white oak or hickory with a scarf joint and it'd be a lot simpler. I've also bent birch, pine and cedar, but ash is the best for bending.

This must be the most dificultly way to build a Kalimba... you can get a much better sounding Kalmba in a much easier way, without using all this big machnes.
Big machines... like... a mill or lathe? Tools that make precise work easy. How I fail to see how it would sound better using other methods that are more prone to error and more work intensive.
Okay. As I've said to many people before, if you choose to see the problems of course you're not going to be able to make it. There are many ways of being able to make this, with or without machinery. Even if you don't own the machinery, you could find places that do and use theirs. All you need to do is to think beyond the obvious.
A professional guitar maker also builds guitars by himself, they're still not considered DIY. They are considered professional guitars or custom guitars. He built a professional quality instrument with professional tools, just because he documented it in a Video does not make it a classic DIY. If Gibson made a video of some employee handmaking a 3000$ Gibson guitar, would you also consider it a DIY just because you could theoretically build it yourself ? Also i'd like to add that i'm not hating on him, he does a very good job.
Maybe to reiterate, I don't claim this to be a DIY in the sense you outline, I don't know where the belief that this is supposed to be a DIY like that came from.

You do not need any heavy tools. You need a saw, a file, a drill and some sand paper, as far as tools go. if you start out with a preexisting box (like a cigar box), you could get away with even less. Don't let lack of tools stop you, think of way around them. I didn't let not having a coconut stop me from making a kalimba after all.

Okay. As I've said to many people before, if you choose to see the problems of course you're not going to be able to make it. There are many ways of being able to make this, with or without machinery. Even if you don't own the machinery, you could find places that do and use theirs. All you need to do is to think beyond the obvious.

How is it not DIY? He made a nice version of it using expensive tools, but he also explained that you can make a simpler version without those tools.
kuaraba the definition of diy is do it yourself. Did he not make this by himself?
A professional guitar maker also builds guitars by himself, they're still not considered DIY. They are considered professional guitars or custom guitars. He built a professional quality instrument with professional tools, just because he documented it in a Video does not make it a classic DIY. If Gibson made a video of some employee handmaking a 3000$ Gibson guitar, would you also consider it a DIY just because you could theoretically build it yourself ? Also i'd like to add that i'm not hating on him, he does a very good job.
Maybe to reiterate, I don't claim this to be a DIY in the sense you outline, I don't know where the belief that this is supposed to be a DIY like that came from.

You do not need any heavy tools. You need a saw, a file, a drill and some sand paper, as far as tools go. if you start out with a preexisting box (like a cigar box), you could get away with even less. Don't let lack of tools stop you, think of way around them. I didn't let not having a coconut stop me from making a kalimba after all.

Well, he definitely has a point. From a musical standpoint it sounds quite awful. Bad mic or not, it sounds empty and non-resonant.
