Okay after many hours of struggling heres how u add the keys. Put all the keys in the bridge holes and keep the top bar in place. After set i taped the sliding buggers. Make sure the tines stick up a bit over that top bridge. Now the bottom wooden bridge thing with the metal bar. Thats going to get shoved in tine by tine sideways. The bridge will be way lowered on the instrument and pushed up after all the tines are on. I went left to right by hand, lift a tine and put it on the lower bridge. Slide said bridge over and add the next tine. Be sure to keep track that your 1st tine isnt slipping off the top brudge or its really hard to pry back on. Best of luck all
For any future readers, here’s how I did it. I’m gonna phrase things simply with minimum lingo. First attach your two wood bars to the kalimba body (but do not glue in the small metal bar, leave it off for now). Then screw in the large metal bar. Slide in each of the tines so that they’re resting on the wood on either side, going through the large metal bar in the middle. The fit should be snug but manageable. If you are having trouble getting the tines through, loosen the screws a little bit so that the large metal bar can sit a little higher. Once they’re all in, you will start sliding in the small metal bar along its wooden groove, lifting each tine one by one so that it fits underneath. This will give your tines a tight fit so they can now be tuned.
I've seen some kalimba making kits online, but with flatboard walnut bases. Cool to see how box kalimbas are made. Have not heard one made from sapele wood, the finnished product looks awesome! 🥰
You pulled out that wood and I was like “That’s too much for me, I wanted to build my kalimba out of sticks and mud..” Really cool to see you work though! Good job!
Just kind of guessing, but based on the size of his hands in comparison to the kalimba itself, I'd say it's probably about 8 inches in length, 4 inches in width, and 1 inch height. Again just a guess Edit: actually probably more like 5 inches in width
@@jakemcguire9304 Thanks for your support but I did my Kalimba 5 months ago :) I didnt found measiruments any where but I guess how much is it. Many people will have this problem, but the only thing I’m missing is the hand plane and the pull saw. I do have other tools I could substitute with though!
I beg to differ, unless you think he was going to use a cereal box and sticky tape to make it?! - he is using basic hand tools and has essentially crafted an instrument from scrap wood on a fold up workbench - watch any 'DIY' woodworking channel and they'd have used a whole bunch of power tools to do the same thing - splitting a board with a saw that accurately is no mean feat (usually done on a bandsaw) so the manner in which he has done it is eminently DIY IMO and yes I do have what's needed to make this, albeit I might go about doing some things slightly differently. It's an excellent piece of craftsmanship :)
Does anyone know wether the quality of the box is very important to the sound quality? I think it would be neat to make a kalimba out of a vintage cigar box :))
Please help!!! Would love to build this design but when trying to translate the instructions I only get gibberish from google. Anybody perhaps know if there are english instructions somewhere?

Don't bother making a wooden box and use a solid block of wood instead. It will be much easier.
