Debunking James Tour’s Latest Pathetic Series (Part 3 of 4)

  • James Tour is back at it again, folks! He didn't like my response to his ridiculous series on abiogenesis, exposing him as a complete fraud with no clue what he's talking about on this topic. After some time off to lick his wounds, he's returned with another hot pile of stylized garbage, which means it's time to show in even greater detail not just how stupid James is when he attempts to discuss this topic, but also what an unbelievably malicious liar he is. Let's go through the new series and highlight all the lies and all the stupid together, shall we?
    In this Part 3 we talk about all of Jim's lies regarding Steve Benner. James can't even get his profession right, so it's off to a bad start immediately. We quickly get to the 13C-NMR spectrum that James can't read to save his life, and how his entire analysis crumbles because of it, and then we move on to some other research of Benner's that James fumbles horribly because he never learned basic geology and doesn't even understand the materials that are involved. It's really pathetic. Oh, we also explain why chiral-induced spin selectivity is not something James should ever be bringing up at all because it's irrelevant, his lies about DAP not being prebiotically relevant, and we debunk some bullshit "paradoxes" that don't mean anything. Lots of great stuff in here.

The flerfer clearly not knowing wtf he was talking about objected to the method of one example by saying, "spectroscopy needs to be in a container!" That makes no sense! Wtaf?! Lol. Anyway, it's kind of a meme among the crowd who heard the debate.

  • @Nothingseen

    I realized, when James was showing that spectra analysis and going "If you're a synthetic chemist, you'll laugh" that... dude's desperate to be respected, huh. He's pretending that his flock are all just like him, professional scientists who think the same way he does, instead of anti-science zealots who want to strip funding from schools and universities. It's why he gets so *mad* when people criticize him from the angle Dave's been, attacking his competence and ability to read papers, because it hits him right in the sorest spot he's got; the fact that he's thrown away all his credibility to give talks at megachurches.
    Your followers aren't your people, James. They don't know what you're saying. They're not synthetic chemists, nor are they any type of professional scientist at all. They're looking for any reason to justify their distrust of education and their desire to use political power to influence the direction research takes. You're never going to gain credibility with them, man. Stop.

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains

    • @Nothingseen
      @Nothingseen ปีที่แล้ว +64

      @@ProfessorDaveExplains I mean, it's gotta be! He can't come to an accurate conclusion because the accurate one invalidates something he's absorbed too tightly, that people doing Origin of Life research are all jokes and clowns and don't know anything. I think that's why he ignores the obvious things that he does. If researchers used glass with magnesium for the very reason he thinks they washed it, his understanding of their competence is wrong. If they really did get Ribose the way they said they did, they're making real concrete progress in understanding the mechanisms behind the origin of life. So instead, none of that happened. Our capability for self-delusion is never to be underestimated, after all.
      I hope these are cathartic for you. I get the feeling you're the kind of guy who likes this sort of shit, rather than gets exhausted by it. Your trajectory from making a short video about how the flat earth lacks explanatory power to a personal back and forth with a dark-money funded evangelical political outlet has gotta be fuckin' weird to think about. They're all the same guy, too! Every step along the way has been the same smug prick who thinks that he's just managed to out-think entire disciplines and that nobody has ever considered the things his magnificent brain has. They've puffed their heads full of hot air.

      @Nothingseen that's his prerogative, though. You say his followers don't understand this. I'm no scientist, and some stuff may go over my head, but I can grasp the concept of the sciences Dave's presenting and clearly demonstrated contradictions. For me, I can use this piece of information in my personal life to make certain decisions on who to believe and what to be weary about when it comes to accurate information on topics I'm trying to understand. But overall, the point is that this is Dave's channel. Try as much as you want, but Dave's gotta do what Dave's gotta do.

    My biggest complaint about Tour's rhetoric (apart from the clear lies and dishonesty) is his insane criteria for OoL researchers. He has set up his rhetoric such that he can never lose (to the eyes of his scientifically illiterate cult). He can always point to one of two things:
    a) Dirty NMR
    b) Relay synthesis / purchasing reagents / doing chemistry in pure solutions / purification or isolation of intermediates
    He expects OoL researchers to do both--use crude mixtures at each step, and get clean NMR. He knows an organic chemist cannot achieve both in virtually all cases relevant to OoL. So he can almost always point to either of these, and then just pretend the rest of the paper is bunk.

    • @Angelmou
      @Angelmou ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Actually it is like schools work (not necessarily how universities do). Good teachers break down if something was misunderstood and correct it, not necessarily to humiliate a student in front of a class (if he/she was not intentionally lying like James does a lot of times) but to avoid common traps in understanding and miscommunication. The videos here have a double function: To recognize dishonest strategies by ID/creationists and to teach just as byproduct steps of abiogenesis and active research results.
      In the debunks Dave shows some misunderstandings that could arise, while teaching the real deal. Debunk videos about flatearth, creationism etc. are also a basic way to teach where laypeople get deceived into. James for example at 39 minutes here yet again actively confuses already evolved endosymbiotic cells (billion years younger in age) with rna world structures. He himself does so out of being nefarious for an religious agenda BUT that is the basic thing: Believing Laypeople really wish to have a supersimplified view and authorities to comfort them in their false ideas that a whole complicated modern cell or even a complete lizard is slithering out of a puddle...so that they could in their mind dismiss uncomfortable facts (for their faith) and James is trying to sell on that. Like some laypeople in the globedenial influence sphere wish for solely emotional reasons that we ain't on a spinning ball rushing through the endless vaste of space without a driver in charge, but that they would be in the center of a pencake earth that is hold in 2 hands of a deity to guide and move them to a specific goal.
      It is important to show that the supposed authorities are charlatans, that the people have to be less sentimental and emotional and that they must engage in learning a lot of stuff to have a more proper view about these topics.

      The U.S. has a tenure system. Once a professor goes through a rigorous vetting process, it becomes nearly impossible to fire a person without them breaking serious crimes. The original point of the system is to prevent firing somebody over unpopular political views, or controversial series. For example, in the U.S. the racist political party wants to ban history of African Americans. Recently the University of North Carolina hired a Pulitzer Prize winner for a tenure-track professor position. She was interested in doing a major history project on the slave industry in the United States. The racists wanted to censor this, so they forced the University to fire her before she was awarded her tenureship, and it would have been much more controversial to fire her.
      Now the downside of the tenure system is that ever know and then some jerk like Tour will abuse it. The moment they get tenure they'll stop doing research. Or do the bare minimum teaching. And just do enough to collect their check each month and retire with their pensions. In some cases they'll even start selling snake oil using their university credentials to con gullible people, like Tour is doing. And the University knows this but can't really do anything about it, without harming their own tenure system and the decent professors who benefit from it.

Folks like Tour simply have to poke imaginary holes in science, or point out science does not understand something, plausibly demonstrating to them science cannot be an inerrant source of truth. And to them, simple testimony is credible evidence, just like the Bible is credible. Testimony is more credible than scientific evidence. They believe in apostles and prophets, and they believe the word of god. Tour's testimony as a godly man is always going to outweigh scientific evidence in their minds.

      This made me smile but also wonder. I concluded Dave would NEVER. I'm responding lightheartedly, I don't know him, but running the thought experiment, I couldn't find the conditions that would make Dave walk away from finishing the job.
      Not of destroying Tour, but his arguments. Best Tour'd get after what he's pulled is Dave insisting on recording a detailed apology that allows zero face-saving for James --- so not only would JT have to say sorry while explaining his motivations/reasons in detail + correcting his record for each specific point he misled/doubled down on, but also I doubt Dave would accept anything less than a sincere grovelling heartfelt apology to each of the OoL-professionals JT maligned.
      But it was a fun thought experiment & I loved it, so thanks! If anyone thinks of the contrition conditions that'd save Tour from Part 4 please let us know!

    Hello, Dave,
    This is a great debunking series. I think it is clear that what motivates James Tour and others like him is to find a way to discredit the vast amount of good science pertaining to the origin of life on Earth and life in general is to prove that the Christian Bible is inerrant, even the first words of Genesis (I'll explain the reasons below). Life is a chemical process and the chemistry behind life is very complicated, so it is easy for mountebanks and frauds to use the layperson's lack of knowledge to use references and language that seeks to confuse the person into thinking that the chemistry of life is so complicated that only a Maker is able to put it together, which is to say that the frauds engage in a question-begging fallacy.
    I am a practicing Catholic and I can tell you that I believe many Catholics and many other Christians (with a few exceptions, like Behe) don't believe the Bible is a scientific book nor that it was intended to be a science book. Most of us Christians (Catholics, Orthodox, etc.) don't believe that one error in the Bible means the whole Bible is wrong; that's a fundamentalist position which most of us Christians do not take, but for historical reasons, seems prevalent among many Christians in the U.S. The reason why fundamentalist Christians believe the Bible is true in every word is because they believe God wrote the Bible himself (it is the true word of God) and that a single word deemed incorrect would mean the Salvation story could also be a lie or is incorrect or inaccurate. If there is any doubt that the Genesis story is all true, then the whole edifice crumbles in itself. This is, of course, fallacious thinking. Nevertheless, this is what shapes their worldview, including science, in that if they can point out to a single error or inaccuracy (even when an error can be the result of their own confusion which stems from their own scientific illiteracy) they think the whole edifice will also crumble into itself, as if science was this monolithic body that can be knocked down by a single well-placed hit, instead of a collection of knowledge on nature and the universe based on observation, experience, experimentation and induction.

    • @evibremer8891
      @evibremer8891 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes science
      is also a collection of errors, not only of knowledge.
      On Genesis I remember John Lennox’ talk about metaphors, it could help to adjust the question of every single word being true in the understanding of Christians who believe God himself said every single word of the scripture. They do have a more sophisticated view on the subject as one might assume at first sight.

The show was all about him interviewing the most amazing characters, from flamenco stars to real everyday people like "el risitas". I used to cry a lot when I watched the show. Either because of Mr Quintero's monologues/reflections or due to incontrollable laughter from the jokes and situations by his rather unusual guests.

    Thank you Dave for this yeoman service. One of the saddest aspects of the intellectual dishonesty disseminated by the “Discovery Institute” is their successful infestation of some institutions that previously engaged in rigorous, serious and honest - if sometimes controversial - confrontation with important ideas and issues. A specific example of this is “Uncommon Knowledge” hosted by Peter Robinson of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Peter Robinson and “Uncommon Knowledge” earlier earned my respect, if not always my agreement, by engaging with intellectual heavyweights such as Thomas Sowell, Stephen Kotkin, Robert Service … and the late (and much missed) Christopher Hitchens. Most recently, however, the rank pseudoscience of the likes of the Discovery Institute’s Stephen Meyer and Michael Behe are being hosted on Uncommon Knowledge … without even the slightest critical pushback. What an insult to the honest and genuine thinkers who appeared and presented their cases in earlier times!

    Honestly, this is the part that James Tour should be most embarrassed about. Some of this stuff is so easy to debunk that a high-schooler could probably do it because it’s literally right there in plain English. This is messy ribose? No, the caption clearly states that it’s ribose-borate, so why would it have an identical signal to ribose? Why is he washing away the magnesium that could possibly affect the RNA synthesis? Well, the glass contains magnesium, and no one expects that you could wash away magnesium within the glass; also, the paper explicitly states that it’s about seeing how the presence of magnesium affects RNA synthesis in plain English. Like, this is stuff that James should know, especially given that he is a synthetic organic chemist (surely he should know ribose and ribose-borate aren’t the same thing, that the glass used contains magnesium, and that the paper cited is all about RNA synthesis in the presence of magnesium), but he just doesn’t.
    There are so many other issues that a relative layperson like myself could see. Why is he talking about DNA and transcription when we’re looking at the RNA world hypothesis which-as the name suggests-had no DNA or transcription? The whole point of science is to test one thing at a time, so why should the entire thing be done prebioticly in one experiment? Why are we talking about what would destroy or debilitate life when life doesn’t exist yet? Why cite the earliest paper about the synthesis of something and nothing else to say that there is no way to synthesize something prebioticly, particularly when you would expect the earliest synthesis to not be prebioticly relevant?
    Even if he’s just pretending to be ignorant, this kinda stuff would make people less likely to believe him even on stuff he does know about. Unless you are ideologically motivated or lazy, this is really easy stuff to notice as problematic for him.
    Like, there are actual gaps in our understanding of origin of life, but James is particularly bad at pointing the real ones out, instead focusing on stuff that aren’t actually problems, either because they aren’t relevant or because they have already been solved. I think he pointed out only one thing that is actually an unknown in this field, which is just sad for someone pretending to be an expert debunking an entire field.

    Y'know, the most hilarious thing to me is that even from a Christian perspective his logic doesn't even make sense, the Bible doesn't contradict the idea of abiogenesis because stories like Genesis were never meant to be taken literally.
    I asked a Catholic friend of mine how he felt on this matter, and here's the gist of what he had to say; "The theological consensus on this has been pretty clear since the medieval age, when scripture and the universe conflict, the universe takes priority because the universe is a primary source on God while the Bible is merely inspired by God. If scriptures and the universe conflict, we must have misinterpreted something, human interpretation is not infallible after all, and God wouldn't make a holy book that directly contradicts his own creation.", I don't think there's anywhere honestly that James Tour has a leg to stand on, his arguments fall apart from both a scientific and philosophical standpoint.

    • @kerbehklobbah5790
      @kerbehklobbah5790 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm convinced at this point that getting slapped on a theological basis would be the only way to get James Tour to stop his infantile tirade of science denial, his religious beliefs clearly inform his thoughts more than his observations do, which is why the only way he'd listen if it's a Christian argument.

The amount of time and effort you and others have to invest in trying to correct the record is insane, though, especially given that y'all already know none of the nitwits who pay him to lie to them care at all to hear the actual facts he distorts. There is a certain kind of heroism in this: to be willing to fight the good fight against impossible odds, even knowing that you will likely not be able to get through to these people.
