- ...five years ago, we reviewed the Full Bucket Line to see how it has held up over time in Microsoft Train Simulator. Since then, a new simulator has been developed that accomodates MSTS content. What does Open Rails contribute to the world of train simulation? We'll find out in this review...at the railyard!

I love how you brought back tunes from your previous FBL videos. At The Railyard is still a great series, and I'm glad I found it five years ago. Keep up the incredible work, Nick!
Thank you! I would never have learned of Open Rails if not for At the Railyard. This is really great for those of us who have MSTS routes that we really love yet find that MSTS crashes too often with modern operating systems....
7:35 Major throwback to Seaview review, awesome review of OR :)

Great to see you back, mate. And great to finally see this new sim in action.
Quick question: Does it require MSTS to run, or is it 100% stand-alone?
Thanks Nick! It's been a while that I was in the MSTS business (the FBL3 gets 10 this year). Your video made me re-install the good ol' stuff and add OpenRails to it. Now, off to Fort Fairfax! Cheers, Björn
the following locomotives and railcars in this video are:
C40-8
TE109 (#68)
B23-7
B30-7
GP-9 (static at Frampton turntable)
AS-616
C44-9W
SW1500 (DMCX 1)
SD60M
RDC
F7 and it's Desert rose variant
C415
and the GS-4 class
Love your editing as always, Nick! Also pleased to note inclusion of John Adorney's music :-)
I've recently discovered Open Rails after around a month ago, and I never looked back on railworks or trainz yet.
Trainz community puts me off, while Railwork's content is too expensive.
Open Rails, in my opinion at the moment, is just about the best simulator you can truly get because of its sheer freedom, simplicity and overall just a great virtual railway experience which provides a good base for development for you to enjoy with your friends.
i just got open Rails and I love it! because it has Australian trains
Even Though OR isn't as detailed or high-end as Trainz, but it's free, and its good for what it is!
A great job as always
MSTS: 2000 - 2015
Open Rails: 2013 - I hope forever.
considering it's open source, i'm sure that even if it's replaced, the new generation will be built off of open Rails.
Well that is a good thing to keep the old MSTS alive.
SteamKing2160 agreed. the only content i had an issue with though in Openrails so far was the default SD40-2, it would appear a stray backslash got in the coding. however it's location meant MSTS could still load it but would make it invisible in other programs
Yea I have a problem with some of the MSTS bodies as well. Like the invisible train consist with the Dash 9's.
SteamKing2160 yeah, at least it was an easily fixable issue (for the SD40-2 at least)
6:14 Stop..... This is bringing back too many memories
Not to say anything bad against MSTS, but I like the way this sim runs much better. It's controls feel a lot better, and more realistic. I can't tell how realistic as I have never operated the 1 to 1 version, but in a feel of 1/8 size, I can say this is VERY smooth.
I miss My train simulator
Ahh the nostalgia I really enjoyed this route I might need to find my MSTS and give it a go again and the video series was classic
Currently ORTS needs a full install of MSTS to read along with service packs. The stand alone will be self sufficent with default routes and a full installer. Right now its a small exe. file that reads your MSTS files.
Great job!
I run Donner Pass a lot and found the cab forwards had some issues with wheel slipping, if you increased the throttle too much or were on a steep grade without sanding on the wheels would slip, that all makes sense, however once the slipping started it wouldn't stop, and would keep getting faster and faster to a point where you would expect the connecting rods to just snap.
However I updated the game a few weeks ago and noticed the issue was solved, not only are the cab forwards more realistically less inclined to slip, but they also don't keep doing it.
This is why I like Open Rails, if a problem like that happened in MSTS, it would be up to the player, or the content maker to fix it or find a way around it, same with Trainz, or Run8, and depending on the problem, probably Railworks too, but for Open Rails, all I have to do is click a button and wait for a small patch to install.
Obviously there are some issues that won't be as easy to fix, for example there's a weird bug in more complex meshes for later locomotives where the external details will shift around on the model freely as if they were connected to a separate model.
This is a deeper problem that probably can't be fixed with just a simple code change, it essentially needs entirely new scripts and mesh files for the locomotives, luckily the only engine I noticed this on(Southern Pacific GS-2/6) has an Open Rails version, which probably has better compatibility.
The thin smoke looks realistic from a distance in hot climates like this route.
+Georgi Georgiev Sting: Desert Rose, also the name of the train at 8:25.
Nice to see you back Trmania. Have you something special in mind for your 100th video?
Nice review Nick! Out of curiosity, what level of superelevation do you use and did you personally upgrade your FBL scenery?
Also, just a quick note, OR's max resolution is 1920*1200.
Beautiful
And you also used the Daylight trainset!
When I put it on my routes folder (with my other stuff) it was glitchy with invisible rails, missingtexture sprites, and then OR crashed.
couple things. A: have you done a new review since Version 1.1? it improves backwards compatibility while including new features such as 3D cabs. also, how would you import the maps and trains from MSTS into the game? and what would you say the best way to set up content directories is? and where can you get to the consist editor?
I think that Pentecosta route would be a good competitor to the FBL.
Im having trouble getting content into OR. All the tutorials ive seen doesn't make sense. Can anyone simplify it?
i think there might be a pacific surfliner route being developed for railworks
can someone explain to me what the hell a timetable is?
Who else noticed the Run 8 quote?
Why is there music that would normally be in a pornographic video in here?
it would be greatly appreciated
omg pacific surfliner was relesed for railworks today :)
What name of the song in your intro video I really like that music
what was the problum with the payware pacific surfliner route
Oh my god the memory's are so painful make it stop make it stop
I got the SP 4449 open in a scenario in open rails, but it seems that the rods and the wheels move at different paces, so it ends up looking all wired, if anyone has a fix, please tell me. Thanks.
+SP Railfan That issue only recently came about when OpenRails was updated to v1.0, and after bringing this up on the trainsim forums, it seems the issue, just as with the 844 by the same author, boils down to an inherently flawed model. I've considered letting the author know about this, but I'd rather leave that up to someone who has experience in modeling.
Nick, is there a forum or group that hosts sessions on the FBL or other routes?
probably yes
hope someone does this for fsx soon
i want the old surfliner vidio as well as new :(
Hey man, what is the name of the music starting around 08:15? Thanks. :)
+Georgi Georgiev Desert Rose by Sting.
why is the original surfliner vidio off your channel
whats the best place to get freeware rw locomotives and cars
Please do a review of Rogers Pass for MSTS
thanks
If you dont have MSTS, are there going to be any locomotives already in OR?
No
DemoModel1 (Edinburgh-Glasgow) comes with a class 27 and a passenger train for it, you can get other trains by selecting different times in timetable mode
you will get a british train and get free australian stuff
I cant figure out how to download msts routes for open rails. Some one help.
OR involves a lot of filework.
0:38 WOA WOA WOA WHY THE GERMAN ENGINE IN AMERICAN ROUTE?
The route is actually fictional. It could be in The Sahara or in America.
well, the FBL could be set in Libya due to the fact there's almost no trains since the 60's, and also, this locomotive is actually the class 130/te109, they were built in the ex-USSR by Voroshilovgrad/Luhansk Locomotive Factory and exported to other countries between 1973 and 1982
How do you detach the camera in MSTS and OR?
7 in MSTS, 8 in Open Rails.
***** Doesn't work for me. Where can I change the settings?
***** Works in OR, but how do I move forward in free cam?
Aljaz Skarlovnik
In MSTS, you need to add the "Yard Camera" to all tiles. There are tutorials online if you search "MSTS Yard Camera". For Open Rails, use the Page Up & Page Down keys.
Tnx

great reveiw could you please do the RF&P route for msts avalible at train sim.com for free

oh, I forgot, it's the C415
I do believe I can answer that, it is outdated...the route has been made better.
